I'll want to know the answer to #8, the only one I got wrong.

In our line of work it is virtually certain that one of your co-workers is a fan of the Doctor.

There's a typo in this. Do I win a no-prize? Shortcut Steps Sign up for the July 13 Products in Practice Databse Success Series webinar here. (Props to the first person to get the reference!)

I'm in-between positions, hopefully starting a new one soon with a company that uses SolarWinds. Once I do I will definitely be reviewing their service desk and ticketing system(s) and if necessary recommending changes.

Any car can fly. Once.

The most fun to have with a Rubik's is to solve it, remove and rotate the stickers on one corner piece, then mess it up. This makes it impossible to solve. You can also pop out the corner piece and rotate it, but that is harder and can break it.

Writing documentation is not only essential but also helpful, as it ensures you truly understand the system and can elucidate that another person in a concise and consistent manner. Furthermore creating the documentation requires you to consider the application as a whole, its stability, reliability, and availability,…

Multiple, unaligned, unlinked ticketing solutions. Sigh.

I'm hoping to start a new position soon with a company that uses SolarWinds, but don't know which specific products yet. Glad that thwack is here to help me help them get the best use out of their system.

Indeed I still on the steep part of the learning curve, though I can see it starting to level out, so I still need to delve into the manuals, training videos, and thwack, each useful in their own strengths. (I do still have "Huh?" moments, such as "VBScript in Trap Viewer? Huh?" )

I was on a stroll one day when I heard a strange sound down an alleyway. Being more curious than cautious I looked down the alley, when I was nearly bowled over by a frantic, yet friendly Englishwoman. After a minor misadventure I ended up giving her a note she promised to give me the next time we met. Oddly, when I…

I don't know whether to be amused by, confused at, or worried for the people of Solarwinds. We will definitely take advantage of this opportunity to review all the free tools. Thank you!

That brings us back to the subject of using our brains. An amusing yet important test at the new Meadowlands stadium before opening to the public was the simultaneous flushing of all the toilets, simulating the expected action at half-time. They thereby tested and proved an essential feature for the users of a new system…

You sing! Right, you're invited to the karaoke battle, along with Dez and me and whoever else offered to engage in a sing-along sing-off, if we ever find ourselves the chance. I promise to buy the first bottle of wine to lubricate our throats!

No, that's the Go'a'uld embassy building.

When will the recordings be available? My idiot computer failed to pop up the reminders, and my Gmail account didn't download the email reminder until two hours after the event ended.

Read today's question carefully and check carefully. D'oh!

The financial industry has similar requirements, ensuring personal data is not shared.

And we are all an end user to somebody else.

Our coffee packs are recyclable, and the coffee grounds are reused as fertilizer. As we all know this is the single greatest resource used by any group of techs. We also carry out regular analysis of resource usage of our servers, reporting physicals that could be virtualized or decommissioned, and virtuals that could be…

We have a security requirement to remove direct user access to servers wherever possible. We would prefer not to have to login to the server to access UnDP (plus Trap Viewer and Syslog Viewer). Having to access some components via custom GUIs local to the server is not practical or secure. Thank you.

Suddenly I find myself very thirsty for a beer. Or a margarita.

Bioarcheologist - that sounds like the person in the sci-fi horror movie who accidently unleashes a plague of ancient monsters, once thought to be extinct and known only from what were thought to be merely fossils, on the modern world.

You young whipper-snappers aren't old enough to remember days when physical servers could and would occasionally catch on fire. The technical term was "letting the smoke out", which we would explain to the non-technical was because some components in a computer ran on smoke, so when the smoke escaped it would no longer…

No, Squirrel Girl.

I want Magitech!

I missed the first week. I missed the chance to win a ship model. I build ship models for a hobby. I made myself sad. Sigh. Oh well, I didn't miss the second week! Hooray for Legos! (Except at 3AM when they become little land mines under bare feet. )

If it wasn't for users our jobs would be so much easier! Truly, though, thwack and other sites like it are an invaluable resource. Almost any problem we encounter has occurred at one or more other locations first and so we can rely on our peers' experience and knowledge. Of course, that also means that if I am the first…
