Automation has the potential to go bad. You should approach automation with the same methodologies that you approach enterprise monitoring. Test. Trap for errors. Measure and report outcomes. We wouldn't think of deploying a new application monitor that wasn't tested, or a set of alert logic that hadn't been tweaked,…

I worked for an American automotive manufacturer for a number of years. We would frequently get calls about machines not working, etc. to which we always responded with the IT Crowd favourite "Have you turned your machine on and off?" One particular electrician was adamant that he had turned it on and off multiple times to…

Does that get overwritten when you do an upgrade? It feels like it might be but otherwise that is a pretty slick workaround!

You got it. If it is a statistics in NPM, SAM, NTA, etc. then you can create a single dashboard view. Granted it might be a very busy dashboard so good UX design principles still apply.

Here's our story. We had a team that wanted to extract daily rollups of performance data. We had initially proposed using the API but a few things kept us from going that route -- 1) No ability to limit the rate, scope, or frequency of API-based queries, 2) No testing of the API beyond 200K rows returned, and 3) Lack of…

When people (OK, its Cloud people -- curse them! <shakes fist>) ask me about data retention and I have to tell them I roll up detailed data after 7 days they laugh at me. Their tools (or the ones they want) do 20 or 60 second intervals and keep it around *forever* (ok, not really forever, but that's what they tell me!) I'm…

I'm up there with kong.yang -- I think virtualization will become ubiquitous with computing as the Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) finally becomes a mature technology. Scalability will be the new architectural trump card at all levels of the enterprise. Startups have been doing what enterprises should have been doing…

The data actually exists but it is hidden in SWQL. If you install and run the SWQL Studio you will find a table called Orion.NPM.InterfaceErrors that contains PercentDiscards, PercentErrors, ReceivePercentErrors and TransmitPercentErrors. Both queries are checking the data at the collection interval in your environment, a…

fcaron That would be an application killer for sure. The one issue that the application teams have been asking us about as we use DPI is "Can you tell me about the packets between endpoint X and endpoint Y?" DPI isn't built for that level of analysis which is where WireShark comes into play. If there were a way to say…

Ahh sorry, I do some freelance work in the evenings. This was for one of my customers, not my day job In my life it is Solarwinds, all-day, every day!

I remember doing a usability review last year with katieb and I said something very similar. At the time I had just turned down a prestigious role to move into a 100% enterprise monitoring role and I said to her: "I believe in Solarwinds [and by extension, enterprise monitoring] so much that I was willing to stake my…

Sign me up! Funny story, I actually looked at relocating to NZ about a decade ago. Cold feet kept us from going. Now I have cold feet from having cold feet. <sigh>

That automatic monitoring is awesome. The only thing that is going to prevent us from using it is the ability to add exceptions based on volume. (This comment is made based on what is written above not an actual test of the beta.) Now my only problem is not enough time to play with the APM 6.3 beta while preparing for our…

Hmm, I know that there was a schema reference document when the changes from Orion 2014.2.1 to Orion 2015.1.2 were made. I bet that same sort of thing exists. Did you check Success Center - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support ?

I think that the trend towards consumerization of IT is driven by more than just simple economics, although that has certainly accelerated the adoption. The ubiquity of technology, as you pointed out, has increased the comfort level of all age groups with 'geeky' things, but I think it is the return to centralized…

Perfect. In spite of it being less functionality, that is exactly what I needed right now. (I bet you don't hear that too often!)

I second this sentiment. Many of us will be setting our training goals for the year as well and early 2015 is a great time to get a commitment to attend a user conference.

Super awesome! A little disappointed to not see IBM in that list of supported devices but hopeful that will make it into the list by the time the production release is ready to go. If we proceed with an implementation of Storage Manager is there a nice upgrade path with data preservation, etc or is this a rip and replace?

brad.hale, when the documentation says that a node can handle up to 50 applications, I assume that means a single SPAS/SNAS? Want to make sure before I start deploying single SPAS collectors in data centers with more than 50 applications. I wasn't sure if node meant the collector or if it meant the monitored nodes in the…

Automation is going to extract monitoring teams from the deep, dark recesses of the IT department and shove us, whether we like it or not, into the glaring light of day-to-day business operations. In order to automate you need to know how your business flows, where the costs are, where the time is spent and how you can…

Data analytics. Even as we explore the adoption of all the aforementioned technologies the one thing that all of the teams come back to is making better decisions faster. In order to do that they need more complex data sets presented in ever more dynamic fashion. We also noted that there is significant symbiosis and…

It's funny how users (and the IT department is often the worst offender!) seem to reject the idea of control. What is it the makes Apple products so successful? OK, they do design some beautiful hardware, but it is the closed eco-system that (mostly) protects users from engaging in activities that might harm them or their…

Here here! One of the best parts about Solarwinds is their dependency on community engagement to drive product growth. The mash industry expertise, trends and customer demand for both features and design considerations. When was the last time vendor X asked for your opinion about their software in such an open and…

2017. Time for this to become a reality.

Before the chaos ensues about entering the phrase this week remember, punctuation and grammar matter! That is all.

Curious if you are concerned about the IO impacts of using SSRS on your production databases? Are you extracting all of the data sets (NPM, SAM, UnDPs, etc.) or just a subset of data? We will be using Splunk as well, but only for a subset of data -- primarily the logs from the pollers, etc.

How does one define 'pertinent'? I usually find myself wishing that I had chosen to collect a specific piece of data when I need to do an RCA. Hindsight is unfortunately 20/20.

I remind my kids of that all the time -- and more frequently as I grind out the next 20+ years towards retirement.
