Hmm... I think Spock's logical bent would make him a better Networking guy, and with how illogical Windows boxes can be I think he'd get frustrated. Chekov I think of as a bit hot-headed and easily provoked to be in IT security. I believe that most companies won't do enough about DR until AFTER they have an actual…

Depends on the goals of your current job how far you go towards 5 9's. When I worked in a 24x7x365 production environment that worked off the JIT principal, uptime was king and even getting any time to do upgrades or maintenance was a pain. My current job is much different and while keeping things up and running is…

While I do agree with that, its also about government interference in the form of regulation/taxes/etc and how much you trust the government to do the right thing. The internet has grown quite well on its own for years without much government interference and probably will do so in the future too. What will happen to…

Yes, @"HerrDoktor" is correct, NetPath requires that the traffic originate from the "start" box, that is because it requires hearing back from the routers on the path, which there is no easy way to intercept or redirect that traffic. So, the code that does the NetPath has to actually be on the box that is the start of the…

Your survey link is being blocked by US Gov't proxy's I believe. ie: at work I can't do the survey... Will try and do it at home...

Huh, and here I always thought he was this guys cousin!!

Hmm... Noticed in question 1 that "atendance" is spelled wrong! Yea, those things just leap out at me!

11/18, yesterdays colorful question...

Yea, I've had the opposite happen before in questions in this monthly cycle (I think, might have been the last). In that case one of the multiple choice answers was a right answer, but wasn't in the clue, so I made it one of my choices, but it only wanted the answers in the clue. This time I knew "data theft" was a "right…

@"racowi" You're probably right, just the man trying to keep us down!! Power to the People!! :smileyvery-happy: Ack, emoticons on this platform have a lot to be desired!!

It was good having you around! You will be missed...

Congrats! Going to vote now...

Much of that can be said for Ingress too, free play, micro-transactions (I think, never got to a point where I wanted to spend anything). No console or gaming system. I was curious and checked and they have over a million players, there was quite a bit of hype when it came out. That's a pretty decent fan-base I would…

At the very least I'd love to see current interface status. Lets say that when the SNMP scan was done to generate the "List Resources" was done, lets say Jan 1 2020, interfaces 1, 10 and 20 of 48 total interfaces are "UP". But you go in now to "List Resources" and it brings up the cached one from Jan 1 2020, it will still…

Yep, back when I worked for the government it was a huge concern and that was a couple years ago. Oddly enough now that I'm in healthcare they don't seem as concerned as I might expect them to...

Must have had too much pie yesterday!! Having a pie-hangover in Austin... Either that, or finding the right link to both the question and the hint are part of the quest to make it more challenging!! Yes, the links given above are good for both getting to the day 7 question and the hint for day 7! Thanks jemertz and…

I'm also a fan of having accounting turned on for commands issued to a device via TACACS. While RTCD is nice and will tell you what configuration changes someone did, it doesn't tell you what commands they issued on the device which accounting will. That way you can potentially go back and see what they did, or check for…

Wouldn't it be great if it recognized it was a new box, maybe via model # or serial #, and prompt to delete interfaces that no longer exist? I think I'd prefer a prompt rather than have it automatic. Of course giving the option to move stuff like bandwidth statistics from the old port to a new one would be nice too!!

As I said before, I don't agree that Cisco's command line is bad at all, I rather like it. Not to mention how easy it is to figure out a command you want. If you think Cisco's command line is tedious, try working with Fortinet's!! Worst I've seen in quite some time, which includes the old Juniper command line - ScreenOS…

Hmm.. I'm a bit confused, never got an email from Microsoft that I can tell, but did get a request to do a survey from Filip Nespor @ Solarwinds that directed me to a mspp.tns-online.com URL? So I think I did steps 1 and 3, but not step 2. I'm thinking step 2 is the important one?

You forgot Stephen Hawking. He's said that AI could be "either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity", and was also quoted as saying "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race." Diane Green of Google was also recently quoted that she does not believe that AI…

Hmm... Maybe work up some sort of agreement to pay for the design work on the architecture if hardware is not purchased from you? A reasonable hourly rate that only gets billed if the purchase is not made? Not unreasonable to expect pay for work done?

Not saying they have to do it against a single vendor, although many folks already use splunk. If they take in a flexible format that you can define somehow, it could work with anything, including their own logging products...

So, does that make it National Whining Geek day? :-)

We tend to not want to allow everyone to modify custom properties, so there the number of people that are allowed to are relatively few. However, field techs are allowed to update information on the devices themselves. Taking the information off the device expands the number of people that are allowed to update certain…

A good DBA is worth their weight in gold, one that is proactive and interested in making sure all apps work good! Hard to find though... Guessing I'll stick with networks, much more logical in how they function.
-
Agreed, when I went to college (no degree) there was really no such thing as "networking" to study. People ask me how I learned what I know and I tell them that I basically grew up with the technology and learned it on the fly. Well said!

I believe the accepted approach to accomplish this is a bit simpler. Rather than have two complete instances, instead go with the orion Fail-over-engine (FOE). That coupled with a back-end SQL failover (from whatever 3rd party works for you), you should have what you're looking for I think. Plus, by not having two active…

Increase or estimate? That is the question zennifer!!
