Thank you for the link. I assumed the answer I was gravitating towards was correct but your link and clarification gave me the confidence to know I was right.

Thanks for the entertaining series! I thought that I would enjoy working from home and found that I do! I hope I can keep working remotely, at least on occasion, once this is all over.

To address the question in the title, I don't believe security concerns will interrupt open-source containers. The open-source community is very proactive about fixing issues that are discovered, and the ability to view code and compile the executables with a known trustworthy compiler will be very desirable in the defense…

Interesting discussion. Unfortunately my conclusion is that there's nothing that can be done about it. Companies and governments will use data to their advantage without concern for the desires or needs of customers/citizens/subjects until those people demand accountability. And I doubt people will. After the…

I did not find it. The question asked how many pages Google had indexed and the hint told us how many pages Google believed existed at the time. But that number was correct.

Inside I'm only mostly dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.

I'm sure that your average litigation attorney reads a phrase like “a reasonable security feature” and gets excited. It's a ridiculously ambiguous term! How about this: why don't we just make it illegal to hack IoT devices? Don't all criminals obey the law?

You may also want to change 'dirtysouthus' as those of us from the South hold a very high opinion of our region of the United States and a low opinion of those who insult our part of the nation.

My parents bought my first computer, an Apple ][e, just after the next version of the Apple 2 series came out. I can't imagine a more perfect computer for learning about computers in the pre-GUI days! I could swap hardware components, pulling chips off boards to replace them. The BASIC included allowed me to start learning…

I used to work in an Educational Service District, helping local school districts with IT issues. One thing that wasn't mentioned is monitoring and restricting network traffic the students are generating.

Who else rolls their eyes when a Facebook user talks about privacy? Zuckerberg has openly expressed opposition to the idea of privacy and, in accordance with his beliefs, there have been a few incidents where Facebook "accidentally" reset privcy on uers accounts ot make everything open. But Zuckerberg is a prime example of…

Did you ever approach management with a concern about the risk to a very expensive server on the rack, only to be rebuffed because the contractor (whose beverage is collecting condensation which is likely to drip through a vent hole on the box) knows what they're doing? Of am I the only one with management this bad?

Your second word processor was WordPerfect... was the first WordStar? Or Apple Writer? Or am I just old?

Unfortunately security is just like backing up software. Most people and businesses either have a flippant attitude towards backups and security, then when a data loss or security breach occurrs they recognize the need. But, just like vaccinations, once the need for security or backups starts to fade people again lose…

Am I the only one who doubts California politicians were "accidentally" identified as criminals versus accurately identified?

Thank you both!

I don't know which looks better: the information from the conference or the paella.

No two branches of the military speak the same language so I would be surprised if they are using the same technology for networking.

Data centers generate the same amount of carbon emissions as global airlines Since Bitcoin mining was using as much electricity as the entire nation of Ireland two years ago, is anyone surprised?

I've had my eye on the Astra IIIB. It's aluminum instead of plastic and half the price of the Jupiter. But I haven't found any stores in my region or around Los Angeles (which I visit regularly) that have all the models I want to try.

Good writeup. I'm sorry to see it end.

When I'm bored in an airport, sometimes I set my wifi NIC to promiscuous mode and run a packet capture, looking for how many passwords I can find. There are a shocking number of businesses not encrypting email and I really hope government IT staff understands the need for security.

Thank you for the overview. I need to look for more detailed information after reading this.

I don't blame the webcam makers. If you've ever had to support the general public then you know that people don't want to be bothered to configure devices, they just want plug and play. And you can't have plug and play with security. Is there a solution? I don't know. I've known of people to return devices because they…

I wonder if this feature request is misplaced. I don't know there's anything about Catalyst 9K that NPM handles differently from other devices. However, I do not believe that VNQM supports IP SLA monitoring of 9K devices and this is an oversight that should be addressed.

I find myself spending a lot of time debugging Powershell because I put a bunch of Bash into the code. Old habits die hard.

The problem is that I like running the servers.

Florida man... what else is new? Old code is a risk... what else is new? If people knew how often code contained a comment saying something along the lines of "this is a dangerous hack, fix asap" it would terrify them.

The article about Unix time and leap seconds was fascinating, as are proposals to eliminate leap seconds. Regarding the London Underground, TfL is a government organization and we are expected to trust and honor Big Brother with all of our information. GDPR doesn't apply to government agencies that use data to prevent…

Regarding WeWork, can anybody provide a good reason why they are superior to a home office? I doubt it but I have an open mind. Libra: HA HA HA Microsoft may try to hijack Linux, eliminating a competitior, but the Linux community won't allow that to happen.
