Any suggestions, information, or tips on this would be very helpful. As we are going through the implementation process for both Orion NPM and NCM, having to give all of my NCM users Customize Views Permissions access is a bit annoying because then they will want to customize views not realizing it changes that view for…

Just over two years ago I was in the same position you are in now pitching Orion as our next generation monitoring solution to our Executive Staff and I have also done training for other companies. Aside from the technical details, I would focus on the following items... * Orion provides a single pane of glass that can…

Kellie, I have sent you some of our dashboards and some information about them; hope it helps!

This looks like it should work to me; however, I always suggest you test anything before putting it into production.

Colly I have also been working with network monitoring software for some time now and have always enjoyed the concept of event correlation. However, in my experience all of the products that claim to have that capability never seem to deliver on it very well... at least not without a bunch of manual configurations that…

Hi Thwack Users, I'm sure this has been asked before so my apologies. I'd like to configure an alert that triggers only for a specific piece of equipment. For example, I have a number of critical switches that I'd like to receive alerts on should a port go down. As I understand the process now, alerts are global for…

Which serial number are you referring to? Are you collecting it with a UnDP or is it some place in the Orion UI that you are seeing it? If you can tell me how it's being collected I can point you to it in the DB. Keep in mind that the way it's stored in the DB is not necessarily straight forward from a query standpoint.…

Currently you are not able to create your own tabs. What you could do is create a list of links on a single page that link to you reports though the "Reports" menu item pretty much does this already. Alternatively you could create a single view that has all of your reports displayed on it. Hope this helps!

We have successfully moved to v10 and the move went very smoothy! We use NPM and APM and have both an additional poller and two additional web servers. Instead of upgrading we did a fresh install of Windows 2008R2 and installed Orion v10 on that system and connected it to the existing database. Also, in this process the…

In large installations this can indicate that your scheduler is overloaded. I have also seen this happen as a result of one or two component monitors not working properly causing a chain reaction since the APM polling is done in serial, not parallel. If you don't think that your scheduler should be overloaded try going…

I am still looking to get a better idea of how to determine capacity on a polling engine specifically regarding APM? There are no numbers to show polls per second or anything like that for APM so I feel like I am "flying blind". Does anybody have any pointers on how to determine the health and capacity of APM polling?

Do you have the hardware monitoring on the system that shows the health of the raid controller and the battery? If not you will need to go to the node, click on the "List Resources" button and select the hardware monitoring option. Funny thing, we had the same failure this week on an HP and with the hardware monitoring in…

Orion APM is very Windows centric as it supports both WMI as well as Power Shell scripts. I have never used APM as a standalone (that was only very recently made possible) but if you are suggesting that it's network centric is it possible that you are using Orion NPM? What I can tell you is that all of the things you are…

I also think it would be very useful to be albe to set a threshold line on the graphs created with the UnDP. Is there currently a feature request for this?

So as this topic has caused me to look even deeper into the world of network forensics I started looking at network recording solutions that capture every packet that flows across the network. Besides the details of the packet itself what would you loose by using LEM to capture firewall and router logs with logging turned…

Well, since I had suggested this I guess it appropriate for me to be one of the first people to comment. I actually have a lot of comments swirling around in my head regarding this so I will do my best to get them out in a coherent manner. I recently watched a webinar from a FIM vendor where it was shown how the malware…

You should be able to have the Cisco devices send all logs to the Syslog facility on your system. One of these log types should be login and configuration changes. Once you have these you can both alert on them real time as well as run reports against them. Are you working with just NCM or do you also have NPM?

The Orion Agent works great for this. I have several systems in Azure now that we are monitoring with the agent and it works great.

I love the new installer but I also had the same question about it.

I had the same problem with the date returning a "?", not sure why this is becaue when I grab that data with an snmpwalk or snmpget from a Linux system it works just fine. I am guessing it's a formatting issue. As far as polled software is concerned, I uploaded both a poller as well as a SQL query that should capture that…

There is a Blog about this HERE.

Have you tried creating a Summary View with a Multiple-Object Chart? If you do this you can specify only the volumes that you want and have them all in a single line chart that you can watch over time. Hope this helps!

Jeremy Just out of curiosity; do you have plans to do this type of hardware level monitoring on boxes running ESXi where this information is not available via SNMP? For my company this is the larger problem; very specifically the ability to see failed drives.

I think I may have opened a feature request for this a while back but I am happy to sign up for it again. I hate having to rely on people properly filling out free-form fields as many of our alerts rely on the Custom Properties being filled out properly.
-
Firstly, do you actually have the data-collection for this setup with the Universal Device Poller (UnDP)? Secondly, why not simplify the alert by calling out the poller by name in the alert?

For those of you experiencing problems and have tried reindexing your database; here are the SQL commands that SolarWinds provided me that I have been using to maintain my database and they have been working extremely well. The first 3 will delete all Syslog and Traps to help speed up the following commands so if you…

Having fast hardware and storage throughput is also part of our strategy as many others have also suggested. We also use a separate dedicated web server and also try not to overload the platform system by offloading more polling to dedicated polling engines. Syslog and traps can also kill your system, I am sure to keep a…

I was under the impression that creating custom tabs wasn't currently possible, how were you able to create your own tab?

I was most recently told to use the SNMP Statistic Polling index number since that takes UnDP's into consideration as well, so in this case your number would be 3405. However, it does make sense to me that you would add it to the Status Index number. It would be nice to get clarification on that. Ultimately none of it is…

Message Center does this minus the customizable refresh; however, you can probably find a browser plugin that can do that.
