Apparently this is a "long standing request" and was done by design. They are going to be making this configurable in a new patch. Here is the thread.

Go to system manager right click the node and choose node details then delete the current Name (highlight and hit backspace) and then hit enter it will obtain the new hostname of the device then click Apply Chanages.

I too would have to agree with vhcato. I couldn't imagine trying to manage all of my devices using the web interface, it is god awfully slow.

It's a little more work but here is what we did. We imported a line from visio and named it "blank dot". When we want to connect two devices we connect the links to the "blank dot" object instead of connecting them directly to each other.
