You do know it's not real ?

All good stuff. I'm a big advocate of talking to the money makers. Find out what they need to help them make more money and then offer solutions. Talk their language and work with them. Everyone wins. If you can get them to buy the beer too, it's even better.

Maybe by then we'll have invented something else to keep data safe. Maybe AI will have taken over. Who knows.

@"undesired_result" Unfortunately that isn't true as not all missions start on the 1st. Hope your monitoring is more accurate. Also, this is the first monthly mission since the new platform became available. Some parts aren't up and running yet (not having a go at the great people at Solarwinds who do an amazing job) so it…

Lucky you. At my last job (a few months ago) I got rid of the last Windows 2000 server and some of the remaining Windows 2003 servers. Glad I'm not there any more. Got lots of 2008R2 servers here as well as 2012 and 2016. No 2019 yet.

Cryptocoin mining. I'm not really sure how this can happen. My anti-virus solution at home caught a bad webpage yesterday that was trying to install one. It was blocked. Surely businesses must have up to date A/V too. I also watch what the computers are doing and any suspicious disk and CPU activity gets checked.…

You mean you haven't got one. I thought all IT techies had one. I used to bamboozle idiot customers by using a toy Star Trek TNG Tricorder when diagnosing faults on Tricord superservers (worked best when I already had the error codes and knew what was faulty). I'd switch the toy on, let it make beeping noises, pretend to…

I've got most notifications turned off as I know they aren't actually important. That way, really important stuff doesn't get missed in the noise.

Of course developers don't use encryption. It's all about churning out code fast and taking the cash. It's nothing new. Y2K was exactly the same. No one coded properly then either (except me, my code written in 1988 for a major client was Y2K ready because I'm anally retentive like that).

I only discovered this mini mission today so missed out on the first week's prize. Today's question does need to be reviewed. I suspect it's another radio button instead of check boxes problem. Any chance we could get a notification of these mini missions sooner (say on day 1 or before). Thanks for everything you do though.

@"ecklerwr1" Nice one. We've only got 3000 worldwide but almost everyone is working from home via VPN with full access to everything and everyone has video conferencing from their laptop / mac. Even the IT team is working remotely. Video conferencing seems to be working very well with no glitches. I was on a call yesterday…

Just started a new job where I'm tasked with looking at the evolved systems and trying to sort out the mess. I'm being pulled in 20 different directions with no time to figure out the hows and whys of what was done in the past. All this whilst not having high level access as "I'm new". Might be interesting trying to pass…

Someone was killed by a self driving Uber car in Arizona recently. I guess that is software killing someone.

Unfortunately they think we are mind readers and can perform magic at the drop of a hat (a top hat with a rabbit in it ?).
-
I'm surprised they didn't go back in time and fix it yesterday then claim we were all mistaken. It's what I would have done
-
Moi aussi.

Yeah, my good deed for the week. Now I can go back to being a miserable sod.
-
What ? You're telling me data in the cloud might not be secure. I find that really hard to believe (not). I'm surprised it's only 20%.

Can't access the customer portal. Changed jobs 11 months ago and lost access (as I don't work there anymore). Have persuaded new employer to get Solarwinds but haven't actually bought it yet. Too many other projects have precedence. Hopefully specifying hardware today with a view to buying all the bits in the next few…

I'm afraid I have to disagree. The language in the question makes it ambiguous enough so that either answer could be correct. That makes it pot luck as to whether we get it right or not. That isn't a good way to learn about the product.

Unfortunately the date and time on your original incorrect posting have changed indicating that you HAVE edited your post. Adding the word "JUST" has completely changed the meaning. I actually said I thought you weren't being misleading. I didn't blame you for "my mistake". I stated I followed your advice and got the…

Until they are as good as KITT I won't be getting one.

It's not about Disaster Recovery any more. Business Continuity is much more important with the rise of Cyber Attacks. DR is just a small part of it.

The Hubble Telescope on it's last upgrade gained a 486 based CPU. OK it was a hardened version but still really old tech. I'm willing to bet the software was really old too and almost certainly controlled the gyroscopes. Interesting article about the gyroscopes. Gyroscopes | ESA/Hubble | ESA/Hubble

Maybe we should just ban the scooters. Technically in London they are illegal to use on the road and on the footpaths. You still see some but not like the plagues some places are seeing.

I stopped using IE for most things years ago. Unfortunately Microsoft ignored the IETF standards as did a lot of developers. There are quite a lot of websites that now only work on IE.

Data theft is rapidly becoming non news. It happens so often that big organisations really don't care any more. It's often cheaper to pay any fines that it would be to secure their systems.
-
Mmmmmnnnn Pigeon. Don't see it that often but it is very nice. Last time I had it was in France. Hungry now.

All the best engineering advice I stole from non-technical people Now that really was well worth reading. All very true too. I always encourage people to come up with ideas no matter how daft they think they are. Sometimes it is the thing that someone thinks is really stupid that actually helps us fix whatever the problem…

Yes. Not all of us are DBAs. I'm trying to learn about the product but this just seems to be designed to exclude non DBAs.
