Moving the files and e-mail for 17,000 employees from internal DC's to the cloud proved to be a less-than comfortable experience. Due in great part to proofs of concept demonstrated with small numbers and sizes of files, but failing when scaling to an Enterprise sized solution. Running out of NAT/PAT pools on firewalls…

One day, maybe Application Performance Management will be totally automated, comprehensive, based in standards, and secure. Oh, and intuitive. And easy. And it'll automatically update as apps are applied, patched, discarded, morphed, replaced. And it'll become less and less expensive. . . . sigh . . .

That was an excellent closing remark, and we applaud and admire your professional demeanor. Be well, do good work, and innovate to create more best practices & solutions! No matter your impostor syndrome, no matter your regrets and possible recriminations, even no matter your achievements and successes, know this first (if…

Let's design driverless vehicles (and trollies) to avoid that Kobayashi Maru no-win scenario from Star Trek. * How about having them stop instead of plowing into people? * Can they be designed to look far enough ahead to provide other options? * How about providing them with a redundant set of brakes that are controlled by…

I discovered the hard way that EOC isn't a good fit for my environment, and that we can scale our pollers pretty well across 300 miles while having them report to just one instance of NPM--which is ideal, in my opinion. Where scaling isn't ideal is when a single chassis switch can consume 1300 elements by itself. I'd much…

Buying a Ford from a vending machine isn't that new, nor is it solely a stunt or a limited-time-offer (except at this one location). I find it impractical, but there's a sucker born every minute, and the prestige that comes from having so much money that you can impress your peers with the ability to buy a car from a…

I relied heavily on traceroute's immediacy. Building a new NetPath through the Internet takes more time, but delivers on BGP info and resilience and diverse paths in ways traceroute couldn't discover. Plus, NetPath's ability to record graphic paths and node and link latency and packet loss over time make it the long term…

Your sling ring is more powerful than mine--I envisioned my parallel to the sling ring as something like SSH. It opens a portal into other worlds (routers, chassis switches, giant UCS environments, ACI, tiny access points, etc.).

El Chapo was vulnerable the same way we all are. If you can't trust your employees, what have you got? The competition is inside your network. I really enjoyed this story--it reads like the intro to a Tom Clancy novel. Thanks for sharing it!

I'm not sure I'd title this with "True Citizen Engagement". It seems more like an article highlighting the importance of complete I.T. engagement for monitoring on the back side, with the goal of guaranteeing a better SLA (and performance experience) for the customer.

Although NOT using proper security can cause a business to fail, the cost of implementing the right security properly is still daunting. Capturing and analyzing all data flows (North-South, East-West) in our organization required serious investment in Gigamon and Cisco ISE and AMP and Splunk, and thousands of hours of…

It would certainly be nice if past acceptable behavior by a web site remained as expected. I gave up fighting that battle and resigned myself to having no influence or control over cases where I like the html equivalent of TARGET=TOP on links. Now I expect it to not work as desired, so I just right click. Your solution is…

Hmmm. I had EOC for a few years, I don't recall having problems running NCM jobs across multiple pollers. Maybe I'm mis-remembering? Or maybe the current version of EOC operates differently than the one available ten years ago. That might be it. For fun, can you share some screen shots of what you're trying to accomplish…

One would think a good work flow for approval would automatically notify the next person in line for approval when their turn is due to review and approve or deny. And it would also notify the person who submitted the request. That info should automatically include who has approved the item, and the date/time on which it…

Some of those are reasonable requests, and we require auditors to do without that information, forcing them to attempt to discover our actual vulnerabilities. We regularly contract white hats to do this externally through the firewalls, and internally on ports that are (supposedly) unprotected by ISE or other ACLs.

Those are some good ideas about Robin versus Genie--I like your analysis. If we accept every hero or sidekick must, by definition, have an Achilles Heel, Genie's was his lamp. Genie could easily deal with Voldemort by sending him into a Cave Of Wonders on the far side of the universe, or inside a star, after having removed…

Don't let your love of antique Star Wars poorly operated masks cloud the future. The Diva shows serious singing capabilities, and her backup music is highly advanced. Maybe I won't listen to it as I fall asleep, but I respect it infinitely more than Figrin D'an. Go Figrin that!

Skeptical Cat remains skeptical of Cloud Storage, or any non-in-house storage solutions, for a few reasons: * Security. Will the Cloud Storage provider allow me to monitor all aspects of their security and form my own opinion of their solution, instead of telling me to trust they'll keep my data private and intact and…

That exact thing has happened recently with the large . . . hmm . . . how do I write it without being filtered by the P.C. software of Thwack? Maybe I'll just put in a link to a recent example of folks wanting to white wash an event in an effort to cover it up to reduce negative economic impact, and let you form your own…

Airlines seem to be caught between that rock and a hard place situation, with loss of comfort for BOTH the person in front AND the person behind, when the front person reclines. I've been in that same boat (well, in that same PLANE) many times, worried I'm causing discomfort for the person behind me as I try to stretch…

I agree on prioritizing education over socialization and inebriation in every nation. But if someone can figure out how to do all three (in their appropriate times & spaces) safely in a COVID-19 world, they might just be the financial hero of the age.

Regarding custom socks, I'll see your Duchess of SassyTown Women's crew socks, and raise you a full set of men's Lucas Films socks.

Kudos to you for noting the importance of training and staffing levels. I'd emphasize them even more, and place them higher in the list of items to consider before deploying or changing any "V" worlds.

Face it: Life is easier, better, and more efficient if you use Solarwinds products and tie them all into each other. Break down the silo walls, get everyone trained and familiar with Orion. I'm lobbying to have a Systems Monitoring position created in my organization--I'm first in line.

I've followed Artificial Intelligence in fiction and in the real world for a long time. There seems to be a huge disconnect between what folks want or assume, and what is actually available--or predicted to become available in the next one to five years. I like the good speculation, the positive thoughts about helpful A.I.…
