it's single pane, who did what & how did it hurt. I've only licenced SCM for our Orion servers, so far, but it's soooo goood.

Checkpoint firewalls always seem to fall between the cracks, but they're everywhere.

Thanks Kevin, bumped.

many thanks sum_giais I' give it a go

Hi Ashley, The info's all there in the Log Analyser and nicely slice-able. It's just the menus that don't quite do what I expected. If the syslog & trraps drop down options were replaced by a single logs option and then that link to the full LA page it think it would be more intuitive. Many thanks, Robert
-
Hi, We bought the LA module as it was a great improvement of previous viewing methods, I really think that it's just a bit of menu confusion.
-
Hi, long time no see yes thanks, perhaps it's just the menus that need tidying up. If, for example, the syslog menu item took you to a filtered LA page that also showed the other options it might be clearer

database backups, recoveries etc are all logged as changes. I guess what we're looking for is an NCM style of exclusions so that these changes do not trigger configuration change alerts.

Thanks @"m_roberts". Really useful list

I run a report monthly which is a SQL query & then I keep it. select ServerName, IP, KeepAlive, Elements, Nodes, Interfaces, pollers, pollingcompletion from Engines I also run an XLS, I'll clean it up & upload it soon.

The Fail Over Engine is the replacement product for the Hot Standby Engine and the Hot Standby Engine will NOT be suppprted in the next release of NPM. If one polling engine can support your entire load you could run it on a single engine or optionally spread the load across multiple servers, but if one server will not…

What a superb article. Thank you. I was told by SW that if your engines run on VMs the count should be reduced from 8000 to 7000. I record all of these statistics once a month so that I can easily show my boss (& his boss) that we need another polling engine. A snapshot figure is great, but being able to show the trend is…

I had millions of expired IPs too. Now set to All IPs, 60 mins and I'm down to 4000 now. Thanks guys.

I run a daily report of volumes that are unresponsive. If there's one or two it might be that volume labels were changed & Orion not updated. But a great byproduct of this is if ALL the volumes of a server are unresponsive it either means that the SNMP service has died or, even worse, the server has hung and no services…

I initially had quite a bit of confusion with which alert produced that email as there were a few of us creating alerts. Eventually we all agreed to add an (Alert=${AlertName}) as the last line of every message text. Now when someone notices a bad alert, we immediately know which alert to fix.

Hi, Did your cluster monitoring get sorted out? Was it a cluster issue or an APM issue? Thanks Robert

Overnight we also lost the ability to see maps. The home map frame displayed the error "Unexpected error: An error occurred while generating map 843391e8-701f-468c-bb03-c94b533fd565.OrionMap" This only affected an additional web server while the primary poller continued to display maps and other information OK.…

Hi, I wonder if we're all getting a bit too determined for Orion to be the solution to all problems. We anguished for ages over how to deliver mail to a variety of staff split geographically, across different companies and by dicipline. Tough call. We ended up sending all alert mails from Orion to a single mailbox on our…

I suspect that the error message is telling the truth and that the registry has a problem. You could raise a ticket on the Customer Portal for help, but I suspect they may ask you to re-build your AWS. You could try doing a Configuration Wizard on this AWS. which will run through all the files, reg entries and permissions…

It sounds like you need either 3 or 4 servers For the FailOverEngine solution PollingEngine1Active PollingEngine1Passive PollingEngine2Active PollingEngine2Passive or for the Hot Standby Solution PollingEngine1 PollingEngine2 HotStandbyEngine The Hot Standby solution will only support one (out of many) failed engines for…

I did wonder if they were in there, but I could not find the docs by name. the template guide is really neat. thanks.

If you roll down to the bottom of the Node's Summary view you should see a widget with an APPLICATIONS pie chart, and under that, there's a widget that contains a line that says AppInsight for IIS. Click on this and it will take you to a new page with all of your IIS metrics. The AppInsights are amazing. There is so much…

When you Customise Page on Node Details, it's changing the "view". That same "view" is used every time that you call the Node Details - for ANY box. You need to use some variable in the call to your picture library so that the "view" choses the correct picture when it is looking at different devices. If you change…

Hi, That's a big question - & could be such an open answer! Long term, I'd like to see templates of users that can be rubber stamped onto new users, Updating templates & pushing those changes down to the grouped users. Users having a template default set of maps/menus/views/etc, but (for those permitted to) to be able to…

Nice one. I'm setting it up now. Thanks

and, depending on your NPM version, browse to the admin tab & take a look under the Details section for Module Details to find the version numbers. On the older NPMs you may have to take a look at the Customise settings of each module.

It can be a fairly lengthy process if you're starting from nothing. If you've installed Orion & either DISCOVERED all of your devices and interfaces or have added them manually, you are already collecting the data that you need. The trick is to understand what it all means and where and how it all relates. You will need to…

It's a two pronged process. Log on to your Orion server & run the Report Writer where you can build tables of just about anything. You create a new report (or, better still, copy and edit an existing one) and then view it through the Reports tab of the web server. Once you've got this far, you can then "Customize Page" on…

Nodes are assigned to an engine by each engine's EngineID & these IDs are stored in SQL The new installation will continue to use these ID numbers to match node and engine. In a brand new & unmolested installation, the Primary Polling Engine would be EngineID=1 and subsequent Additional Polling Engines would increment, but…
