Yeah...fast forward worked. And there was no requirement to receive an email to proceed. Infer what you will...

Seems like anyone working in a change controlled environment would likely be risking their job if they were to complete the second half of the mission. I can just see the look on my employers' faces when I explain why we need to install GNS3. And needing to create an installation plan, testing plan, recovery plan...

Microsoft presenter downloads Chrome after Edge fails Love it. Too bad it wasn't a blue screen. Yeah, I know. Schadenfreude.

I like Jack Handey's take on this subject: Watch Deep Thoughts: Laughter Is the Best Medicine From Saturday Night Live - NBC.com Blame Jack Handey, he made me do it.

Gotta take him with a huge grain of salt though, especially after he went off the rails. Funny - Star War's Jedi council, interviewing for 1999 MTV movie awards host - YouTube

I suppose if this was implemented and worked well, it might overlap VNQM sales. I remember when NPM did more topology stuff (ConnectNow)...it probably overlapped a licensed product.

For a while I thought HBSS purpose was to break SolarWinds. Eventually I learned that wasn't the case everywhere. But can sure get you spinning your wheels if you didn't know it was there or believed it to not be enforcing. Wish I could get those HBSS-fighting hours back. Would amount to weeks I'm sure.

Are we saying that the first root cause identified is a false positive? That's kind of a stretch. You take this part as useful (well, not the red part of the topology...probably just a coincidence that it's red) and close your eyes to this part and this "We judge a book, by it's cover and read what we want...between…

While SolarWinds shares some of the blame, Vanilla Ice and to a certain extent David Bowie do as well. Depending on whether 'Under Pressure' was a contributing factor to Mr. VanWinkle's songwriting.

If I get one more username and password combination, I'm going to volunteer to be microchipped like a schnauzer.

Seeing the bacon shirt has given me the sudden urge to procure a Beggin Strips shirt. (Dogs don't know.)

I keep telling people that if they are striking off Linux as an option, man are they missing out. I haven't really bought software for fifteen years, and I don't miss paying for software. I am at the point where I would have to be paid to use MS stuff instead of my Linux boxes at home. I think Microsoft has really only…

As Lenovo taught us recently, consider the ethics and the motivations of the business that get your money. Is the cheapest solution a tradeoff in your security? Is this device going to attempt to phone home (Are you denying by default so that such a device can't succeed in phoning home? Are you logging so that you could…

Definitely thwack. Which has given me Slack access as an MVP. Which leads to more networking. Haven't been to a SWUG yet. Attending industry conferences leads to interesting reunions. In contracting and all its fluidity, it feels like 2-3 degrees of separation. If you are an identical twin like me, you know more people…

The concept of invisible fences immediately made me think of Apple, and then Microsoft. Whether it it Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, LEDE, DD-WRT, there are so many options to the fenced in ecosystem. Sadly, the non-IT folks and the non-curious IT folks sometimes never discover these escapes from the fences they are accustomed…

Why doesn't CTRL-F work in a video? What's up with that?

Regarding this week's prize... A network device that is always listening for my voice seems really creepy. I love shopping via Amazon, but I guess that's where I draw the line. Reminds me of the doll that records kids' voices and uploads.

Doesn't have to be an either/or, does it? Multiple URLs can get you to the same content. Do we have to choose? I can go to http://p.p or to http://config.privoxy.org and see the same management page as well, so my home nerd experience suggests that there are no obstacles to an enterprise leveraging short URLs and…

From what I've seen, folks who come across as knowing everything (actively) get to twist in the wind when it's time to deliver as everyone takes a step back. Those who may know more than most others but are not obnoxious about it are mentoring others. Surrounding yourself with greatness and learning from one's coworkers…

I love tcpick command on Linux systems as Wireshark workaround. Obviously tcpdump with a grep helps too, but to just get an understanding of traffic flow, tcpick has saved me so much time. My brother's phone could connect to the IPFire wifi I set up, but Android messages and lack of working applications indicated he had…

The side benefit of leaving the work that causes burnout is the breadth of experience you should already be seeking. I think my nightly sudoku fix does wonders for stress relief.

Driverless cars freak me out. I think if people get used to trusting the car, they will use the time for snapchat/ facetube/ cat videos/ selfies. People already can't be bothered to use blinkers, or they flick them on at the last second when the presence of their vehicle in your lane is more obvious than the blinker. My…

Some vendors seem to be moving on from SNMP. Microsoft seemed to give it half-hearted support at best. Cisco Meraki seems to thumb its nose at SNMP.

Plenty of other good reasons for logging as well. Having worked in environments with very mature monitoring deployments and then gone to others where it was an afterthought or was non-existent, it felt like my hands were tied. One of the environments had no real monitoring solution either, so they were really flying blind.
