Travel is going to be tough for me. Walk to end of road, get bus number 90, get off after two miles and walk 100m to venue. I had better start training.

Computer Science curriculums. Maybe they should focus on teaching something useful. In the past few years I've had to deal with so many graduates who can barely turn on a computer and who have absolutely no idea of how to diagnose a problem. They still believe they can teach me how to do things correctly though. I soon…

AI used for cancer screening. Interesting article showing how it could be hacked (done by the good guys to prove a point). Israeli research shows medical scans vulnerable to hacking

We should be Ok with the WhatsApp flaw. Personal phones can't connect to the corporate network and corporate phones can only run a prescribed set of apps. WhatsApp isn't one of them.

I don't want to grow up. If only some people would admit they don't know something instead of saying they do then completely messing things up and leaving me to pick up the pieces. I am all too aware of my limitations but I am also aware that I can learn new stuff and I don't let my limitations hold me back. I do let them…

@"captain_hook" What do you think I did. @"Jfrazier" Cheers for that. Still finding my way around the new site.

I've always shredded old drives. Maybe it's my paranoia. I did work at one site where, when we replaced a drive the client took it away, shredded it, exposed it to high strength radiation and then encased the remains in concrete. To be fair, the data was extremely sensitive.

Certain individuals hoarding information to "protect" their jobs. No teamwork and people in roles they are entirely unsuited and unqualified to be in. Oh what fun.
-
Really generous of Yahoo. Pity they didn't spend some of that up front to actually secure the data in the first place.
-
That's a well known philosophy in IT support. It is known as "The Scotty Principle". Set the expectations then exceed them.

I watched the footage and the 'driver' wasn't watching the road. Maybe if it wasn't a self driving vehicle the driver still wouldn't have been watching the road but I would expect they would have been watching a bit more and might have been able to react. It looks like the car didn't even try to brake or swerve. I guess…

Thanks for this one. We run a competitor's IPAM and it is good to see why it isn't as good and gives me more ammo to take to management.

As I commute daily on the London Underground I can save them the trouble. Everyone is stuck somewhere underground going nowhere slowly in conditions you aren't allowed to transport cattle in. I love the smell of sweaty armpits in the morning (not) (To badly paraphrase the famous quote).

I started with a well known outsourcing company at large London local authority as a contractor and was tasked with performing a due diligence exercise on the 30 Netware servers we were to take over. I found 129 Netware servers. I also found a Windows server which was up and running and managing the Local Authority…

MIT - Nooooo. It's the bit about "Then take action" that I don't like. If I had one it would likely have to 'take action' by killing people (users, mobile phone watching zombies walking down the street etc.)

Tinfoil HAT. Oops. I was using Tinfoil UNDERPANTS.

Today 7th does seem like either something is wrong or I'm missing the obvious. As I don't know the product but was very interested in getting it I was hoping for something more user friendly (if I'm missing something). As far as I can see the correct answer is "None of the above".
-
If it requires an understanding of the product and we don't have the product how are we supposed to answer. Seems a bit restrictive.

It's not the one word (with 4 letters) they were looking for.

Politicians (and management). Unable to understand something so turn to advisers who won't admit to not understanding anything and just end up doing what they think will get them most votes instead of doing their jobs and doing the right thing for the people.

Excellent article. I'm going to show this one to manglement as they don't seem to understand that it isn't the great panacea they think it is.

The last time I saved someone's life was in Spain. A friend passed out in a paella and I stopped him from drowning. Good times.

Training users. Reminds me of the old saying. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

Been using Appinsight for AD for a while now (must have been on a beta through a managed service provider) and it was very useful. I had started using Appinsight for SQL and it helped me t find out why several sql databases were performing badly. However, I have changed jobs and am now fighting with Nagios XI. Doing my…

Yes. Small companies can't compete with Microsoft etc. so find a niche. They grow the niche into something a bit more mainstream then Microsoft etc. muscle in leaving the smaller players with problems. They will merge and merge again and again until Microsoft etc. just buys them.

Oops. Q5 needs fixed. Can't answer it correctly.

Alexa. No thanks. Why would I want another woman in the house ignoring me.

I've worked on a number of migrations some of which I started, some I joined in the middle (because it was running into trouble) and some I joined at the end (because it was already in trouble). All were eyeopening but the most frustrating were the ones where the client decided that, near the end, they would get someone…
