Even when nothing can go wrong it does. To expect more then that is unrealistic. Troubleshooting is part science, part intuition. Often it's impossible to document or even explain the intuition part. Everyone wants a root cause, and the reassurance that it will never happen again. Yet it's true even when nothing can go…

Technology can do some amazing things, Like being able to communicate with someone any where in the world. It sort of gives many the impression hey if we send someone over there and test the application we should all be good if we all decide to move our office to that new location, no engineering required I tested it…

One day I got a call to assist with a move. A business unit was moving from one part of a building into a newly refreshed work space. I got called because they learned at the last minute that some servers and routers located in an office needed to move as well. Simple when the business gave me permission, I would shut down…

If you need to do something, Do It, if you need to do it again write a script, I have found the thought process of creating scripting for even simple tasks leaves your brain a little more limber. Also it creates paper trail of scripts, add a little bit of discipline, before you know it everything will happen with the press…

My lucky day started on a Friday in July of 1986. I was working as an engineering technician for a large defense contractor. My team lead was working with the computer engineering department to develop software needed to control a HP3852, a modular testing platform. He was having difficulty get the assigned engineer on the…

No one is safe! I've been studying this, reading everything I can put my eyes on. Apparently explaining that this was a sophisticated attack does not go far enough. This group did not stumble upon an exploit they actually broke in to a code repository and installed it. It has me wondering how many land mines like this…

Remote access competition between corporate departments, Essential vs Non-Essential Employees??? Makes you wonder what that really means? Like maybe if I'm not "Essential" does that mean I won't be getting a paycheck on Friday??

Oh Oh, I would not dare utter the word development or Worse Disaster Recovery.... I was able to twist some arms and convince those in charge that I needed more production resources. (for High Availability) Just in case. All my systems are then allowed direct access to the Production environment at any time, Avoiding not…

I would add, Practice, Practice, Practice. I've probably installed each major upgrade 3 or 4 times before I finally break production. That doesn't mean I haven't had those nights where I was restoring the database are 4 AM hoping like hell there won't be a problem reinstalling the previous version.

Great Topic, I have long wondered if many even understand the Buzz words and acronyms they spew, and when you ask for simple clarification you get that "Look". This not some sort of secret clan we all belong to. Most of us work for a company that's looking to technology to simplify and bring efficiency so the company…

I have the same issue, voted, But didn't clear the mission item or award points.

Administration is subject to constant changes. The applications. the users, the business, How, What and Where is ever changing. Yet the process of understanding how a system works remains the same. Keeping a system operating within an acceptable range of operational parameters will likely continue to be the primary…

Go to the Node is down Alert, Select reset actions, Add Execute NCM action. Configure action to backup configuration.
-
There are examples if you search thwack for Alert Actions using an API for Teams, Slack, PagerDuty and others. Best practices would dictate configuring these actions on Alerts that require a Human to take action. Share these expectations with those targeted to receive these messages. Start small with a couple alerts. Test…

This might seem simplistic, Try selecting all the empty values in the custom property editor and set them to "Network Engineering". SWQL does not currently support COALESCE function. It might be possible to create a SQL query using COALESCE.

Log Analyzer can give you this information. All changes on Windows DNS are captured in the Windows Events. Other DNS systems use Syslog.

Try using POST instead of GET.

I tested the function on PowerShell on a Mac, no problem, Everything worked. Except use Invoke-WebRequest to retrieve file from Github.

You are on the right track. I have custom property fields for Vendor, Acquisition Date, Cost, Property Tag#. As well as all the location information, Other things I added was Support Vendor that included information about who and how a device was supported. One problem I ran into was having a historic list... Often there…

I have had this exact problem. The first time I needed to do this, I created a New Custom Property, With the New Name I wanted to use, Then using the Custom Property Editor page, I copied from the old custom property to the new custom property, 100 at a time since that was the limitation, This was tedious. When I satisfied…

Create a new account for that existing database. Even though you maybe confident you know the password for SA, It would not be a best practice to continue to use that account as it native to SQL installation. As long as you are SA equivalent when you connect to the database with the configuration wizard, The configuration…

My Orion servers would require proxy authentication to reach the internet. All license and installation activity must be completed offline. My problem is there are tools we use to warn and protect against this type activity and nothing, Big goose egg.. Not even a single email until the issue shows up in the newspaper...…

no sign we have any problem here, but since others might have a problem is good enough for our management team to pull the plug, It's like going back to the good old days where a user calls and you have to ask them what they think is wrong, and they reply everyone is experiencing slowness and they can't work. **bleep** I…
