I saw @adatole mention this in the chat during Thwack Camp but didn't understand what it was. Thanks for the explanation. Just joined.

It's funny - I was thinking the same thing re: enjoying monitoring. I don't want it to happen every day, but I always find it interesting (maybe even fascinating) to be presented with a question about performance or some odd issue and I really have to go digging to find it. That said, the tools you have at hand are huge.…

Appreciate the post paul.parker. Nice write up.

Good post. Thanks. One of the things that bothers me about all the cloud "hype" (for lack of a better term - I don't really mean it in a derogatory way) is that there is an implied assumption that the application environment can be rebuilt/refactored to be cloud native. So much of the software that enterprises run doesn't…

Thanks for the post. There are a lot of things I'd thought about re: AI and automation but you point out some that hadn't occured to me yet. Thanks.

The training requirement is interesting. We're running into that problem now with departments not making sure that knowledge is effectively transferred as new hires move in and staff moves/retires. lt's an ongoing need, but one that is seldom addressed effectively.

Definitely agree wholeheartly with your first point, but what scares me most often is the ongoing ignorance of the young developers that assume everything is secure by default and have such a narrow understanding of how things work (usually limited to their view of the world) that they don't even have a framework for…

Good post. Thanks. Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts as you expand on this. Dealing with wireless on the kind of scale you're talking about would be a major challenge.
-
Congrats to all the winners!

Thanks for a bunch of interesting links. Great snow/fire angel. Wish I lived somewhere that it snowed consistently. Miss it a lot.

Definitely agree. Although I always get multiple useful tips and new things I learn, even one is worth taking the time.

Awesome prizes this month! Was really pulling for #darktheme on the first question, but I resisted.
-
Oh, and BTW - really looking forward to the session on the API. Sounds interesting.

Love the mini missions! Thanks!

I've never done very well on those reading scale things either. My first draft is always too high and it takes several cuts to get it down to where it's acceptable.

Thanks again for another edition of my favorite Geek Speak post. Really interesting set of links this week. Had no idea about the hidden camera thing (we're not Airbnb fans) but it could happen anywhere. Definitely going to start keeping my eyes peeled for that.

Thanks explorevm . Looking forward to the "Battle of the Clouds" series

Gotta wonder what the ROI is on robotic pizza delivery. When you pay a human, they cover the car and insurance and you give them a low wage and maybe mileage. Not sure what the margins are on pizza, but the cost may be going up. On the other hand I'm sure someone out there will order from Domino's using the robot just for…

Love the mini missions. Awesome prizes too. Thanks!

Yes! Snickers are healthy! I was always hoping that was true. As always, thanks for a bunch of interesting links. Your fire pit looks great in the fall, although a bit damp at the moment.

The only thing I hate more than too many alerts is silent alerts (the ones you don't get that you *really* *really* *really* needed to get).

It's going to be interesting to see how it all shakes out. I can see how GPDR could fly in the EU - trying to do that in the US, can't see it.
-
Good post, thanks. Are you using Solarwinds, the vendor's software or something else as the automation framework?

I don't necessarily *miss* them per se, because they could be a pain at times, but I have fond memories of riding around with my best friend in his '69 Firebird listening to 8 tracks. We about wore out "Houses of the Holy" by Led Zep. They were great because there was no rewinding, and you could jump from track to track.…

Interesting way of looking at the problem. Hadn't heard of Bimodal IT before, although I've definitely experienced it. Thanks for the writeup.

I like how you turn a lot of these inside out like a sock. I do subscribe to some of them though - as someone posted in an earlier comment, the are useful (and I think true as well) within a certain context. Like many things that work in certain situations people then start trying to apply them too broadly and they just…

Interesting read. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Thanks.

Same here re: the cloud. We use an integration service that's based in Azure that has become mission critical and is highly time sensitive. The outage yesterday took us out completely and it's *still* not back up. In many years of hosting it ourselves we never had an outage that lasted more than a couple of minutes.…

I've always found cloud to be such a strange thing - like there is no data center with physical hardware anywhere. There is and always has been, just with cloud someone else owns it, and that owner probably has interests that don't exactly coincide with yours.

As always, thanks for a bunch of great links sqlrockstar! What could possibly go wrong with using assets at a nuclear power plant to mine cryptocurrency? Wow. I knew they could do the deep fake stuff, but I had no idea it could be done more or less real time. Pretty scary.
