  • We have been using Infoblox Network Automation (formerly Infoblox NetMRI, formerly Netcordia NetMRI) for this purpose as it checks device versions against published vendor lists of known vulnerable releases, or releases with serious flaws. Since vendors publish this information (at least Cisco does), this kind of check…
  • We have a lot of PowerShell scripts running to tell us the status of O365 and Exchange Online. We also collect oData in Excel for dashboards. There are several vendors with monitoring solutions everywhere from elegant to garbage. AppInsight for O365 would be great.
  • Lancope Stealthwatch, Plixer Scrutinizer, ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer have extensive drill-down capability into conversations. NTA drills down to the exporting interface. We don't normally care about the exporting interface; we care about the conversation, or any/all conversations between nodes or groups of nodes.
  • The majority of our systems are Linux and we have scientific collaborations world-wide, and we have several remote locations for experiments. These are all using Linux systems, so a Linux probe would be extremely useful. We develop out own Linux OS distribution tailored to our scientific mission, but it is based on Red Hat…
  • When drilling into a conversation, I get to the point where I see the exporting interfaces. When drilling into a conversation I need to see the endpoints, and possibly all conversations between those endpoints. Normally I don't care about the exporting interfaces when I'm looking at NetFlow, I care about the endpoints and…
  • It is very annoying to have physical and virtual memory obscuring actual disk volume issues. The Top 10 charts are filled with irrelevant data, and we have had to constantly adjust disk volume alerts as memory keeps creeping back into disk volume alerts. While this may be a Microsoft issue where they don't know the…
  • We have 3 additional polling engines that are largely idle, but are approaching the element limits. This element limit has to be somewhat arbitrary in how SolarWinds polling databases work. Selling additional polling engines is a way to general license revenue, but as I license additional Orion modules I'm already paying…
  • We create our own Network Weathermaps using PHP Network Weathermap, which gets its data from MRTG. Why use MRTG when we have Orion? So we can create Network Weathermaps, of course! This entire process is extremely manual, so some EASY way to create custom weathermaps would be most welcome.
  • We looked at Datamotion and others and for a variety of reasons their solutions didn't work for us. We are now investigating a terrible idea using Microsoft OneDrive (aka SharePoint). Some form of file repository, secure storage and access system would be ideal for transferring sensitive documents and recording who…
  • I received a comment that the "multi-object resource graph" has been deprecated and that I should use the "Custom Chart" instead. Actually, I am using the Custom Chart and the Custom Object Resource to generate some simple graphs with multiple-objects that take several minutes to render. Using SolarWinds DPA, it appears…
  • We use Infoblox for IPAM. Functionally, it does pretty-much everything we want. They have a full-featured Perl API and recently added a full-featured WebAPI. We wrote our own front-end to add and remove IP and MAC addresses using their API. Orion would give us the "single pane of glass" access and allow us to retire at…
  • The new NetPath in v12 is almost there. Now add the waterfall charts!
  • Palo Alto Firewalls Aruba Mobility Controllers
  • Like others, I can log in to CCO and Active Advisor, but the NCM Connector says I have an invalid ID. This looks like a pretty cool tool, if it would only work!
  • A similar chart to mimic is the TCP Waterfall Chart in WPM Transaction Step Details. A Traceroute graph is to locate path latency, similar to latencies of each component or step in a Web transaction. This would clearly show latency between router hops, and could show router latency at each router along the path.
  • In NPM, non-Administrators can create groups but in NTA only Orion Administrators can create IP groups. This makes for extra work by Orion Administrators. NTA should be able to use the node groups tat already exist, plus non-Administrators should be able to create IP groups.
  • We are planning to purchase another flow monitoring system because NTA's focus is on the exporter and not on the flow itself. Because of this, NTA data is simply a nice window on an NPM web page, but it isn't useful for tracking data flows or anomalies. NTA may have the capability buried someplace, but it is too difficult…
  • We are using SaaS providers more and more and it would be great to analyze the paths, hop counts, latency between and within router hops when confronting a vendor with performance problems they blame on our ISP. We have SAM and WPM and they help once we get to a vendor's site but they don't help to see what is along the…
  • Our disk setup is RAID 1 for Operating System, RAID 1 for TempDB files, RAID 1 for SQL Logs, RAID 10 for NetPerMonDB. What is the syslog message rate limit you mention above? I have over 500 systems sending syslog messages. I recently added the message filter to drop lower priority messages, but that is going to be applied…
  • The same performance issue exists in new charts I create using Custom Object Resource. I'm using SAM 6.2.0 and NPM 11.5.0.
  • I was able to create the syslog filter - the graphics were very helpful. I'm having difficulty with the Trap filter. I can search for the OID and find it, but I can't get that string into a filter rule. A step-by-step process with images for Traps would be very useful!
  • Our polling engines are on VMware virtual servers, and our VMware hosts have Windows Datacenter licenses so I can spin up a new Windows server quickly and without paying any more to Microsoft. I could add more Orion polling engines if the cost was not $15-18K + annual maintenance. For me, the artificial 12K element limit…
  • Since upgrading to NCM 7.5, only devices polled by our main Orion server are backed up. Nothing is being collected by the additional polling servers. SW Support said to uninstall the Orion Improvement Program from the additional polling servers, however OIP is only on the main Orion servers. OIP is the culprit? Really? We…
  • This has been happening to me also, where syslog service on my additional polling servers crash every day or so. When I contacted SW support, they said my SQL server was too slow and that was the end of it. (My fault as my 24 Core, 128GB RAM, 4TB SQL Server is too slow...). I would allow that we are sending too much…
  • I'm also interested in the indexes, and how you knew what to index. As for the possible underpowered SQL server, it has 24 cores, 128GB RAM, Log files on local RAID 1 disks and data on a 1 TB 8Gb FC SAN array. The server has low utilization of everything including disk IOPS. Database "maintenance plans" run nightly. I…
  • Though a relatively old post, this issue persists as I have several multi-objects charts in several "dashboard" views what are agonizingly slow to load. I've had to make the charts almost useless by limiting the timeframes because users simply gave up and opened service tickets that Orion had crashed when they simply…
  • We would also like to participate. We have 60,000+ flows per second from about 40 routers and about 400 interfaces. Most transit/uplink connections are aggregated 10Gb interfaces and we just installed a 100Gb interface to our ISP and are planning a second. We transfer about 15TB per hour across our network. We have NTA in…
