The monopolies are already here. Now how we we make sure further innovation isn't destroyed? Net neutrality isn’t the only way to keep the internet fair. It’s just the only way in America. - Vox If I had my choice I would prefer no government interaction. But internet providers have been abusing their market share every…

The burnout article is great. I know I was burnout a while back. It took a random change in my day to day priorities which left all the other stuff behind to get me realize it. I love the structure this puts around things, although I know that me from 10 years ago would have resisted this. Today I mostly follow GTD both at…

I agree that protecting is the hard part, but I think that many places people want the protecting to be part of what they paid for in O365 or whatever. Its clearly not, but conversations about this topic haven't gone well. The "cloud" was supposed to make things cheaper, but we had to make some big changes to make external…

We have to get "stuff" for the new data center since of our current stuff will be used for DR or dev/test after a move. It feels like there isn't a technology that hasn't been looked at. NetApp will be our NAS, Pure our block storage, the network devices will be either Cisco or Arista, and we are moving to a leaf and spine…

It was a week after 9/11 and we got hit with a virus. Nimda. First we didn't know much about it, was it part of the attacks from a week before? What was it trying to do? It didn't take long to slow and stop it, but we still had manual clean up to do. I got assigned a trip to clean the systems that were impacted at the…

I don't know why, but I can't answer what I assume is intended to be "correct" when I know the correct answer isn't there. Maybe I need to find a way to relax.

That is a great summary, and I have had this conversation a few times. It turns out that people want to be scared of technology and stuff like this is easy to latch on to. There is plenty out there to fear, but this one doesn't cross that line for me.

Watching this type of information day to day is great to get you thinking about where you need to push your internal security forward. WIthout outside voices, everything seems great until its too late. Great write up!

Its clear to me the data we collect about our applications is starting to change, and will definitely create feedback loops that alter the monitored item. Micro-services are clearly a place where that makes sense, doing one thing with a defined input and output, but no dependencies outside of that make it possible to…

@"raymondakrawi" We gather flow data from about 110 devices currently but will change what sends data as needed, they are specifically picked to provide good information. We keep flow data for only a week, typically we won't need the details longer than that. Our database is in SQL, and has been for a bit, and it takes up…

Wow, going to have to read up on that story. So scary I hope its not true.

I am thankful that the team around me strives to be better than they are. None are will to accept things as they are, and bit by bit we move in the right direction.

Last year was a big storage refresh for our VMWare environments. Production was traditional spinning disk SANs for all servers. VDI had a combination of Flash Cards and local disk depending on the age of the implementation. We thought we would buy more of the same because of price but looked seriously at everybody. In the…

We only have a small group of pilot users in O365. Already we got a ticket when Microsoft was doing maintenance to Project online. Setting the users expectations for the new services is going to be a challenge.

If you want actual training for packet analysis consider: Wireshark University I first saw Laura Chappell (who runs that training) at MMS in 2012 in the "10 reasons you network is slow" session, and just that 45 minute talk got me moving in the right direction, and much better equipped to work with the network side of the…

That is what I did when I couldn't get a classic, but its not something that an average person would do. What I expect is that the SNES classic is coming this fall so they stopped this one to make people want it more.

Online abuse amazes and saddens me, but its fantastic that Thwack seems to maintain a positive atmosphere. Elsewhere its a real problem, I think it scares away too many people from communities that might otherwise benefit them.

I agree, I have no formal training and I just try to get the job done, so it was a good read for me.

@"rschroeder" I grew in Wisconsin so you are talking right to me. At Christmas I bake cinnamon rolls which is a tradition my mother in-law started when my wife was a child, and I make rosettes. Rosettes my grandma made, and I ended up with her irons. Its amazing how a sweet treat or amazing smell will take you back to…

Intel is headed for some rough times, but they have been such a cornerstone of IT that I have a hard time imagining what IT looks like without them. It might happen though
