well other devices in the same solarwind server subnet can contact the smtp mail server so i guess that rules out the routing issue? also i can ping the smtp mail server from my solarwind server

you are saying it is "preferable" to create an e-mail account for alerts , so it is possible to set up email alerts without setting a "from" email for solarwind??? and if so how can i set up authentication for the smtp if there is no email for solarwind in that case ? im confused about the authentication thing ?

but from my workstation computer i can telnet on port 25 without TLS or authentication? could the solarwind server need something to be enabled to log in smtp? bear in mind the telnet is working on the solarwind server and i can telnet other devices?

this is for solarwind? also which database do i choose to backup? because i have SAM , NPM , NETFLOW and others ?
