Welcome gminks! SAM is an awesome tool and SolarWinds has an awesome community here in Thwack so I am sure you are going to enjoy it. I always tell people that NPM and SAM are the bead and butter of Orion.

Thwack camp was awesome, I am really looking forward to going back and watching some of the sessions that I missed.

Security is a people intensive thing and we can't keep up because InfoSec isn't typically being properly resourced. If companies want to take security serious they need to invest in some good tools and some good staff so that they have time to utilize and respond to do the data that the tools are providing for them.
-
On the InfoSec side of the fence we already face the fact that we are no longer up against people trying to hack our networks and systems, we are up against machines. Unfortunately this becomes a problem when on the defense side you are still using people and their ability to leverage the network and applications as your…

goodzhere you make a good point on the bit about not messing up. If you mess up automation you can end up with a pretty big mess on your hands.

I think this is a super interesting topic and I would agree that it's not a perspective that is considered by most. Many years ago we won an RFP to build a monitoring solution that did exactly this, monitor from client sites across a link to look for availability, packet loss, jitter, etc. The RFP wasn't much more than a…

I think this would be awesome as well as being able to Export to Visio format!
-
I can't wait, I look forward to this even every year, I block the days off on my work calendar months in advance!

One of the other big benefits of SeUM is having immediate insights into the impact of changes and new code releases on your website.

Yes and no; it evolves over time. You can look at our environment and see the different stages of evolution. From a networking perspective (note that I am not on our networking team but do work closely with them) we originally were a Cisco/HP shop, then we evolved to a Fortinet/Arista shop, we had a short stent with…

I agree with sqlrockstar that I totally appreciate how transparent they were with this. We operate several data-centers and cloud services as well so I can totally sympathize with what happened to Amazon. With the complexities of these technologies and environments it also introduces a lot of fragility into the…

Okay, thanks for the clarification. We are in the process of launching PCI based services utilizing LEM and the problems with the report tool are a HUGE problem for us.
-
We actually had our compliance assessors work with us to provide guidance to begin getting the necessary things in place for PCI 3.2 during this years audit. You never want to wait until the last minute on this type of stuff.

A mature enterprise should both have rules regarding using only company approved software and a repository from which said software can be obtained. Following that they should have a way to be aware or even prevent the installation of unapproved software. Without these things you are asking for trouble.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to which automation platform to use, just choose the one that works best for you or your environment. If you aren't sure do some research and bring a few different ones in to "kick the tires". I think you first need to have a successful Operations team before you can worry…

We have virtualized networks as much as is required for things to work on a cloud hosting platform; however, we don't have anything specifically fancy. We have hosts, clusters and the necessary networks to make it work within VMWare all running over dual 10G interfaces on the hosts which is then broken out into their…

I completely agree with your suggestions here.

It's funny how I was reading this while at the same time a bunch of folks from my team were talking about how silly the representation of technology is in movies. I like to think their screens are so different than what we are used to because they are using an OS that we are unfamiliar with, it's called MovieOS.

I just like to roll with the title of "Professional Geek". I guess I personally think of myself as an Enterprise Systems Management expert spanning areas of distributed systems management, monitoring, patching and log management; however, my company has me slotted as a Systems Engineer. It's funny because I think there is…

jswan what do you think the difference was between this solution and the commercial solutions that caused the teams to be more willing to embrace it?
-
ekis most monitoring tools are not real-time due to their nature and how they work, in line with that logic I also would not call the SolarWinds tools real-time. With that being said, their monitoring tools are fantastic and with the Orion products you can have scripted responses to alerts. You can also have your own…

Great pics, really wish I could have been there. Thanks for sharing!

I love that in these sessions you guys use real world examples that us folks on the front line face every day. Your products are constantly evolving to solve these real problems versus other products that evolve toward marketing goals and buzz words. Keep up the great work!
-
Not having this is really making things challenging for me, this seems like both a reasonable and relatively basic request. Any thoughts on getting this into the product sooner rather than later? I am working to replace our current FIM solution with LEM and this would be a huge win for me.
-
We also could really use this functionality, it's pretty common in most ticketing systems.
-
As you might expect, I am happy to vote for this idea!
-
I think these are some great features! Of course I can't wait to see what you guys come up with on the Connector Building side of things since that is a feature request I have made a good deal of noise about needing. I am also really looking forward to seeing some integration with Orion and specifically SAM.

I have to agree with rschroeder in that you totally nailed it on this post! People often don't understand the true cost of additional unnecessary monitoring tools because if they did they would realize the true cost outweighs any benefit you may think you are getting. If you need a bunch of different monitoring tools then…
