Earthquake early warning. 3 seconds. I suppose that gives you time to kiss your *** goodbye. Fortunately here in the UK our biggest earthquakes aren't enough to cause any damage. I can see why it might be useful for Cali residents. Can't read the LA Times article as the website is unavailable. There hasn't been a…

Yes it is. When I convert GBP to USD I don't get anywhere near any of the answers. Now I'm used to US companies ripping us off by just making the GBP price the same or similar to the USD price but I don't really want to take the chance of getting this wrong based on an assumption.

Must tell one of my current clients about this. Oh wait. I did but they don't listen.

Had a close shave with the Facebook stuff once. Was at a job interview when they brought up the problems with stuff I had posted on my facebook account. When I told them that I didn't have one they tried to prove me wrong. Turned out it was someone else with the same name but not even resident in the UK. It did make me…

Agreed. AI is just another tool. Years of experience will lead to intuition and management thinking you are a genius. I've lost count of how many times I've suggested where a problem lies only to be overruled and subsequently found to be correct.

I worked in Government / public sector for a number of years. Cloud First was great until you realised that almost every system couldn't be put into the cloud because of various pieces of legislation and regulation. Training never happened because every IT department was cut to the bone and there was no money available and…

Bike first cities might work in the Netherlands (a country not well known for it's hills) but I can't see it working in the UK. Also, most cyclists here seem to think they own the road and that the traffic laws don't apply to them. This gives all of them a bad name and they are mostly hated.

I once worked at a secure site where dead hard disks were treated correctly. We had to hammer a six inch nail through them. They were then taken away by a large person you wouldn't argue with (and he had a gun). They would come back after being put through an industrial shredder. We had to sign for them then he would take…

Here's what I see for the "Recovery Summary". No mention of Virtual to virtual.

Funny article (as in Ha Ha). ML is still in its infancy though so it is probably correct to compare it to a 2 year old. If things go well it will mature far faster than humans though (although most people don't think I have matured at all , unless you count it as in a cheese kind of way).

People are getting so used to IOT that they forget it is there and can sometimes come a cropper. I read a story recently about an office where a new member of staff had started. He had a fitness tracker connected to his laptop. He was on a toilet break when his laptop started loudly congratulating him on achieving a…

Hiring gap. Yes yes yes. I've been banging on about this for years. I don't interview people and ask them in depth technical questions. I ask them how would they approach dealing with a problem. The technical stuff they can learn or Google. The methodical thought process required to diagnose a problem is a skill that is…

It's OK putting the organisation first but that doesn't pay the mortgage or put food on the table. Yes we should do our best for the organisation that pays us but we still need to look out for ourselves and our families. Keeping an eye on the rear view mirror is a good thing but we should also be looking forward to where…

Never used it. Have always inherited a deployment and then had to 'fix' it.

Put VMWare NSX into my last place. Real pain to set up and probably a nightmare to maintain as we have all left. Looking to simplify loads of stuff at my new place.

The problem lies with commercial fishing with its associated costs. If the commercial fishing boats can't sell their illegally caught fish because the fish aren't covered by this then there is no profit and therefore no illegally caught fish. There must be tougher legislation to punish those caught both buying and selling…

Yes. It makes no difference what sector you work in. Once you go to the cloud you will need to really up your monitoring as you will need proof of where the problem lies. Otherwise the cloud provider and the ISP will never acknowledge that the problem lies with them. Think broadband. Here in the UK, when you have a problem…

Turns out I've been doing this for years. Buy some servers with no disks, some memory and CPU cores. Run VMWare from SD cards and stick a SAN / NAS in. If I need more compute I can add extra CPUs or extra servers. If I need more memory I can add it to existing hosts or add new servers. If I need more disks I can add more…

Yes but who cares about whether people live or die. Being able to tweet about absolute nonsense to people you don't know is so much more important

Thank you. Green tick achieved.

Radio button so just picked the one that gives me the most trouble.

Yep, experience most of these every day here. They really don't like it when I point it out to them

Drug companies have always made excessive profits from their products. If only there was some way of regulating them. Yes they do need to re-coop their costs and make a profit but they will be selling the drugs for many many years to an ever expanding market.

Microsoft hardware. Oh no. It sounds like the boys from Pied Piper have sold out (TV show - Silicone Valley).

Sorry. Government agreeing a strategy ? It would make sense to have a central strategy but as they have decentralised IT and placed it at Trust level it would be almost impossible to get them all to agree. Also sorry but when you used Irradiate did you mean eradicate. Both usages make the sentence make sense but have very…

Yes but the same can be said about lawyers. I'm sure there are some honest ones and I'm sure someone will find one one day. In the meantime we have lawyers taking bribes, turning up with pre-conceived ideas, ones out to further their own career and ones who are just incompetent. There would need to be significant oversight…

Must admit, that did make me chuckle. I can just imagine it here. Where's my server ? I deleted it because it had too many snapshots. Here's your P45 (means you've just been sacked).

Only 200 breweries. We have over 1700 in the UK.

Mmmmmmm. Meat Outlet.

Wish I was sitting outside one of those bars in the photo right now.
