Hopefully, if I win, it will be a UK version.

Not on my page 5 it isn't.

Hi, I did a UX with Ashley Orr last week on the new version of the portal as they wanted someone who hadn't any experience of the current one. She thought my input was useful (hopefully she wasn't just being nice). I did bring it up with her that I couldn't access the portal as I wasn't really a customer. They are looking…

Will only work when the vendors don't have their own interests at heart. Just look at how Microsoft ignore all the standards.

Don't know what has happened to facial recognition but I put in a system in Northern Ireland in the early 90's that was great at picking up and tracking known 'persons of interest' throughout Belfast. I know of many occasions where lives were saved because of it. The police were able to follow players after the system…

Our DBA is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. He keeps blocking Solarwinds from accessing the SQL databases after I used it to show him how very badly configured they were. Easier to hide the problems than fix them.

Google's hidden microphone. Might be off by default but, given the 'superb' security IOT has, who can turn it on and how do we know if someone has done that.

I'd love to use this kind of feature but management here won't allow most stuff without some sort of oversight through change control. I don't think they fully understand what we do or how IT works. I had an unresponsive server recently that I wanted to reboot and they asked me to put it through the CAB in 4 days time for…

I used my ever expanding Solarwinds Powers of Intuition and decided to wait a while for this one. Maybe the Geeks were at the same beer festival I was at on Saturday. I know I'm still a bit under the weather. Great British Beer Festival London 2019 | Great British Beer Festival

Makes my decision to avoid Facebook seem more and more wise.
-
Facebook. Every day I am more and more happy that I have never signed up for Facebook.
-
Quantum Leap - I guess they put the names of the continents on the map in case someone hasn't any idea of what the world looks like (I'm assuming Amurkins here).
-
And people laughed at me when I said I wouldn't use Facebook. I guess they aren't laughing now. I'd be very worried if I had used it.
-
I got the correct answer. It just isn't where the original poster said it was.

All good points but, here, we are only allowed a two hour window every week to patch and, with overtime banned, we lose one of those hours. One hour per week to keep 1000+ servers patched. No patching allowed outside this window. Management don't seem capable of understanding the risks.

Microsoft don't always get it right. In a meeting with them they offered us space in two data centres. We had specified that they MUST be in the UK for legal reasons. One was near London, the other was in Dublin. I, being from N. Ireland, exploded. For those of you not in the know, Dublin is NOT in the UK. It is the…

I'm not sure there are any exciting aspects of working in retail.

Boeing is just another example of businesses making extra money out of the 'features' in a product that you actually need but aren't in the original product that you have to have first.
-
Always a problem when you give up some of the control of your systems. IT can blame Microsoft for deleting the DBs but management will blame IT as it is still their responsibility. I wonder how many IT staff took a hit over this. Would they be able to sue Microsoft because they lost their jobs. Who knows.

Already signed up but will have to watch this one offline as it clashes with something else I want to watch. Sorry but you weren't my first pick Problem is that I want to watch all of them but can't do two at once.

Scooters aren't such a big problem in London as they are illegal to ride on the road or footpath. Dockless bicycles on the other hand are everywhere. At least the Boris Bikes have to be returned to a docking station or the rider loses their deposit.

Q9. Not complaining about this (I am a regular member of CABs so it is an easy one). Just making an observation that most organisations don't have a clue how a CAB should be used. Where I work we have a number of non technical people making technical suggestions on changes being proposed. It usually ends up in the farcical…

No it doesn't. It says something that doesn't match any of the answers. Sorry to be pedantic but that is what we all are after all.

Great article. That's pretty much what we have been telling management but they just aren't listening. The cloud will solve everything and support staff won't be needed - seems to be their approach. Pity we won't be around when it all goes wrong.
-
No idea of what the cloud will look like but I bet it will be a lot more expensive. Once they have you trapped they will put the price up and you will have no choice but to pay.
-
This IS one I have picked. Must remember to lock the door and sit up straight

Chrome extensions. No one ever reads through the documentation. They just want the extension to do what it says it will to solve their immediate problem. People still expect the developer to have done the job the way they assume it should be done. That's rarely the case. The only surprise here is that it's only 85%.

Ohhhh. I just about remember my days as a Cobol programmer. Now I need a lie down in a dark room. Not sure if it is fear or excitement. I suspect fear.
-
Not really surprised about Facebook not being secure. It's a perfect place for crims to gather personal information and therefore a huge target.

Yep. Order being delivered on Monday (to the UK).
