One important piece to keeping documentation current is to allow all employees the time to document their work properly. Many companies say that they want their employees to document processes, but what they really want is for their employees to have documented their processes. The difference is the willingness to allow…

So basically what the airlines do with overbooking then, but hopefully with more accuracy and planning. I can see how virtualization and storage management tools would be very useful for this.

Question, is this the same card sort that was posted last week? If so, I did it and it was pretty easy, and I'd encourage everyone else to do it as well. It only takes a few minutes (maybe 10). It makes me happy that Solarwinds seeks our input as customers on potential changes like this.

You spelled clubjuggle wrong. Congrats mwilder817!

1. We're unfortunately very haphazard about taking baselines. It's something we need to do regularly, and we're not. One of my "snowy August day" project ideas has been how to do this better using the tools we have. 2. Bandwidth usage, drive usage, memory, etc. 3. Varies here. Much of it is average usage, which is of…

Upvoted this but it looks like it's in the wrong place. DanielleH, maria.bungau or mrs.alterego, can you please move this to NPM feature requests so it gets more appropriate visibility?
-
Agreed. It would be really nice to be able to do a node export from the platform at the beginning of the upgrade process, which could then be imported into Upgrade Buddy.

I hadn't seen his blog before. Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.

It's not as close as it should be, though I'm not terribly surprised. We'll see what happens. Maybe Loki can go back in time and change the early votes.

It's funny that you mention interfaces. Until now, we have not been monitoring interfaces because previously, many switches were added with interfaces monitored that shouldn't have been. I spent all of last week cleaning this up, by either removing interfaces we don't particularly care about from monitoring, or by changing…

That would execute the script on a single node only, which is not what the question asked.

This is an excellent list. I would add that in addition to engineer training, end-user training is critical as well. A well-designed training program can make information security accessible and understandable, and build a culture that is supportive of security.

Where is the scripting lab? I didn't know it existed.

You're preaching to the choir on this one. I fought for this for a while, but could never get the budget money.
-
Sounds awesome. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.

In my previous comment, I don't mean to be dismissive of the idea that customer satisfaction numbers are important to ROI. Particularly in external-customer-facing support environments, satisfaction with support impacts future purchases and positive or negative word-of-mouth advertising. Internal support environments can…

Agreed. I would suspect that scans for telnet occur not because telnet is common, but because scanning is inexpensive resource-wise. If an attacker does find an open, Internet-facing telnet port, it's likely that the owner of that port likely has other major security vulnerabilities as well, making them a very easy target.…

If I may offer a slight correction: Cost of ownership of the security system must not exceed the cost of a breach. Such costs might include, but are not necessarily limited to: * The value of the information. * The cost of cost of forensics and recovery efforts. * The cost of compliance with any laws related to the breach,…

I think service accounts are by far the biggest challenge here. Two-factor authentication is not an option, so how do you best secure them? I'm open to suggestions, but don't have any good answers.

They make veggie bacon. No need to specify the bacon type on the badge. We're an inclusive bunch.

I just had an interesting conversation about this, regarding an initiative to reduce ticket counts. A coworker raised the point that in order to reduce ticket counts quickly, it may be beneficial to not care about the ticket counts for the first few months, in order to allow for a temporary surge in tickets while things…

We had to coordinate this with our circuit vendor (multi-site cloud). We have a default configuration for typical sites and tweak on a per-site basis for unique scenarios.

This won't show in your activity history; however your number of points should have increased.

A somewhat similar issue I've seen is stale DHCP reservations. A machine gets replaced, if a new reservation is given (as opposed to the old reservation being transferred), the old one isn't always removed. Also needs for reservations sometimes go away, so when a machine is replaced, the reservation, long since forgotten…

Agreed. It looks like Solarwinds was represented well and I would have loved to be there to have a conversation with you all.
-
No worries! I just want to make sure it gets the visibility it needs.

My dad's best friend is a CPA and he had one of those. Bonus points if this looks familiar:

I'm having the same error and also resubmitted multiple times before seeing this thread. Can you confirm mine was received?
-
I agree. That would be REALLY cool. Probably quite challenging to implement, but REALLY cool.

Excellent points. I'm working on a new deployment currently, and will be sure to share this.
