I'm amazed that people continue to buy in to the whole crypto currency thing. I guess that just proves the old saying "there's a sucker born every minute". The siren call of get rich quick just never seems to lose it's appeal I guess.

That's a serious grill you've got there. As always, thanks for a bunch of interesting links!

Years ago I overheard a conversation from a remote tech we had in our LA office. He was trying to free up space and was asking to have his rights upgraded to full sysadmin (this was on a Novell network) because couldn't delete some files to free up some space. This guy was always a problem and was constantly complaining he…

Interesting post. Thanks. Although I totally agree with the don't buy the one big tool approach, I've also seen where the DevOps folks started chasing every new technology just because it was cool or everyone was doing it (or worse, because they wanted it on their resume).

Woo WHO. Love Dr Who.

congrats to all the winners!

Good post, thanks. I've think you've hit on the essential points of the process you need to go through, especially defining what exactly it is you want. Too many times it seems more like a "let's do it first and figure out the why later" type thing. There are definitely some caveats to SAAS - you may not own or be able to…

I don't see a problem. All the answers are there if you read the whole thing.

And in the "you've got to be kidding" department, pwn'ing your network via an IOT outlet is now a thing. Just wow. Maybe having light bulbs connected to the net isn't such a great idea after all.

We've had an AI initiative / exploration going because we have some folks in leadership that bought into the hype. The problem is it's about 10 years too early from what we've seen. It sounds cool, and definitely wins points with the crowd that always wants to be on the leading edge, but the reality is well short of the…

Thanks. Sounds like a great session. Signed up and camping out to make sure I get a good seat.

Thanks. Your experience mirrors what I've seen. I know a few all-in DevOps folks that use containers and kubernetes all the time (but just because it's the flavor of the day, not because there is a huge value proposition). Mainstream, almost no one. I do know some folks (maybe 10-15%) that have a win case for Docker alone,…

Nailed it. Great post mrdenny . Technical problems are not what will bite you, it's people problems. There is a principle in "Good to Great" that really illustrates this - get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and make sure the right people are sitting in the right seats. If you haven't done that,…

Thanks for the post. Really enjoying this thread.

Never heard of Action Park. I'm definitely one of the folks that would have gone though.

Really enjoying this series. Thanks for posting.

Thanks. Good write up. The toolset definitely needs to be sized to the organization/needs, but the people component is perhaps the most important factor. It doesn't matter if you have great tools if your staff isn't at the place they can use( and maintain) them properly.

Love the Jeep by the way. Great color.

I'd like to leave behind the endless calls and emails from vendors trying to sell me a product I don't need to solve a problem I don't have.
-
The biggest problems I've seen are not so much in being able to P2V the environment - most of the time I can shut down the DB for the conversion so that's not an issue. I've seen a ton of issues where the DB is contending for resources in the cluster and you get a lot of weird latency issues. Almost all the VM environments…

As always, thanks for an interesting set of articles. Really enjoy these.

Absolutely agree. Just about every vendor is doing it, and some are getting downright obnoxious about it. There are some niche services that we use that are pushing this so hard it's obvious that someone up top has decided that this will be a great new revenue stream for them. However, just because Microsoft can pull it…

Love the headline. Definitely an attention grabber. I've had way too much experience lately with AI and IVR with Cox, Verizon IBM, and a couple of other vendors and I can tell you it has a *long* way to go. It's basically some automated predefinited rabbit trails for specific problems and if your problem isn't on a…

Definitely true. The other thing that's really important (and often lacking from what I've seen) is making sure the staff knows how to use the tools.

Don't know how I missed this the first time around rschroeder, but I'm glad it popped up in the feed this morning. Awesome stuff. Thanks!

Congrats cpipkin!

Great example of what can happen with isolated grounds rschroeder. Seen so many things like that bite us over the years. Hadn't heard of it with regard to audio but it totally makes sense.

Thanks for the postian0x0r. I think your quote is bang on - 'First and foremost, rental models can work out more profitably for the vendor selling the goods.'. That's the biggest reason we're starting to see subscription only everything. And if we as consumers roll over and play dead, it may not be very long before it's…

Actually if you open the PDF it's right there in the Collector Requirments.
