LOL, when I read this I couldn't help but picture an ammo crate that would automatically order more ammo when it gets low... probably from Amazon.

I really like the additional info provided on who these certifications are best suited for; thanks for taking the time to write this up!

With regard to the Education Data, it almost makes me wonder if we need to shift to a model where those types of institutions or businesses begin to rely more on 3rd party certified secure vendors to manage and protect their data. Managing data is not in the wheel house of Education institutions so why are they doing it in…

ecklerwr1 I would have to agree with you on this bit. However, we are working toward doing what mrlesmithjr suggests for VM's and entire infrastructures on a Hybrid Cloud Platform. We have already been able to manually do it, now it's just a matter of the automation bits.

Yeah, I definitely 2nd what Jfrazier says about the complexity today. 15 yeas ago when I started working with HP OpenView we had just a small handful of physical servers with only one application per server which was connected to a switch and then a few routers and that was about it. Now I need a map to find any one…

If you don't mind sharing, what bits of information did you specifically glean value from? I ask because Log Management and SIEM deployments can be really hit and miss so I am always interested to see the specific points where people are gaining value.

I think it is a concern; however, I would like to have it as an option for the situations where the benefit outweighs the concerns.

You can find those notes from the tech in my Case #1154511

I think it's awesome if people are getting busted for crimes (tax fraud or any other) after bragging about it on social media. That's just getting what you deserve in my book!
-
Done. Always happy to help SolarWinds get the recognition they deserve!

Not sure what you mean by having bulked-up NPM but I till take a stab at your question. LEM is a great product but it has one severe limitation, if there isn't a connector for it then it can't ingest the data. With that in mind there are often times data that you may need to collect and store and that is one use case where…

Those hard drives reminded me: We have clients that have very high levels of security that mandate we destroy any hard drives that have contained data of theirs when they fail. We store these in a cabinet and once every few months a company comes by with a truck that has a big piston that crushes the drives. It's every…

My biggest challenge is folks that have decided they don't want to use the tools that the rest of us use so they bring in their own tools creating sprawl, silos, data inconsistencies and a supportability issue since nobody else knows or can support their tools.

HERE is a really good article on how it all came to be.

In looking at these threads I guess I should be leery of purchasing this product, from the sounds of things SolarWinds isn't very committed to it which would suggest that there aren't many customers paying for it; though that is just a guess. It might make sense to have this product wrapped up into SAM since it's inline…

ecklerwr1 I would be curious to know why you are bothering to send your syslogs from Orion at all if you have them in Splunk? Aside from the correlation that adatole mentioned, I don't see where there would be a ton of value considering the additional load and performance burden you are putting on Orion. While I don't…

Another challenge that comes up in compliance environments where logging is required is being able to control who has access to the logs and being able to show an audit trail of when they logged in to look at them.
-
ecklerwr1 I agree with you on this. I just look at it as one less thing I need to worry about.

I think one of the biggest problems with InfoSec is that companies approach it as a problem that needs to be solved with technology when it's really a problem that needs to be solved with people. Having good tools in place is an absolute must but at the end of the say the tool only provides 20% of the solution, your people…

Training users only goes so far. We also need to do everything possible to "stupid proof" our environments so people can't do things that would jeopardize security. Controlling/limiting/disabling USB drives is a great example of this.

This focuses on the Federal sector but I think it applies pretty universally.

I am really glad that you noted EQ! Studies have found that people with high EQ will generally be more successful than people with high IQ.

To me this whole discussion comes down to one question; is it the company that expecting you to BYOD or is it the employee that is expecting to be able to BYOD? If it's the employee that is expecting to BYOD then they should be willing to comply with any requirements the company has on such things. If it's the company that…

When I read this the first thing that came to mind was change management and change tracking. I have to wonder when those types of failures and magical restoration of services occur how much was the result of undocumented changes being made. Most issues are caused by unanticipated consequences of changes made by people.

We have actually moved away from using Orion for log management due to the specific problems you note here. I would love to be able to better utilize LEM for that but it also lacks data warehouse functionality and it also lacks a general connector to allow me to choose what logs I receive, instead I am bound by what…

While I totally agree that PerfStack will certainly help cross-team troubleshooting, I could argue that at the end of the day we need teams to function better together. Maybe the root of the problem is we are structuring our teams wrong to begin with? If we build teams based on discipline (networking, systems, storage,…

Awesome, thanks DanielleH!

This doesn't at all feel like an advertisement for NetPath. With that being said, it certainly is funny how so many things in our industry change and evolve quickly while at the same time there are other tools that seem stuck in time. Traceroute is one of those tools that while certainly no longer optimal it doesn't get…

I am certainly sympathetic to the licensing issue and I have had several conversations with SolarWinds folks about that. At the end of the day licensing should never get in the way of good technology being properly leveraged, if it is you have done something wrong. As I have expressed to the other folks at SW that I have…

RomeoG I would love to hear what your Splunk roll-out process looked like from the time you purchased the product until the time you started receiving value from it. I haven't spent a lot of time with it which is why I am curious. Also, did you use any professional services or was the project all done in house?
