Is the plan going forward to slowly deprecate Profiler and move to SRM?
-
Jfrazier you are absolutely correct; that is the problem we have ran into as well. To pull our data-center environmental data into Orion we had to write our own middle ware using a series of custom code SAM applications that collect the data from the data-center system and pulls it into Orion.

Yeah the idea here was to capture all of that. Sent from my iPhone

When most people think of cloud they think of hyper-scalers such as Azure, Google and Amazon; however, those are not a one-top-shop solution and you still really need to know what you are doing to leverage those. We are a hosting provider and we specialize in designing, building and supporting hybrid environments targeted…

Like anything it really all comes down to your use case. Cloud is a relatively nebulous term; however, I think there are likely good cloud solutions for most use cases. Ultimately it's more of an issue of identifying the correct cloud solution. This is one of the reasons why hybrid clouds are growing, they address a wider…

We will bring it into our lab and start working with it to get a better understanding of it and how to manage it; however, we won't roll it out to production until we feel it's ready. All of our management applications such as Patching, Anti-Virus, Monitoring, etc. all need to support the OS before we can roll it into…

Thanks! I actually did look before I submitted that and didn't find anything.

Compliance is definitely important and it's quickly becoming a huge impact on our industry. It's important to realize that if you are going to go down the compliance road no matter which compliance requirements you are talking about, it's important to get corporate buy-in from the top level. I say this because it's going…

In line with your concept of Proactive Fault Prevention, I would like to see some anomaly detection. Having network devices that auto-baselined and then tracked dozens of different metrics real-time within the device itself and reported out when anomalies were detected would be awesome.

Another thing to keep in mind is that backups often first go to very fast storage and then are spooled off to slower storage over time. When you do the restore you then need to call that data back from the slower storage which also slows down the process.

Our PCI Auditor is looking for these exact logs so I need a way to get them into LEM.
-
I think it's interesting seeing the same principals applied to these very different networks with very different use cases. I guess at the end of the day it call comes back to the basics.

Wow, Dez, so after reading this I am really confused on where you stand with regards to patching, pro or con? Sadly I tend to agree with sparda963 on the disconnect between the folks in the trenches and the execs. As a service provider we build and manage environments for a lot of different clients and while we try to…

I have to imagine it's only a matter of time before this becomes a common expectation of regulatory and compliance requirements.
-
Yes, it would absolutely awesome as I create filters to test in the monitoring section as well to determine how I need it to look and then when I get it working like I want it needs to be turned into a rule.

Where I work we are all expected to have one or two disciplines we are specialized in; however, we are all also expected to have a general understanding of all of the other disciplines. We are organized into pod's where each pod as a person specialized in each discipline. With this type of organization when a new project…

The Amazon and VMWare partnership was a power play to try and get ahead of what Microsoft is building with Azure Stack. It's unfortunate MS wasn't a bit faster with their new Azure Stack but after having seen some of it very early on I am really excited for it. Microsoft has a very complete vision of the direction for…

We are a hybrid cloud service provider and when customers have log management and/or compliance requirements we implement a SW LEM appliance in their hybrid environment. With this hybrid approach we have a dedicated appliance using storage that allows our customers to always know where there data is being stored. In cases…

Done. I really liked having screenshots of different charts where we could pick the one we thought was most in need of updates.

Not sure why this hasn't been implemented yet, seems like it would be rather simple to do and would provide a huge benefit and make Groups much more valuable.
-
techbender I was pointing out "that doesn't seem like the case" because I didn't see a way that I would be able to post a Blog into this space; I had originally thought based on the description of this space that I would be able to do so; that's all. I wasn't questioning SolarWinds willingness to take criticism or be…

I love that there are others out there that see the value and skills that are developed by playing D&D as well as other like games. It gets kids away from video games and into something that requires real problem solving and imagination. I loved AD&D 2nd Edition as a kid and (at risk of revealing what a true geek I am) I…

All of this additional data and the additional complexities combined with increased expectations of the monitoring system (better reports, better dashboards, more accurate alerts, etc.) has almost created a requirement to have a dedicated resource for managing the monitoring system. I know for our environment I could…

Well, it seems reasonable that if you could setup the predefined task you could then also have the ability to run it on demand versus having a schedule assigned to it.

I find it interesting that so many people move to Public Cloud solutions thinking they are going to save $$$ when very often that isn't the case at all; at least not if you want good performance out of the systems. We are a Cloud Solutions Provider and we offer everything from Colocation space, Private Cloud, Public Cloud…

While I think PerfStack is great for helping with this problem, the other important piece is documenting the troubleshooting that has been done and for this I suggest a solid ticketing system such as WebHelpDesk. Having each person involved in an issue documenting their thoughts and the things that they tried is really…

We have also been using Fortinet and I would have to agree with cnorborg and tinmann0715 that the Fortinet is a challenge to work with for several different reasons. We have found it be a buggy platform that claims to do a lot but often has issues with with many of the advertised functions. At this point we are looking…

Unfortunately I don't get to travel much so I have to live vicariously through others that do. My big travel even this year was going to SolarWinds in Austin for ThwackCamp which was super amazing. I am really glad you had such an awesome trip!

Automation is certainly a game changer; however, I once had a wise person tell me that you can't have automation until you first have standardization. I have found this to be a 100% accurate statement, unfortunately I have watched as several folks have jumped onto the automation bandwagon without first taking the time to…

Wow, yeah, I can speak from some traumatic experience on this one. We had a critical failure that required us to restore from data that was located in a different data-center in a different state. It was only then that we came to realize in the worst way possible that the network wasn't cut out for doing major restores.…
