Great article; we are doing most of things and will be doing all of them soon. I agree with Jfrazier in that the documentation is a must. Documentation showing both how it's setup and how you are meeting those different requirements.

They now update automatically if you have AT installed on them so this is basically implemented now.

Monitoring components in the cloud is certainly the new frontier in the monitoring world. The catch is most companies won't be going "all in" with the cloud; most will be going with a hybrid approach. Because of this the classic monitoring tools will need to adapt to also support cloud based components and then provide…

designerfx while I think Kiwi is a good product, I don't think it's a replacement for the Orion syslog functionality... not yet anyway. SolarWinds will tell you to use Kiwi in conjunction with Orion to augment it; however, I think they are essentially using Kiwi as a crutch to support the fact that the Orion Syslog…

Ok, so SW needs to have their own set of dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 & d20) dice set in the Thwack store where the 1 is replaced by the SW symbol. Of course it would need to include a SW orange bag with the SW logo on it as well!

What problems do you run into when trying to backup and/or restore TB's of data?

Patching Linux is a struggle. This struggle is magnified when you are running multiple distros and many different environments with different requirements. Manual patching is out of the question due to sheer volume of systems. There are a few products out there that can help with this such as Puppet. I would be really…

rschroeder sorry to see you have had such a poor experience 0365, we use 0365 extensively and have not had any outages that immediately come to mind. When you are seeing those issues in NetPath are users also not able to access those resources?
-
I am still stunned that there are that many people still using such an old version of SQL and haven't bothered to patching it after so many years! Seriously, take some pride in your computing environment!
-
As it turns out they are actually working on an agent for SAM now!
-
Nice article jhynds! While I can totally sympathize with the different groups and agencies that have to do this without additional funding or resources; what I can say after having worked with different government agencies is that they don't seem to be very efficient. It seems they may be able to find the additional…

zackm what does your typical LEM engagement look like? What specific things help your clients receive the most value from the product?
-
OMG, that is awesome! Thanks so much! My wife is totally going to hate me, when I told her was trying to win it she gave me a dirty look and asked me where I thought I was going to put it. LOL. I totally have a place already ready for it!

If that is an image that sums up where we are at "living on our own" then I think we are clearly a broke college student living in a bachelor pad.

It's long overdue that the custom properties for IPAM be brought up to the standards of the other Orion components.
-
Hard to believe this hasn't been implemented yet; why have the Groups mechanism if you can't generate alerts based on them.
-
I think some set of universal custom properties would be awesome!
-
It also seems that limitations are all based on a Node level. What I mean is that you can't give somebody access to see an object associated with a node such as a volume or interface if they don't also have the ability to also see that entire node.
-
familyofcrowes Oh, I don't disagree, though I think integrating the two should be a relatively simple task.
-
Jfrazier We had to solve this problem our selves since we have to manage and comply with multiple different compliance requirements including HIPAA and PCI. Our SO created a generic spreadsheet document that lists all of our different controls and then maps each of the controls do the different compliance controls. So one…
-
We are also an MSP so I completely understand your challenges here. If you could assign custom properties to a group and then put all of the nodes associated with a customer in that group, would that work? I think something like that would potentially work well for us.

I have moved to the conclusion that the Syslog and Trap receiver are not and never intend to be a functional part of Orion for anything beyond very small environments and am forwarding that information on to my VP of Operations and Engineering. I am working on moving to another solution for that, hopefully LEM.

InfoSec is a new discipline for me so it has been a great experience following your posts and reading this final set of pointers so I want to thank you for that. I have found InfoSec to be a very fascinating discipline; however, at the same time I have also found it very difficult to approach. InfoSec has an entry level…

Unless they are those small little cupcakes, then you might be able to get a full dozen in there!

My logic about the 1 was more centered around the idea that is where the logo on dice is normally put because they all have a 1. At the end of the day the important take-away here is that SW needs an official dice set!
-
I have found that Orion actually scales pretty well. My biggest problem has been that I have to pay for additional polling engines versus a per-node model. I understand something like this is available now but I haven't had a chance to look into if it makes sense considering how invested we already are in the model that we…

I have a Feature Request for this HERE with some specific ideas on improvements.

Exactly!

Great post! I think the big take-away's for me here are "focus on how it will benefit your manager (or the person you are needing to convince)" and "don't overdo it, keep it to the point". All too often I have seen presentations that go in way too many directions and the ultimate point is completely lost, that will…
