Ten years ago Iridium 33 crashed into a Russian military satellite and debris will be in orbit for probably at least another four decades. With SpaceX launching thousands of satellites, Amazon launching thousands of satellites, OneWeb launching thousands of satellites, and others wanting to get into the game, space debris…

The nondemoninational cloud reminds me of Java. Java doesn't know or care what OS the Java Virtual Machine is on, and users don't care what cloud their software is running on. All the user or Java code care about is that things work as expected.

I really hope AI marketing improves soon. I, and almost everyone else I know, get bombarded with: "You just bought a toaster, something you're unlikely to replace in the next decade? Here are 20 advertisements for toasters!"

Your db is going to the cloud and if you want to avoid ransomeware attacks then unplug. Whose manager has expected them to do both at the same time?
-
Nice summary. As usual, it sounds like this is a good idea that will only work with significant management effort to get people to really comply.

Zoom appears to have such big problems with security that I'm surprised anyone is using it right now.

Nobody on Thwack has asked how I am. Maybe Wendy will post that as a question: How are you? Happy Fine Okay Dead inside

I haven't watched all the videos I wanted to see from last year's camp. Suddenly I am feeling guilty...

Nice article. I have long believed that the type of person who will open any email attachment because they're curious, or play "games" that instruct users to provide their email addresses and much of the information that many people base passwords on, needs to be trained about security. And if they refuse to take security…

I was going to ask the same question. The "all of the above" option would make perfect sense if the question had radio buttons, but as written the only correct answer is marked as incorrect.

I worked for a government agency in Washington when ILOVEYOU hit. Yes, I received an email from the governor saying he loves me. The state email team blocked access to the Exchange servers until they got a script in place to remove the attachment from any email with that worm. But, before doing so, one supervisor I worked…

WeWork executives not caring about their negligent lack of security? That is incredibly foolish! They opened the door wide open to big lawsuits when someone can show they had a loss because of a data breach.

I can understand being ticketed for flossing while driving, but arrested? What's with that, Canada? And I am not in the least bit disappointed to see Lime downsizing. A lot of the scooter users are way too inconsiderate to pay any attention to who or what they may be blocking when they get off the scooters. I think a great…

Nice summary but I would love much greater detail.

I don't see a lot of people looking at the cloud as a fix for aging technology. Instead, I see a lot of people thinking the cloud is some magic elixir cure-all. It's almost scary that so many decision-makers have no idea what 'the cloud' really means.

Hundreds of millions of Facebook users’ phone numbers found lying around on the internet Zuckerberg has never cared about the privacy of users and has even spoken out against the notion of privacy. Of course he purchased several properties around his home to increase his privacy, but the rest of us don't deserve privacy…

Facial recognition is not hard to trick. I have seen a lot of studies that demonstrate this. And I don't know the proper term for this psychological principle, but when people focus on something it can be very difficult for them to accept they may not be correct and reconsider. Putting this together I can foresee law…

I've been using the same approach for weight loss. I've averaged about 10 pounds per month so far.

So what happens if the Ansible server gets compromised?

They won't make as much money if you don't subscribe so I'm surprised it took this long for Micro$oft to do this.

Under the staff experience section I think we all would agree with the advice to ADD TRAINING FOR YOUR IT STAFF! It blows my mind how often managers expect you to know everything but refuse to support your gaining that knowledge.

I have been wondering if there is a given size above or below which cloud computing is the better financial choice. No answer yet.

I find it silly that people who know the latest buzzwords, but don't have any real idea what they mean, frequently insist on specialty skills that really aren't required for a job. It's downright maddening when you've been working on a project for three months, you're almost finished, then some executive brings in a…

"Performance tuning database systems are a combination of dark arts and science and can require a deep level of experience." This is the biggest truth bomb I've ever seen on Thwack!

I can't wait to see a Volocopter hit the wake turbulence from a departing A350. Tricking someone into transferring nearly a quarter million dollars? It's serious but I find it funny. Any intelligent CEO who learns of this will create policies to prevent future incidents. And giving Ring data to police then controlling what…

Excellent advice. If only more employers and decision makers understood that attending trade shows provided value to the company. I've had employers say that if I want to go it's entirely at my expense and I have to use PTO. Great way to encourage continuing education!

Now I want to try setting up an application monitor to see if I can have one single monitor for my entire RPi cluster.

In my (admittedly limited) experience, VDI is great in the office but not so good on the road. Within the office a persistent VDI desktop for each user made my life a whole lot easier because I wouldn't have to deal with upset users demanding a lot of unnecessary work from me to make their new desktop look like the old…

Frequent password change policies never made sense to me. I'm glad to see NIST recognize this doesn't improve security. At my university, they stored all passwords anybody had ever used on the system they had at the time. You had to have an entirely unique password at each change. This was incredibly idiotic! Regarding…

True, but this will give another weak excuse for doing so.
