  • I've been trying to make the "how do we restore crap we've broken" argument repeatedly and somehow they believe that it'll never come to that. Our people type very carefully, surely fat fingering won't take down the network, etc. I'll have to wait until a "WE COULD HAVE DONE THIS WITH NCM" moment to resolve it.
  • Sadly this part is quite obtuse rschroeder - I wasn't able to find anywhere the actual company name being identified until after cisco gave it to me. Total d'oh moment.
  • I actually posted in their thread and got a response immediately. I'd try posting here instead of calling first, maybe? https://supportforums.cisco.com/blog/12919231/self-service-onboarding-set-solarwinds-ncm-provide-data-smart-net-total-ca…
  • Whoa, whoa hold on! bobmarley For node a/b, are you saying these aren't routers and/or there are routers between them? Even EPL/fiber has worked for me. Copying cobrien, maybe he has some ideas for troubleshooting this or what else we need to ask. I feel I'm missing some critical question to help out here.
  • we should then tag jkuvlesk as she can find/fix URL's. (see above please! )
  • To flag them as eligible, you'd need to have them polled via SNMP or WMI I believe, but I'm sure there's info on QOE requirements that state this as well.
  • jeremymayfield not to go outside of thwack too much, but it might be a good time for you to find a *good* resume service, and have some open talks with one or many of them. The questions they may ask of you may help you understand your purpose. Also remember that IT titles vs actual skillsets tend to have nothing in…
  • See comment above - hitting repair is not a fix. Scroll to the right, find out what it needs, fix it. Repair isn't always able to fix everything, some of this needs to be done manually.
  • How about try running config wizard in admin mode? This can (and has in the past) actually made a difference with regards to successes.
  • Naturally this won't pick up long term trends as you yourself note, but it absolutely will pick up if a project volume changes should you tune this accordingly.
  • my fairly uneducated guess along with this is, could this be AD replication?
  • uniswtc the alert rule is that you're alerting on down nodes. If you want to take it a step more granular you can use a custom property on the related nodes. You can simply alert on node status down, because if the parent node goes down the child node's alerts will be suppressed as they'll be marked unreachable. This…
  • rschroeder is this supposed to be a cisco NAC? You should only have to span the interface that the flows come back to Orion on. Have all flows be on their own vlan and then only span that VLAN to destination 2, provided they're in the same location? Just an idea. That's if you need live flows. To summarize what everyone…
  • You will want to look at custom properties, they are designed for this - your network is static, the things being introduced are not. So you introduce a custom property to either filter a: only the new things which won't have it, or b: only the things with the custom property.
  • Custom properties can be associated with whatever - interfaces, nodes, etc. They can be updated through scripts and/or updated en-masse. So you can update 10-100 of a particular custom property for $tech at a time. If the map is static but the only change is the details, that would fix a part of that. You can indeed make…
  • I'd be careful with this question, it opens quite a can of worms sometimes The correct answer will always be "it depends", depending on circumstances/focus/goal/access requirements/etc. This is not a question with as simple an answer as it sounds.
  • Understood, thank you!
  • I wouldn't try to get too many things going at the same time. Maybe first get your DB off of your main solarwinds server, give it enough horsepower and get it built out properly as adatole mentions, and maybe come up with a plan for migration. Too much at once in too many directions will just make things more difficult.…
  • A lot of products seem to be coming together for release due to interface changes (appstack). aLTeReGo, I don't know if you can answer this or not - are many of the products coming together with RC's now because of both NPM RC being almost ready and the appstack model change as well? Just wondering.
  • stevenwhunt is this something meant to be addressed via NPM (core)?
  • wait, are you using a UNDP to poll via custom mib? That should work if you find the right mib, but I don't remember who discusses supported MIBs. I think if you do a mibwalk and submit it someone handles it. Maybe cobrien remembers who it is? Solarwinds supports a massive mib that they update frequently that you can…
  • Alert manager: Basically everything before the new NPM and SAM had alerts managed via alertmanager on the server. Now you can do *all* of the alerts from the orion web console, and you have a lot more flexibility in how alerts are triggered/conditions/etc. Gigantic, gigantic improvement. All of this was rolled out in NPM…
  • rileymat Have you considered a few NOC views for pages that need it? That's usually my first suggestion, as well as a few good network atlas pages can go a long way. You can put absolutely *Anything* you monitor into a group - be it a folder, a server, a switch, an interface, etc - and aggregate all of that into an up/down…
  • Ok, so let's circle around a little with the basics of what SAM does. orioncrack is on the same page as I am here in that you need to define an alert to fit your criteria. When you do list resources for a server in Orion, all you're picking is what to monitor from a default list. That's not even all of the options…
  • So, relatively good news. You can use discovery to simply try to add everything and it won't cause duplicates if you already have them in orion. You can even just copy + paste the ip addresses or hostname lists, or just tell solarwinds what subnets to use if it's an entire subnet. Look into settings -> network discovery…
  • the CMDB contains whatever you define as a CI, so I can see why this would get confusing
  • Well, what are you trying to do? What is this schedule supposed to make happen?
  • While I don't have much to say about your concern about licensing, I'm also disappointed that NTM does appear to be somewhat dead (at least feature-wise). My reasons are more that they haven't a: looked for an alternative (we'd love one), or b: at least said that it's EOL or something. The application works decently for…
  • wluther I'm sure it's on their list and probably high up, but I'm guessing there's something causing an issue in rewriting basically the entire system of permissions. I mean it's not like is new.
  • I'm conflicted a bit from the same concepts; solarwinds UI beats SCOM enough that people want to use it but there are such limitations built in that it becomes an issue. Like: why do I end up having to do rest-apis just to get around the total lack of integration between Orion and service-now, for example?
