Good Article. Especially good for those who are not directly involved in cyber security (i.e. management types).

In my world, BYOD is a non-starter. However, in my opinion, were I to work in an environment where BYOD was permitted, I would still have a hard time allowing it. If I don't own it, I don't trust it. At the very least I would want a strong policy stating something like, you must consent to monitoring and if you don't like…

We got to see this demo today at the SWUG Denver. Very cool. Looking forward to it.

I have not heard of anyone doing so. v/r, Mike Greene

bsciencefiction.tv tripped most of my buttons. Tips and Tricks is always a big help. For me, I'm trying to get management on board to purchase and implement LEM, so anything around LEM setup and especially monitoring with LEM would be good.

According to the Cisco Nexus 5000 NX-OS Software Configuration Guide, Chapter: Configuring System Message Logging, the default outgoing facility is local7. I have changed all references from local2 to local7. I also edited the LEM Log File to /var/log/local7.log. Still getting "No Connectors Found" when I scan for new…

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you on this, busy, busy, busy... I am running ver 9.1(5). Have you tried going to https://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/Support/Errordecoder/index.cgi to look-up you errors? This is a pretty helpful tool cisco offers.

I heard from a friend yesterday that it is a MIB issue for all ASAs and will have to configure custom pollers if I want to monitor health statistics.
-
NPM shows it as a Cisco device, but does not recognize it as a network device under Hardware Health Overview. Only my Catalyst 3750 switches are recognized as network devices. My ASAs are running ver 9.0(2)

No redirect going on. Point of interest, I can ping from the switch in question back to the NPM server no problem.

Yes, I did. Below are the steps I took. In SolarWinds: Go to: Settings, Manage Windows Credentials, Add Windows Credentials (this is the username you will use in you ASA config). Now go to: Manage Node, Edit Node, select Most Devices: SNMP and ICMP, select SNMP version VNMPv3, SNMP Port: 161, check box to allow 64 bit…

This is very interesting. The printer was placed on a new subnet. I entered the subnet informaiton into NPM for network discovery and the printer was identified, however, it identified the printer IP with the subnet broadcast address. The printer address is actually the last usable address in the subnet. Not sure how the…

I did as you suggested. The syntax is a little different for NX-OS, so maybe you can double check me. I SSH into my switch and added the following commands: logging server x.x.x.x (my LEM IP) 7 use-vrf management facility local2 logging level local2 7 In LEM, I added a new connector called Nexus5K (real original) and…

An interesting concept and I like it, but this is a non-starter in my world. Too much CM to get through to make changes. Nothing is changed in-real time...Govt life, gotta love it.

If you drill down on the device, on the Summary tab, in the Management box, select "Edit Node. There you can change the device Name to be whatever you want (i.e. from Cisco ASA to Edge Firewall).
-
An impressive list. I'm looking forward to it.

We are having the same issue. Tried to upgrade today and it failed in the same place. Is there any answer out there?
-
I've been running NPM 12.0.1 and NCM 7.5.1 together for a few months now. No issues.
-
Check to make sure you have the IP of your polling engine and the interface it is on permitted in your ASA ACL.
-
Yes, Solarwinds Orion is compatable with Cisco ASA-5500, I have 5510's and I have it working. My configs are as follows: ASA... snmp-server group Authentication&Encryption v3 priv snmp-server user netspy Authentication&Encryption v3 encrypted snmp-server Authentication md5 hash priv aes128 hash snmp-server host inside ip…

What polling method are you using? I am using SNMPv3 on all of my network gear and am not experiencing an issue like you. I do have one Cisco ISR 4431 online and it is reporting correctly. Under Communication, I left it with default of Auto Determine.

It happens everytime I download a trial product.

Not sure what type router you are using, but I have a Cisco ASR configured like this, and it works fine. snmp-server group [groupname] v3 auth snmp-server host [ipaddress] version 3 auth [username] The snmp-server user line I had to use with my ASA, but not in the router. Hope this helps, good luck.

We use NPM for: Up/down status, Alerting, Top 10 to monitor CPU load and volumes by Disk Space Used, Node Aggregate Chart - Average Response Times, Hardware Health, Virtualization Summary, Reports (i.e. Availability - Last Month, Cisco IOS Image Details). We use NCM for: Scheduling configuration backups, Policy Violations…

Nice! SW should consider running with this, very funny.

I just went through the exact same thing you are about to begin. I decided to go for it and load the new version release and essentially start from scratch. This really wasn't a big deal since we had only been running previously for about 7 months. I had NPM and NTA to setup, but no additional pollers. So far so good a…
