I just got to Tuesday's question because I've been on the road. Can anyone explain the difference between the answers "NCM, NetPath" and "NetPath, NCM" to me?

Putting almost everything in the cloud is obviously the future, but I still have concerns about putting my data into someone else's hands. In my personal life, I encrypt everything and only upload zip files to cloud storage to maintain some semblance of control over my data.

Thanks to data mining techniques, online privacy is a thing of the past. I was surprised you didn't mention that Credit One unintentionally provided hackers with 106,000,000 credit applications, but that news broke a couple of hours after this Actuator was posted. The FBI didn't need advanced data analysis techniques to…

As predictive technology improves we will be able to prevent problems before they happen. Then we'll have non-tech management see there aren't as many problems, not recognize how much work is going into heading off problems, and cause more problems.

I'm sure that I am not the only one who rolls their eyes when they hear some slick new marketing term, assuming that the marketing term is nothing but a new name for old tech.

@"jpfromit", when I said "this job," I was referring to working in the IT field.I thought the context of my statement would make it mind-numbingly obvious that I was referring to the type of job most Thwack users have - a job of dealing with the occasional computer or network device failure but far more commonly dealing…

I need to get to Cisco Live one of these years.

These days there's no reason to try building something from scratch unless you are a hobbyist or really want to learn it in great detail. That's what open source is all about - take what someone else has already figured out and build from that foundation.

I'm looking forward to getting to know this new release.

An AI could destroy large amounts of data, but data backups in multiple locations can also save data. I want to know more about my family history, but they were living in Chicago before and during the big fire so genealogical records were lost. If those records had been digitized (obviously impossible more than a century…

Hi @"kpina", I got back to work and did a binge this week. I was trying to make a joke, but it's obvious that not everyone caught my humor.

I once interviewed at a company that required applicants to give a presentation, I chose password security. During the presentation, an executive said that nobody could get him to reveal his password, the idiotically said the password is his son's name and birth year. "Oh," I replied, "how old is your son? I have a…

I'm looking forward to the rest!

I am really enjoying these write-ups. Keep them coming!

Too many investors place their money based on excitement and other emotions instead of a dispassionate evaluation of the business model. So there's no way idiotic business ideas will stop getting funded.

It seems like every week I find a new use for a Raspberry Pi. I think I'm going to end up running so many of them that I should make a cluster and see if I can compete with supercomputers!

Thanks, that was interesting.

Yumdarling, count me as one more needing a reset. Between the hint and the link someone else provided, I am confident my answer was correct but it was marked as wrong.

Interesting, but I was curious to know if there is any significant difference between what an admin with the government needs and what those of us in the private sector need.

If I access a file on a local file server, I get a lock on that file. I wonder what happens if two people in different locations edit the same file at about the same time.
-
I'm a little concerned now. I had around 143,000 or 144,000 points total, 118,000 or 119,000 available, and now it says I have 25 points available. That's a pretty big difference.
-
I am really curious now. Did the data center architect only crunch numbers to come to an estimate of the monthly cost or did he do any real-world experimentation to see what resources would be needed?
-
Two days without answering a question. How empty is my life if I'm thinking about this?

Virtual networking provides the same capabilities as a physical network, but with more flexibility and more efficiency across multiple locations without having to replace hardware or comprising reliability, availability, and security. Devices are connected over software using a vSwitch. I believe this is ambiguous, as…

Soft skills are as important as technological skills. You can't reliably educate a wayward user without these skills and you can't reliably educate a clueless executive on the need for a serious security posture without these skills. Every person who has had to deal with helpdesk duties knows the frustration of users who…

A site that had only one IT person for a long time grew to the point where they needed a second and I was hired. They acquired a new server and I told the guy I was working with that I was going to do a test restore before setting up the server. Nobody here will be surprised, but he was utterly shocked when the restore…

Checklists - From the article it seems the biggest problem is that hospital staff doesn't bother using them. As a private pilot I can state that every single time I have gotten in trouble I got complacent with a checklist. Uber - Is anyone surprised? If you work there, look for another job. Warshipping - What a great idea!…

Less memory utilization and fewer reboots are going to make for a nice future.

I will have to try setting up an IaC lab environment.

With a 281 page long hint, I'm glad we have search functionality! I thought the answer was obvious but, after making that mistake in the past, I need to confirm my suspicion before submitting.
