This afternoon I had a successful upgrade from NPM 12.0.1 to 12.2. Thanks to serena and her peers, I think we all learned some useful things about users like me, and ASA 5525-X's, and the upgrade process. Time will tell how much new learning curve I have in front of me, but this upgrade certainly shows tremendous progress…

Go with cobrien's answer--it's the best one you'll find. NTA doesn't measure what's not used, only what's used. And even that measurement must be well understood to be useful. NTA won't always give you the aggregate bandwidth used in both directions--usually it's only telling you inbound or outbound traffic on a port. To…

Google is your friend; simply query it with a question like "how to clear the interface counters on an HP ProCurve (or Cisco or other) switch or router?" Without you providing the brand and type and model of device, it's challenging to answer your question correctly the first time; you might be asking how to clear the…

You'll end up going to File/Settings, Configs, then to Comparison Critieria. Add a pattern that matches the spurious spaces. You might need to add several patterns, if you see configs that have differing amounts of spaces. There are good resources at Thwack that show how to build a pattern for ignoring config sections that…

I was speaking with a SW SE this week about similar topics, and I was lamenting the lack of the ability to discover credentials used by NCM after version 7.3. He said he's heard that complaint a lot, but that SW government customers required it to be removed due to security concerns, so I won't be surprised if the GUI,…

Those are fun graphics! Congratulations on achieving another milestone! As I peruse Thwack, I always stop when I see a comment from Radioteacher and read it. While I may skip over others' comments, when Radioteacher speaks, I listen!

It sounds like User Device Tracker is all you need, since you're not asking for network topology. If you have the snmp read-only strings for all devices, you'll get every device that gets scanned (assuming it has no ACLs or firewalls limiting access to who can talk to it, or to whom it can talk to). And the information…

Orion can report/alert when individual switch stack members’ CPU or Memory utilization goes high. The scripts below can be inserted into Reports or Widgets to show that information. This information is provided through the efforts and contributions of others like beastroy and magicjuanhunglo: For Memory the SQL is: JOIN…

William, I manage configuration changes on several Contivity 2700's with the generic Device Command Template: <!-- edited with XML Spy v4.4 U (http://www.xmlspy.com) by () --> <!--SolarWinds Network Management Tools--> <!--Copyright 2005 SolarWinds.Net All rights reserved--> <Configuration-Management Device="Generic CLI…

Might there be a chance the groups are there, but that you're just not seeing them due to a Node List Grouping setting? You can test for this by going to File/Settings and then selecting the top left option called Node List. On the top right is a pull-down menu, by which you can select from about 20 various parameters for…

You can simply click "Edit" in each Top 10 view and change the Maximum Number of Nodes to Display from 10 to 20, or 50, etc.

I built that kind of report for all of my customers, then scheduled it to run automatically on the first of each month. It took me about 20 minutes to build using the instructions provided here: How to create custom SLA reports And the customer really like it. I have a couple of versions--one that shows SLA uptime during…

Sadness! No one has offered examples of how they physically label their network gear! Come on, Thwacksters! Let's help Luke out! Luke and I've worked together, so he knows what I know. But I'll share it for others, in hopes they'll open up and share descriptions or pictures of rack-mounted devices with external labels. *…

Depending on the node, reboots may be unimpactful and seem false. For example, I have 200+ APS UPS's on my network. When Nexpose / Rapid7 do their vulnerability testing, the NIC's in some of these UPS's reload, and they generate a "Node rebooted" alert. The NIC rebooted, but the UPS didn't.

It sounds like Solar Winds Netflow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) is the module for you. Not only does it show you the traffic between any two addresses, it shows you when it happened and what kinds of traffic were passed. I use it most for troubleshooting congestion across small WAN links. A site with a small number of only…

After applying the latest hotfixes/patches, I'm not noticing ANY Solarwinds NPM/NTA/IPAM/NCM problems.

We use Orion NPM and Kiwi Syslog, but Kiwi is installed on a different server. Our network devices are all set to report everything to Orion, but certain critical devices are also configured to report to Kiwi. I keep a terminal session open to the Kiwi server and can see real time issues and messages. The same info…

I have experienced similar issues, and here are some fixes that worked for me: 1. Our nightly Windows server backup solution was backing up my NCM server during its scheduled switch/router configuration backup jobs. As a result, the backups were failing. Rescheduling the backup of the Orion server to take place much later…

Here's how to use NCM to accomplish your task: Caveats: * These commands and suggestions are based on working with a Cisco-style platform. If you use something else, just use that system's commands. * Prior to changing configurations, backup all your devices. That way you have something to analyze or fall-back to, in case…

I've done it; you can, too.

If serena wasn't monitoring this thread before, perhaps she can offer insight? She may not be a true wizard or angel, but the outcomes of her work with my Solarwinds deployment suggest that at least she KNOWS some of them, and can bring their attention to this issue.

I don't know if this is still an issue for you all these years later . . . If so, see if this document I created helps: How to trim, remove, or truncate domain names discovered and displayed in NPM 11.5.2 and NCM 7.4 Swift Packets! Rick Schroeder

Understanding what physical resources UDT requires is an interesting conundrum. I see what appears to me to be conflicting information about how many UDT devices can be monitored by a single UDT poller. https://support.solarwinds.com/@api/deki/files/9924/ScalabilityEngineGuidelines.pdf The first document linked shows the…

I thought the problem was caused by too few UDT polling engines for the number of UDT monitored devices/ports. Although the hotfix and the cleanup procedures provided above are excellent, and seem to help, I don't believe they are sufficient for prevention--only for temporary recovery from the problem. I've found…
-
I've used various tools to accomplish this--but most likely only because I don't have UDT. If you've got it, you're ahead of me. Here's my tedious process for discovering the devices on a switch's ports, without UDT: 1. Use Ping Sweep ping all ranges of addresses on all VLAN's on the switch in question. 2. Use Switch Port…

You can populate the Asset ID field with anything you want--it should not be overwritten automatically. We create an internal Asset ID number for everything in our inventory, and that number goes in this field. It's possible the number of serial numbers you want to track will exceed the length restrictions of this field.…

If it's booty ye desire, then a carouser be ye not, lest ye slip and fall into the briny deep! But if it's doubloons ye seek, then the briny deep of Davy Jones' locker is an easy target--where else do all the treasure be? Not in the holds of brigantine vessels protected by an armada o' the King's best galleons, nor in the…
