Did anything ever come of this discussion? I would like to know because I'm looking for some "best" ways to organize SolarWinds.
-
I reread you post. I see you're using the suffix for versioning.
-
Thanks Bob! Very helpful!
-
Thank you Pratik. I did create an Orion account but to be safe I felt more comfortable with just giving it read access to the modules that we use. Can always add more rights. Thanks for you help!

Good point. If the app team has admin in Sam but maybe the systems team normally manages nodes and the related alerts then I can offload the responsibility of the custom requests to the app team by giving them their own template and letting them go crazy with it. They do not have access to SAM and I don't envision them…

Luther - So in your image, each number corresponds to a prefix number corresponds to a different module within SW is that correct? And what is the suffix for?
-
And luckily it was part of an App Monitor.
-
That is exactly what I did. Took me a while to find it. As usual you are exactly on point!
-
And what happens if you MUTE a node that is part of an app mon? Will the app monitor still alert if the node is muted? I'm assuming the mute ONLY applies to the node and not the app monitor if the app monitor is looked at as a different object.

The DNS entry is updated via rediscovery using the DNS servers configured on the SolarWinds server. Understood. You mentioned the SolarWinds server is still in the old domain - if those DNS servers still return the entry SERVERNAME.ABC.COM, then that is what SolarWinds will show. So if the DNS entries for the migrated…

For anyone who else who may read this thread our environment is on 2020.2 FYI.

None of the servers we monitor have the "Dynamic IP Address (DHCP or BOOTP)" box checked in their node settings. For the servers themselves, I will have to check if they register their suffix in DNS in the IP configuration.
-
Sum - Thanks for responding. I ended up removing the node and then doing Network Discovery on the node again. Also, let me expand on what I did in case this is relevant. I create a group with the logic of BusinesUnit_AppName_Environment so for example ENG_SalesForce_PRD. All of the production servers for that app suite…

Thank you. I will check it out.
-
Bob - Can you share your naming convention? Thanks!
-
Yes it does. Versions of NTA AFTER 4.2.3 need a separate database and I was looking for a separate database on another installation and when I didn't find one, I needed to check that previous to 4.2.3, the databases were not separated. Thanks for the info.

Follow up. Is there a query for the Assigned Application Monitors view? FL
-
Thank you Tony!
-
Pratik - Even though we're using AD for authentication, I'm assuming the account can be an Orion account or a local server account? Does it really need to have admin access for SN to pull the information? That seems a bit much to be able to just read.
-
Thanks. That is what I was thinking.
-
Ravik - Thanks for your help. No need to respond my follow up questions. I had a call with Tech Support today and they answered my follow up questions. Thanks for getting me started on the path to get this resolved. Regards, FL

Ravik - Thanks for the reply. Great info. In the rush we already built the server. I think we're going to have to revisit the sizing. My original recommendation was to have SQL on a separate server, just as a matter of practice in separating services and workload. I read the docs in the links. If I understand the…

I have a list of subnets that I have been scanning but the list I was provided have some /16 networks which are too large to scan. A seed router will not help unles there is a way to distinguish the end device. The question still remains, how to handle large /16 subnets?

Thanks for the info. Got sidetracked with some other tasks but picking this back up now. I'm looking at using the File Count Monitor in SAM to fulfill this request. My question is looking at the settings for the Statistic Threshold, how do those work? The developer needs to get an alert if new files are added. So let's say…
-
I decided to go with option 1. The reason I considered option 2 is because I may still need to create custom app monitors for these servers because there are other processes that may need to be monitored for the application. If I had the app monitor already created, then when additional processes need to be added I could…
-
Final follow up to this. Testing the File Count monitor component looks like it's going to be the solution. My last question is if there is a way to monitor the creation/deletion of directories in SW? All of the file monitors I've seen need to specify a file when necessary. The only directory monitor I see monitors…

Did you ever get an answer to this? I had about 40 on each of my two servers that suddenly disappeared. Thought I was going crazy that I deleted them, even went and ran an audit report on myself with nothing to explain why they were missing until I saw this post.

Did you ever get a response from anyone regarding using Orion to do this? I just posted the same question before I saw this thread.
