I have enjoyed this series of articles. Thanks for posting. Makes me think about things.....

I work in the medical field and obviously security is umbra important. Fortunately, this environment lends itself to multiple layers of security for all connections. From ip reputation services on in the incoming and outgoing interfaces on the firewall, to multiple scrubbers and URL rewrites on incoming email, to extensive…

Slow apps and the need for improved skillsets will definitely be a factor in the coming year. As the technologies mature, business adoption increases, the skills needed will parallel that adoption. If any one of the links is slow, then IT gets the black eye. Above all other improvements and leaps forward, IT needs to be…

Any way to increase documentation is a great benefit to us all. The types of diagrams that you describe I am in the process of manually creating Visio diagrams for. I have over 50 data closets to map out.

Haven't made the move to IPv6 yet but this is good information.

That is an interesting concept to utilize the "View" from SAM as part of the security model. I was thinking about each step in the article and comparing the various applications that one must go into to get the information. Look at WSUS for patches, The Anti-Virus web console, etc. Having a uniform dashboard would be…

An interesting point of view. One that I will hang on to.

Thanks for this reference material. I think this will be beneficial for my environment as we move forward with our Cisco hardware refresh.

A lot of valid points and items that my first year comp sci professors used to convey daily to us. Some times I find myself spending days looking for examples where someone wrote a library or a function that I needed rather than just sitting down and coding out the details all in the ever quest to automate a task. Keep up…

Latency and security. Too much critical data could be exposed. Availability and SLA.

Thanks for posting. Food for thought!

I agree with rschroeder on the benefits of NCM. The real-time reporting has made things easier to understand when changes happen and who made the changes. The side-by-side view also allows understanding of what was changed. I am looking forward to seeing if SCM will provide the same benefits.

These are also good points. The permissions scope creep is one of the biggest issues I have faced and it is quite difficult to take away after people get used to having a particular access.
