c1ph3r_qu33n_3 it was an amazing experience getting to talk with you and be a part of this panel!

Historically I had been a big fan of Gartner; I loved the Magic Quadrant reports specifically the details written in them. These days I find myself questioning more and more if there is any logic at all behind where products are placed in the Magic Quadrant. I also can't help but notice the best products are always from…

We are in the process of making the move to flash storage for pretty much all production workloads. It still makes a lot of sense to have large spindle based systems for any type of archiving.

Being that we are partnered with Microsoft and are a Microsoft/Azure shop I love seeing all of the positive news about Microsoft these days. It's such a different company than it used to be. I remember the days when you didn't want to admit to being a Windows Admin, times have definitely changed and Microsoft is on top of…

Using the NMS is not my full time job; however, I am the primary person responsible for managing it. I manage all of our management and monitoring tools most of which come from SolarWinds. While I do appreciate these tools are designed to not be overly complicated; I do wish management had a better understanding of what it…

We have different log retentions for different customers. We will generally follow what ever the customer requests and/or what is dictated by any compliance requirements that the customer needs to comply with.

I have horrible test anxiety and have a terrible memory so I find I am terrible at taking tests unless I really truly know the material inside and out. This is a terrible situation to be in working in an industry that expects you to have ton's of certifications. If anybody out there has been in my situation and has found a…

That is where i would put it.

Application Performance can be very subjective. Much like others have already mentioned, we use baselines to determine if the performance is good enough. When a client tells us an application is "slow" we compare the performance at the time it was slow to the performance at times it wasn't slow and see what the delta is…

What I would love to see is some good reference architecture for a good security implementation. I would imagine this reference architecture showing the different components as being associated with different maturity levels all the way up to a DoD level of security. If anybody has seen or knows of anything like this I…

JfrazierI totally agree with you on this as I do many things. I have pointed out in several places now that it seems our industry is being flooded with all of these seemingly new terms and ideas that in reality are just re-branded concepts and technologies that have been around for years.

I just recently spoke with the new Product Manager for WPM and he couldn't even give me a straight answer to that question. Based on my conversation with him and reading between the lines (listening to what wasn't said and the questions he couldn't answer) I am guessing that WPM will not likely continue to exist in it's…

Jfrazier Oh I totally agree; however, you would be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) at how often people don't see the difference and think that because they have one that they also have the other. It's only when things fail that they find out which ones (if any) that they really have.

As am example of what I am looking for, you can take a look at what ScienceLogic has done HERE. We desperately need this type of functionality, some folks here have already started looking at other monitoring solutions to fill this gap and I would prefer to just stick with SolarWinds.

Jiri Cvachovec I took a look at the upgrade document and it looks like it can take a good deal of time for the data migration. Is there any way that the data migration can be done before the upgrade so that you can then have a specific planned maintenance for the upgrade bit? I ask because I need to specifically schedule…

ecklerwr1 yeah, as far as I can tell it's really less about what you know and more about your ability and willingness to learn new things. Just because you have been stuck doing the same thing for a long period of time doesn't typically exclude you from other opportunities so long as you are willing and able!

After having worked with several companies in the health care industry, it's scary to see what their back-end infrastructure looks like and how disorganized they are at managing it. To make it even more difficult their teams are typically silos that either don't work or don't work well with each other. When you mention…

Thanks for taking the time to put this together sqlrockstar, it's a great article! The piece I really struggle with at times is Govern. I find that I often have other people that get excited about monitoring and want to get their hands into the monitoring system to make changes but don't understand the potential impacts…

I love seeing how SolarWinds does such a great job of integrating with other mainstream products out there.

Is there ever a time when WordPress isn't vulnerable?

Optimizing a virtual environment can be a real challenge. Each hypervisor, network arrangement, storage system, etc has it's own set of requirements and tweaks necessary for optimization as well. It's important to have specialized skillets in each of those areas as part of an overall team to maximize the efficiency of your…

Well, either way I am cautiously optimistic!

ecklerwr1 that graphic is totally awesome... sad but awesome!

Also understanding how you plan to manage and monitor those services becomes important as well. My advise to any company planning to move a lot of systems and services to the cloud would be to partner with a company with experience that can assist and advise you throughout the process.

So, in the chart that uses UTC, we basically jump from 9:00 UTC (UTC -7) to 10:00 UTC (UTC -8) at time change leaving a gap of data, or time stamps with no data. In the case of the chart that uses local time, it looks like it probably just re-wrote the data for 2:00AM - 3:00AM when the clocks rolled back. Does that all…

I think this is a great list. To extend the conversation I think it would be awesome to see these types of security practices categorized by difficulty to implement versus value/impact. Doing something like that would provide a great road-map for companies to start withing and I would see such a model building on itself.

we’ve now hit a point in time where we create logos for security vulnerabilities I have to think that future us is going to look back at current us as though there was something seriously wrong with us.

Jfrazier great point on the statistics!
