 No the server does not need a audio card. Did you have any alerts triggered when you logged in with the laptop? Mine gets me everytime but I am watching over 120 servers, 50 routers, etc lol. Once we renew our license info I'll be installing pollers for all the switches.

 Usually just a blank message..... I have tried All the status's and rates and nothing..

 wish that 15% would have applied to an additonal poller license lol. 13k for a poller is just crazy for a edu.

 you can added other sounds, look in the following folder c:\InetPub\SolarWinds\NetPerfMon\Sounds i actually have a wav file that says "theres something wrong" because thats the only thing people paid attention too. the admin guide will help too.

yea, See if this seems right to you. Suppress Alert when "any" of the following apply field "Node Status" is equal to value "Down" I just don't want to end up suppressing all nodes by any chance and am still learning the adv alerts.

Thanks Mark!! I started seeing a issue when adding several switches (50-60+) orion stops responding and have to restart, we changed the polling times around a little and are waiting to see how it does!

 I changed the alert to rate but cannot get the email part narrowed down...... probably a simple thing but i'm banging my head here.

 okay, least I know i'm not crazy now. I was monitoring the 1.2 that you were speaking of after realizing that the other always reported fine. Chalk up the fan 2 thing to another wonderful cisco product haha.

 i followed the diy and i do not recieve any alerts...... my apc monitor is running at 104 degrees and my alert threshold is 80 lol. (the 104 is a test envir)

 sort of. I have my down node set for 1 minute and my high packet loss set for 6 minutes so I'm looking at the timing now....

 I managed to get it to hit and miss on working....... I would like to see a orion version for a help desk that you could install a (non-changable) client that they could view active alerts and what not. They are trying to automate the entire process which is very time consuming.
