I will Bump your Bump and raise you a Bump!

LOL, I am not sure I would use WMI as an example of a good protocol. It's certainly feature rich; however, it's performance certainly leaves something to be desired. It doesn't help that each new release of Windows it manages to actually get slower.

I totally agree with rschroeder on this in that we have plenty of applications available for this type of thing, it's the training that is lacking. Managing a good SIEM system takes a lot of work and a good deal of understanding and there isn't a ton of great resources out there for this.

An application used to be a single installed thing, now an application is often made up of many different components spread across different geographical regions. To monitor this new breed of application I have had some success with out clients by monitoring all of the different components of the application (storage,…

Does your organization have an IoT strategy? Not specifically, we work through each item individually as it comes up. Right now the big ones are roaming laptops and cell phones which is probably the biggest one for most companies. How many IoT devices do you manage? Roughly around 100 if you count laptops and cell phones.…

While I think Step 4 is great, it can also be a problem. Years ago we had a monitoring system that had remediation scripts linked to the alerts (something I wish Orion had or at least did a better job of), this way when a tech saw an alert come in they could click on the remediate button and it would run the script and fix…

I think some of these new emerging technologies are great but I can't help but look back at some of the older and more mature security solutions available that are still not getting used. Take for example 2F Authentication, this SHOULD be a standard for everything at this point but it isn't. Most companies are still…

I am really looking forward to the up-coming topics on this. I certainly hope they are focused on doing these things using Orion and/or other SolarWinds tools; it's going to be a little awkward if you show us how to do these things using Nagios or OpenView.

The whole Net Neutrality being repealed thing is gut wrenching. This is what happens when you leave politicians in charge of making technical impacting decisions for which they have no clue of the consequences. As far as Uber is concerned, I think they have been a slime-ball bully of a company from the beginning and I…

Awesome, thanks!

We use a combination of CommVault and Microsoft Azure Site Recovery (ASR) and have had great experiences with both.

Log Management and SIEM is near and dear to my heart! We have been using SolarWinds LEM since shortly after SolarWinds acquired the product and I still feel like I am just scratching the surface of the potential value and capabilities. As we have rolled it out to more and more systems I find it more common for my team to…

As I just mentioned in a different post, I work for a hybrid cloud solutions provider so I am probably a bit biased on this but I truly do think that a hybrid approach provides the flexibility to meet just about any need. It's also worth noting that we use SolarWinds solutions for monitoring all of our hybrid solutions…

Employees are both a companies most costly resource as well as it's most valuable resource. If a company isn't willing to invest in you then you are probably wasting your time investing in them.

Without submitting an opinion on the topic, I have to wonder if it's something that private industry would sort out on it's own? In this case I would compare it to the cellular companies and unlimited minutes; once one company started offering this it was only a matter of time before they were all offering it. It will only…

We are an ISP/MSP and we have seen many of these changes coming as well and have done what we can to prepare for them. One of the things I always find myself conflicted on is the idea of buying into a vendor ecosystem, is it better to go all in with one or a few vendors for this stuff or is it better to diversify and not…

I haven't tried EOC but I have heard similiar concerns from other folks that use it. I am fortunate enough to have not scaled beyond a single Orion deployment. My scalability has mostly just been geographical (including public cloud) and into different isolated network segments. Hopefully by the time I scale beyond a…

I feel like we need some type of consumer watch dog group that highlights these deficiencies and classifies these products (Good, Warning - Use with caution, Bad - completely insecure) or something like that. The same group could provide basic how-to's that an average person could follow on how to do things correctly. Just…

Yeah, it's somewhat disappointing that this is still an issue. It seems like it would be an easy thing to improve that would result in a significant improvement in user experience.

Ugg, the age old naming convention conversation. Every time it comes up it seems to become a holy war. I have never understood why people in this industry are so passionate about having specific naming conventions. As long as it works that's all that matters, am I missing something there?

I think most dashboards are not particularly useful but that isn't to say they can't be. The trick to a good dashboard is to provide important data about what is going on in a way that is simple and easy to consume.
-
No kidding. Our company just recently launched an R&D initiative and they keep wondering why the folks on my team aren't showing a high level of participation; I guess they think magic and fairy dust keeps things up and running.
-
I agree, it seems odd that the answer is clearly stated but when selected is wrong; however, there may be a good explanation.

Great article networkingnerd! It almost feels like there is an untaped market here. On P1 incidents most if not all of my team ends up working to resolve the issue which makes the challenge of tracking the changes being made even more difficult as there are a lot of people involved. It seems like this would be a good…

I am always blown away by the level of community engagement by SolarWinds; nice job guys!

Good question jaimeaux! Anomaly based detection is becoming more and more important as keeping up with signatures is slow, workload intensive and keeps you always one step behind the zero day threats. I personally want to see more evolution in anomaly based detection for everything monitoring related.

After working nearly all night last night (unexpectedly) due to a back-end storage system filing up and taking down an entire virtual environment (including Orion) I would love to have some normal! I point this out because if somebody would have setup the monitoring properly we would have seen the storage filling up, the…
-
ecklerwr1 don't you have the tools necessary to show the growth and anticipated fill date to the folks with the $$$ so they are purchasing storage in advance? Also I am sure when things fill up and cause problems there is an unnecessary cost associated with that you could show to help them understand they are saving money…

This got me to thinking, it may make sense to build a process that loops in HR. If HR is working with an employee that may be put in a position to have less than scrupulous motivations they could notify the Monitoring Team (yeah, I like to think of a perfect world where this is actually a dedicated team) to put some extra…

I for one would love to know how the Splunk thing has gone. I have just started to get my feet wet with that and it's such a huge beast to try and wrangle, even for a small environment; I can't imagine what it would be like for a large environment.
