  • This is one of the issues we keep running into as well. I am really looking forward to the Agent/Agentless hybrid method that they are devising currently!
  • This is an awesome article! I next to never come across someone willing to talk about NUMA. A lot of VMware admins think that it is extinct, or no longer viable to our environments. I disagree completely. NUMA, and vNUMA are completely relevant. When you are trying to get every little piece of performance out of your…
  • rharland2012 Well, it does depend on the issues, as we do have some people who are good at triage of say VMware/SQL, or VMware/Exchange. Everyone here has knowledge of VMware. That is our main product line. To be more specific we have a tiering system. It goes by a different internal names but the world knows it as such.…
  • I forgot to say, I recently just started to learn Python for that very reason. Using it to build your own tools, script things, etc.
  • I only received around 1,500ish points. Can you double check mine as well! :-) Thank you very much!
  • We do not have NCM yet. I am sure we will get that in sometime soon though. I think you are completely correct though. The ability to compare, backup, set compliance levels, etc. Our needs have not changed much. We use mostly SonicWALL devices which do not seem to be supported by NCM!? yet.
  • Completed, and emailed you! Thank you very much!
  • We typically went/go by what the customer "asks" for from us. This is not always the best approach. Even seasoned veterans in the IT industry can get it incorrect when the technology is all new. When the client asks for virtualization they think money saving. This can sometimes be a misconception in my opinion. After…
  • This is an excellent write up! I completely agree with you mfmahler. I keep up on Security as a hobby. I would like to move that way someday. Staying informed, and keeping up on it is key to success in that field though, as I of course have some security friends.
  • I can agree with wbrown. I do a lot with our VMware environment, I just have not made the jump to using SAN's yet. I would really like to learn more about them. I understand basics, as I have been through EqualLogic, Compellent, and Nimble basic training, but nothing further than the basics. Thanks!
  • We serve up our own cloud environment to our clients. We have a Cloud Team, and Networking Team for those such things. I just implement the monitoring for those teams, then give them the access that they need. Done, and done. :-) I work more with external clients on monitoring their environments, etc.
  • Email sent! Hopefully I am one of the first 30! Thanks!
  • 1. I am actually a "Team Lead" of our Infrastructure Operations Services Dept. My team, and I deal with everything from backups, monitoring, proactive maintenance, to automation for the rest of the company. (and more of course.) 2. I have roughly 10 certifications(I have lost count) and am working on more. MCP/VCP/KCA to…
  • Actually I do not know what is in my network....... This is a good thing and by design
  • aLTeReGo I am running 6.2 Beta. The Trending is very nice, and trust me I have been waiting for 6.2 to become generally available.... It has some awesome features! 6.2 coupled with NPM 12 is great! Anyways I think that the forecasting will help, but still not solve our issues unfortunately. Good suggestion though! thank…
  • I completely agree! The more I have learned in Python, the more I feel I can use it to automate everything! I have been using PowerShell/PowerCLI for automation up to now. I cannot wait to start integrating some Python scripts now! I am on a programming kick. After I am more comfortable with Python, I think I will learn…
  • That is a great idea, unless said persons is not using a SAN. They may be using local storage, and/or a Physical server. I was only looking at this from a disk/virtual disk aspect. Thanks! :-)
  • ciscovoicedude I have also been following you posts. You did a very awesome job on these! A proactive best practices analyzer would be an amazing addition. So for example, as you type in the changes you are about to make it can tell you immediately if that will take you out of compliance, or break something. Even it it…
  • Agents would be excellent. We can really use those since we have so many overlapping subnets, and laptops that we monitor. We cannot wait!
  • Very good article. Definitely some good points to consider! Thank you very much!
  • I have used several different platforms in the past from VNC, LogMeIn, join.me, WebEx, to Dameware, and Bomgar. Personally I think they all have their place. I liked LogMeIn, Damware, and Bomgar the most. I really, really like Bomgar for ease of use, features, and how secure it is compared to the others. Bomgar does come…
  • Over/under allocation of VM's used to be one of my worst enemies. It forced me to learn esxtop really quickly since I work with primarily VMware. I think you hit the nail on the head. CPU contention, over/under allocation of resources, storage bottlenecks, network adapters, vSwitch config, and networking issues. Also, not…
  • I am really excited about the DPI product that is coming soon from SolarWinds. I think this piece has been missing from a monitoring perspective. DPI has many uses, all very well described by glenkemp. The many uses would include using this to detect issues/malware/etc, or settings off network/application performance…
  • michael stump I would absolutely agree. The side of business I work in, there is no way to be siloed. Honestly the array of different technologies that land on my plate range from Exchange, VMware, SolarWinds, Kaseya, SANs, to creating processes, Automating tasks, broken printers, update approvals, broken backups, etc. The…
  • I will look into that solution. We would prefer SolarWinds to have this ability so everything is under one solution. Thank you very much for the suggestion! :-)
  • Excellent write-up. I really liked it. I feel we would use NCM if it worked for SonicWALLS. We have other equipment, but we primarily have those...........
  • Excellent post. You are absolutely correct on the infrastructure point of view. Typically they start with does it have a TB of RAM? If not then there is not enough RAM. Adding too many Processors can also be a net negative. This can actually degrade your performance in the virtual world. Giving that server more shares,…
  • Back to when I was a Helpdesk intern for a hospital. Another desktop guy received a call regarding a mouse not working for a particular employee. Asked me to replace her mouse, even though he had just replaced it a few days prior. "No problem". I grabbed a mouse, and headed up stairs. The user was not there, but I was…
  • We use NetFlow currently against an F5, and some other devices. It was wonderful when one of our clients was using BitTorrent to download a popular television show. We were alerted of the incident from our ISP. We were very easily able to track that user down showing exactly what time they used BitTorrent, and from which…
  • Where I work we use both. For our hosted infrastructure, unless our client pays for something else we use Storage based. Non-hosted clients again, depends on what they pay for but we have some clients that are using both. With the Nimble's the space usage is pretty minimal compared to other Storage. So, that mixed with…
