  • Today's WebEx session that talked about some of the new version features discussed something that sounds a LOT like what you're talking about, for Managing Entities. The presenter showed the ability to swap back and forth between the traditional view and the new Manage Entities view. Plus, she showed some pretty flexible…
  • Rather than avoiding the Auto-Dependencies, I suggest enabling them and then reviewing them to see what results are generated. I use them across a hundred hospitals and clinics to great effect, and after reviewing them to verify they all make sense, I only found three that weren't perfectly rational. In each case…
  • Have you installed the Windows Management Agent and enabled SNMP-v3 on the servers? If so, then NPM should be able to poll them and display a great deal about them as soon as you give the SNMP strings to NPM and add the servers as nodes into NPM.
  • Hello, Zabeel. You can manually run command scripts against any of your devices by selecting the device (or hold down the Ctrl key if selecting more than one), then right-clicking on the device and choosing Execute Command Script. In the new windows that open, key in your script in the lower window, double-check it for…
  • Sean, I had some similar troubles when I first started using NCM. I found a variety of issues and fixes. * First off, reboot the NCM server to clear anything that's hung, then try again. * If you have session tracking enabled, there are two files that should be created or updated, and they're supposed to have the info you…
  • Have you searched Reports for "Inventory"? There are a number excellent pre-built Reports to choose from, and some may provide exactly the information you seek. If you don't find what you need pre-built, simply build a new Report that includes the "show inventory" command, or copy/edit an existing report to include that…
  • This is an interesting complex project, of which I was unaware. When I read that it relies on automatic updates to DNS during a failover, and that polling relies on DNS instead of plain IP addresses, I began understanding the design. I'm impressed, but haven't tried it--my environment hasn't place that degree of importance…
  • The process of making bulk configuration changes to switches via NCM includes the exact commands you'd enter from the command line. The process is: 1. (From the actual NCM server's desktop, as opposed to doing this via NCM's web interface) Select the switches to be changed in NCM by clicking on them with the Ctrl Key held…
  • I recommend you speak with your Information Security Team. It's likely they have already discovered your devices' open ports using something like Nexpose / Rapid7 / Nexus etc. If they do NOT have this information for you, please reach out to them for an approved solution for discovering your network. There's no need to…
  • Definitely there are several Thwack entries that display nice NOC views, and show how to create them. I've read Thwack stories that describe NOCs and Help Desk areas using large screens to display NPM information, maps that change colors in real time to reflect status, etc.
  • It's disappointing if this documentation, which appears to show NPM displaying useful UCS discoveries, is in accurate: Orion NPM 10.1 Meet the Features – Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) Support
  • Have you checked out this process? monitoring ucs If you don't find a satisfactory solution, I think it's time to call Solarwinds Technical Support and request assistance.
  • Wow. I expected / assumed that you'd get full information from UCS into NPM by creating the SNMP community read-only string on the UCS chassis and then discovering it with NPM. Then I expect more information would be available from the servers on the blade by configuring them for WMI and discovering them via WMI with NPM.…
  • I've seen something similar after adding a dozen Cisco WLC 5508's to NCM, and pointing their syslog and traps at the NPM pollers. WLC's send far more information than we anticipated; we had to severely restrict the amount of information those wireless controllers sent to NPM, otherwise we would quickly run out of space.…
  • Yes, it's possible. But you wouldn't ordinarily want to do it if both devices are going to be on the network at once--you'd get an IP address conflict. Here's how you can do it with a manual twist that lets you tweak it so you don't have conflicts: Display the startup-config from one device in NCM--let's say it's a Cisco…
  • Your question made me think of a few ideas; perhaps not what you're looking for immediately, but some may be of use for you as you expand or clean up or grow your monitoring solutions: * If you have a thousand servers, I'd think you have a server management solution already in place. That would be the tool to use to deploy…
  • We've been relying on Cisco Prime for years; it does a robust job of configuring and monitoring AP's, as well as a very thorough job of heat mapping them. It's been our goto tool for AP's only, despite its ability to also manage switches & routers. I appreciate NPM's ability to learn about AP's and create heat maps, but it…
  • Some experiences I've had with APC UPS backups solutions: * Ensure your UPS has a Network card in it. Several models will likely be available, from plain basics, to ones with environmental monitoring included. * Read the instructions for configuring it. If you don't have them on CD or paper, you can access them for free on…
  • Good advice (above). But don't forget to enable the "secret sauce" option that lets you get LOADS more information from you ASA's: Go into any ASA in NPM, then edit that node. Just past half-way down the page, look for "Cisco ASA" and put a check in the Advanced Cisco ASA Monitoring box. Then add the credentials for…
  • You might be trying to do too much to simply get a set of ports to be shut down via NCM's "Excecute Command Script" feature . NCM works just like you are operating at the console of a Cisco device. Build your script to shut down a port the same way you'd do it in person: conf t int fa0/1 shut end copy run start exit…
  • Anything you can run from a normal CLI console / SSH session to a switch or router or firewall can be run in a remediation script. Figure out exactly what you'd do manually to achieve the remediation, then save those commands and past them into the remediation script window and have NCM perform the remediation…
  • I'm still looking for this. Does anyone know how to remove the Help Link, as well as the Search magnifying glass?
  • Please share with us what Solarwinds tool you are using, and an example of an asset from which you want the amount of RAM displayed in the output of the tool. Perhaps then we'll have an answer that will fill your needs.
  • It's nice to see this information--thank you for the thread.
  • I'm still lovin' your work aggregating these resources under one page. Thank you for keeping an eye on what's useful and new and different and stimulating, and for making it available here!
  • I just happened across this again. And again, I'm blown away by the amazing things Thwack & Solarwinds staff have put together for others to access, use, and improve their businesses. For free. I'm speechless from here out. (And those who occasionally endure my written verbosity will attest that I must TRULY be amazed!)
  • Might someone have changed the access control list rules allowing your pollers to discover these switches? Could one or more firewall rules have changed that would deny your pollers from accessing the switches via snmp? Did one or more snmp strings change, either on the switches or on the poller(s)? They have to stay in…
  • I've not tried sending NPM to other apps. Other Thwack members may be able to help, but if this feature is available, I'm sure you'll find it relatively quickly by searching the Thwack archives and the Operations manual for NPM.
  • Do you have access to NCM? If so, you could create a script that can be applied to all the nodes it manages. Similarly, you can use NCM's Compliance feature to show every device that references the incorrect trap destination, and then automatically change that address via a scripted remediation.
  • If I might be so bold as to offer Installer Error Reports suggestions: * It's unnecessary to indicate "we detected a problem." * The largest text on the page should be applied to the actual problem. * The robot overwhelms the page, indicating a problem, but no solution. In fact, no one here knows how to help a dazed robot,…
