Good article. We used to have multiple Solarwinds products monitoring our systems. Then management outsourced the network support so we lost NPM and the outsourcing company used their own product. Now we are replacing our server infrastructure with an HCI solution. This hardware can't be monitored by Solarwinds and only a…

Will a damp cloth do ?

Lyft. I wouldn't want to see that in my rear view mirror. It looks too much like a police car.
-
Arrrrgggghhhhh. Just had my day ruined. I had booked this afternoon as a training session but management have decided I need to sit in a useless meeting where nothing will be achieved (yet again). Somebody get me out of here.

Cars that talk to each other are OK IF all the cars are doing this. The problem is when some don't. What happens if one car says look out I'm here and the other one is deaf (no tech.) There is also the problem of dumbing down drivers. Eventually you will get to the situation where the driver can't manually get out of a…

Answered the poll and left a comment but systems says it is waiting for me to take the poll. I must be a Thwackaholic as I'm now sweating and shivering with the absense of points. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas it's a really bad time to be going through Cold Turkey Update - Now got green check mark and points.…

Too true. I once did a 71 hour stint on a DR. I did make the buggers get me pizza to keep me going.
-
I see what you mean. Will have to think about this before pulling the trigger. I might be overthinking it though.
-
Could have really used this at my last place. The ID Management solution had about 50 feeds for user data in and out. It was really complex and no one really understood how it worked as everyone who did know had left.

Yes. I've been pushing our SaaS SAM provider to get their system upgraded so I can monitor our 50,000+ Office365 accounts. Unfortunately they borked the system update and now I can't even add nodes.
-
Yes. I'm always having to explain to idiot management why I don't appear to be doing much. I also show them how much I achieve compared to others who always seem busy and overworked. There's no point in rushing around like a headless chicken when you can sit down, think about the problem then fix it.

On the other hand they usually double what you tell them anyway. I was once asked how many units of alcohol I drank per week. I told the truth and the doc nearly fell of her chair. I didn't think it was that much but she had assumed I was lying and doubled it. If I really did drink that much I'd probably fall off MY chair.

I think it took at least 6 hours to run for me. I just left it to finish.
-
Surely a "Big Blue" hole.
-
If you run a hybrid solution with on premises, cloud and SaaS where would you place your monitoring solution ? I'm just interested in other peoples thoughts and reasoning. I may create a poll for this.

We are trying to use Solarwinds WPM to monitor websites but it can't cope with some pop up authentication windows. I've had a support ticket open for months about this. Pity as it could be really useful.

Oh boy. You really don't know my mum. Forgetting her birthday will condemn you to hell for all eternity. Mentioning her age is much worse.

There are many places running on old equipment. Sometimes it cannot be replaced because there isn't a suitable replacement. Sometimes the replacement is too expensive, sometimes it is just too complicated to replace. I've worked in places where I have had to support really old stuff for all of these reasons. I've given up…

I've been banging on about this for years but management just don't want to listen. You need people to look forward to the next lesson, be talking about the last one and not realise that they are learning. You can make it fun and competitive without having to supply prizes but that helps too. Look at what Solarwinds have…

I'm British. 1984 is compulsory reading. Given it was released in 1949 it was surprisingly prescient.

IOT is mostly low end stuff where every penny counts for the manufacturer. Do you really think they would spend more than they needed to in order to make them secure. Of course not. I have none in my home. Two reasons. They are gimicks and I suspected they wouldn't be secure.

Tracking via mobile phone location data. Here in the UK we expect the government will do this but will then completely balls up the prosecution as they don't pay enough for the good lawyers to work on their side. Only the bad guys can afford the good lawyers.

Oh dear. Today (Wed) it may be a typo or a trick but one of the answers will cause some concern.

So Facebook is selling data to 3rd parties and they are then allowing free access to the data. Surely there must be something in the contract between Facebook and the 3rd parties to stop this. Maybe Facebook sues the 3rd parties then gives the money to the affected people.

Office Space. Live it every day here.

Worked fine for me (if that helps diagnose the issue).

Surely it's worse if you have done everything and find one cable left over.
-
Yes but proper English mustard, not that weak American stuff.
-
I wouldn't say TOTALLY crazy but you do work in IT and are involved in Systems Monitoring. That's enough to drive you crazy.

As far as I can see, most companies will refuse to take data security seriously until forced. Hopefully GDPR will help. I'm not holding my breath though.
