Big Data can apply to so many different things that it makes this question a bit difficult to answer. It seems that when people talk about big data it's not uncommon to them immediately think you are just talking about Hadoop. I have been working on learning new SIEM technologies which some might say deal with Big Data. I…

We are a service provider and offer several different storage solutions which includes a Flash based option. For managing these systems we primarily use the vendor specific tools and aggregate the alerts to our SolarWinds based monitoring infrastructure. Unfortunately the "one tool to rule them all" doesn't really exist…

I have found that troubleshooting takes a specific mindset that not everybody has. The first and possibly most important step is to not approach the problem assuming you know the answer because this obscures your ability to see other possibilities.

Yeah, but I want more detailed information about the entire stack which can only be collected via the API.

sqlrockstar with regard to your statement on the Facebook article "they haven’t exactly demonstrated that they can be trusted with our data" I guess I would ask who can we trust with our data? More importantly, how can we tell who we can trust with our data? Just thinking out loud here now but I feel like there is…

So if you are managing a noSQL database does that make you a noDBA?

I would love to see Orion incorporate some machine learning and be able to tell me about things that I may not have thought to write a specific alert for.

But let's not forget the original source of the problem. rschroeder You make a fantastic point here! This reminds me of my early days of working in the NOC. One morning I came in and the guy I was taking over the shift for told me he had a really busy night. When I asked what had kept him so busy he told me that this…

We use the Account Limitation model which does properly restrict viewing of the nodes on the map; however, you can still see the background image which is often a network topology or something of that nature. Currently we assign each customer a CustomerID number which functions as their login name to Orion. We also have a…

We are working with SD WAN from different vendors in our lab. While the new infrastructure we are rolling out is cutting edge, we do try and avoid the bleeding, or at least keep it contained to the lab.

Jfrazier I like your automation approach to looking at naming conventions. I recently proposed here that we move away from our standard naming convention wherein each different device type begins with 3 letters representing that device type and instead move to something more like a serial number. The argument was that…

The cloud backup article really stood out to me as one of the services we provide is setting up and managing backup to Azure for our clients. The Cloud based backup solutions have really come a long way and are a great option for many of our clients. For anybody that has been on the fence about this, I would strongly…

Thanks ecklerwr1! This community is so awesome, it's almost like my extended set of co-workers since we are in the virtual trenches together so often.

Also in the vein of security, having some type of Log Management and Change Detection to be able to identify undesired types of activity associated with both the front-end web application and the database.

The biggest thing I struggle with is having folks here understand that monitoring needs to be deliberate. You can't just add a node to the system and be done. Monitoring needs to be deliberately configured based on the environment and what you want to know about it. I understand that approach is time consuming but…

Think creatively about how to use the technology you already have I think this is also a great though. I have seen countless occasions where folks in IT were looking to purchase or implement new tools to solve a problem when we already had tools in place that could solve the problem, they just weren't thinking about the…

Totally jealous of you being at Ignite; hope you have an awesome time there!

A group of us that I work with just started a Script Club where we are all learning PowerShell together, much like a book club. Each week we read a chapter in the book on our own, do the labs and then get together for our lunch hour and discuss. Maybe this is something you could try to do at your company?

I sometimes feel like folks have over complicated this idea of Hybrid cloud. I understand that is is more complex and does introduce new challenges but that doesn't mean it needs to be this big scary beast that folks seem to make it out to be. For organizations thinking about moving in a hybrid direction; start off small…
-
As a service provider a majority of the clients we see ultimately end up with a hybrid solution. The main focus of our road-map going forward is to extend and advance our hybrid capabilities since it's where we see the most interest.

That's awesome! Let her know I want to pre-order!

I thought with a more recent release of Network Atlas it was supposed to start using L3 connection information as well as the L2 that it was previously using for Connect Now? I know that NPM does topology discovery which is what used by Connect Now, since NPM is a Network Monitoring tool it doesn't seem like a stretch of…

I am happy to try it out once I can get an RC, unfortunately I can't upgrade my production systems to RC software.

Great story and great pictures, thanks for sharing! One question I would be interested in, aside from the questions about Python support (and of course "monitoring"); is there any one thing that you find folks coming to the SolarWinds boot are more interested in above others?

We have always had a great relationship with our auditors and run a pretty tight ship where compliance is concerned. We also typically manage to a tighter level of controls than HIPAA specifies so this likely won't be an issue for us.
-
I love the disclaimer and sadly I would agree with the advice as well.
-
Thanks sharing! I tend to agree that often things like hyper connectivity gets labeled as "required" when it really isn't. There is certainly a balance to be had.

Part of me has to wonder if Google is becoming a less relevant company? I realize they are still huge and won't be going away anytime in the near future but they no longer really seem to have the edge on anything as far as actual technical capabilities are concerned and I am not sure they are providing anything useful to…

I always see a lot of focus on the traffic coming IN to your network but it's just as important (if not more important) to watch the traffic going OUT of your network and specifically where it's going.

I actually had to setup IPSLA in Orion NPM back before they had a product that did it all for you and still have it running now. It takes a lot of Universal Pollers and calculated values, etc. Their new tool does a wonderful job and makes it all so much easier.
