I'd no idea that book/movie was a resource. Of course, being fiction, it's not as relevant as using real-world failures as examples. But it's probably a LOT easier to analyze a book/movie than a disaster in which many political/military types may have been trying to use CYA processes to cover up or hide their bad decisions.

My "solution" for those users, all those years ago, was to explain as best I could (on a newbie level, with patience and understanding and kindness) about the risks. Then explain the problem to our internal InfoSec Team, get their blessing, and enforce the block on any long URL's. Users had to access those from their own…

I heartily support the idea that training is required, and that it should be recurring regularly to refresh users' ability to recognize existing schemes, and to introduce them to new ones.

Oh, there are so MANY benefits! THWACK MVP Program - Updated February 2018 Access to strange humorous threads: If you responded to this Discussion, you might be a SolarWinds MVP. If you pass your spare time opening every SWQL query in SDK to consider how you might use the information to improve your NPM displays, you might…

Companies must be required to be "future compliant" and "future aware" so we aren't trapped with legacy systems, no longer supported by vendors who wrote/built them, and that are too expensive to replace. Government agencies must be better educated about standards and requirements in the IT industry so hospitals aren't…

My eyes are open for a company looking for a person experienced with SolarWinds. I like working where I am, but I'm open to all sorts of wonderful opportunities.

Awkward pauses are . . . . . . awkward. I agree with a lot of the findings in this story. But I have a good friend whose mind works differently than mine, and although we live in different countries, and converse via Skype or cell phone, his long and awkward pauses are part of who he is. I've grown comfortable with them…

When we started using the cloud I set up NetPath to watch the target/destinations shared with me. They include: * powerpoint.officeapps.live.com * view.officeapps.live.com * visio.officeapps.live.com * word-edit.officeapps.live.com * word-view.officeapps.live.com * officeapps.live.com * broadcast.officeapps.live.com *…

In my experience, Management is initially happy if they can save significant money for licenses locally versus sending O365 or Outlook / Exchange to the cloud. However, in my organization, we're seeing so many complaints, and have only migrated about 5,000 staff members (out of 17,000 planned to move to O365), that…

Points can take a week to two weeks to be applied, depending on the situation and event/mission. I appreciate when they are applied immediately. Here's hoping yours come soon.

Kevin is with Thwack, and he'd never take his eyes off the road to speak directly to a camera while wearing sunglasses in his convertible. He's too good a driver to risk being distracted and missing that (deer, motorcycle, dog, child, lava flow) crossing the road without notice.

Then we share much in common.

OK. I'm impressed.

Some of the episodes, particularly the very early ones in the 1960's, were too hokey to enjoy (for me, as one who enjoys Science Fiction). Later episodes improved the plot and special effects, but I find I still have to be in the right frame of mind to release my restrictions on reality and practicality, and to buy into…

Too often our superiors may not accept our analysis of an issue, and not accept our recommendations for its resolution. I've worked Networking at two local businesses in the last 20 years. Both of them observed a "Rule of 150 Miles": If the advice came from someone internal, or from someone within 150 miles of our primary…

At least we can prove the problem's not our ISP or the intermediary hops--that it's at Microsoft. Thank goodness for NetPath!

Thank you for sharing this. It seems well thought out.

This information makes me happy. Thanks for sharing it! Despite official organizations officially recognizing the term, "Hacker" remains a negative connotation to the non-I.T. public, I suspect, and moving away from it towards something more politically correct can't be a bad idea.

aLTeReGo, I was hoping that would be the case. However, I'm unable to see/select the nodes' interfaces and choose only active interfaces' in/out stats. It's as if there's a level or layer I'm missing, unable to drill into it and select it for this. What is that basic thing I'm assuming / missing?

The "What if?" article exemplifies some of the way highway engineers and INFO Highway Engineers plan for disasters and contingencies. It's done at every level that can be funded, to ensure Five 9's or better uptime and availability. Twenty years ago we put two NIC's in a server and connected them to two access switches…

All right, I'll bite on the obvious bait and respectfully offer a nit-picking event: It sounds as if you're saying "firewall logs are a known and very useful way to prevent attacks." It's not exactly what you wrote. But it's an impression I received from reading what you wrote. Of course, having firewall logs and analyzing…

Bring Amanda back--she's got great experiences that demonstrate skills we all need.

It certainly beats sharing a spreadsheet out among multiple users, as in back in the bad old days.

Having waited until I had an opportunity to read today's comments, I tried reading between the lines to imagine the intent of the question, and luckily answered it correctly. But I reserve the friendly and gentle right to disagree with those answers. ;^)

I accidentally discovered that when FB forced members to install the Messenger app on smart phones, they left a small back door exception that allows a person to still use a smart phone to send FB messages WITHOUT having to install the Messenger: The trick is that the phone must be out of memory, and I accomplish that by…

Perhaps in the future we'll WANT to be able to monitor these additional virtual interfaces/elements--as new security requirements and implements occur (especially with ISE / NAC deployment).

I've caught some great fish on New Years ice fishing trips to Lake Of The Woods.

Clearly, relying on market pressure and consumers avoiding problem products is not working here. Consumers are ignorant of the risks, apparently unwilling to educate themselves about the issues, and relying on the good-will of the manufacturers to secure systems while keeping them extremely affordable (a.k.a.: "cheap").…

That's right. No network failures during payroll periods, either. Or during C-Level video conferences. Or during "security events" that rely on real-time calls for help with electronic/wireless devices and/or IP Cameras. Or in an Operating Room or an Emergency Room (although you might have included those when you mentioned…
