  • Hi there, Adding the external IP's as ICMP only nodes is a really easy way to accomplish what you're looking to do, but as you said, it will add to your overall node count. Unfortunately I don't really know SonicWall devices, so I don't know what type of capabilities they have. What types of devices do you have inside of…
  • I don't have any suggestions about the content, but if you want to really win them over -- start by giving out SWAG! My coworkers love the Solarwinds stickers I've brought back from Cisco Live.
  • Hi, I have a number of Nexus 5k's which are sending syslogs to NPM without issue, and I don't recall having to do anything particularly special to enable the functionality. I know that by default the syslogs will want to use the management vrf -- are you expecting to reach your NPM server via the management vrf, or another…

  • It probably depends a lot on the size of environment you monitor. My environment is relatively small, so I monitor every utilized router and switch port, as well as server and access ports. Though if I were reaching my license limit, the access ports, then server ports, would be the first to go.
  •  Well, I don't know if this is expected/known behavior, but it turns out that I had accidently added another node with the Same name/IP. It was a windows server though, and shouldn't have had any effect on NCM I would think. Once I removed the duplicate server, my NCM integrations worked fine.
  • I just finished that article myself, and I feel the same way you do. I've certainly had my groans with NPM and the gang, but 6 years later I'm still using it. That has to count for something! (Either that or it's a testament of my laziness). Did you look at the other options though? I'd never heard of Argent, and after…
  •  No, I think there are some pretty serious limitations for Netflow reports right now. Some of the reports I'm interested in, mostly reports about application bandwidth (not just how many bytes have been transferred), are impossible to generate through the interface. I'm currently investigating pulling that information from…
  • Sounds like you're talking about what happens when you replace old hardware with new hardware, but everything config-wise stays the same. I've found that on Windows servers the Volumes don't come through very well, and I typically have to add a new volume in and delete the old one. And as long as the interfaces stay the…
  • I've never been quite clear on the relationship between Hardware monitoring in NPM, and SAM (APM). I had all of my HP servers monitored using UnDP's prior to the hardware monitoring features, so you could always try that -- its a bit more work, but it worked well for us. And here's a dumb question, but do you have the HP…
  • Hi DW, Just a sidenote here -- you should keep in mind that running show-tech is a CPU intensive process, so running this while your CPU is pegged could potentially compound the issue. I would pare it back a little and set your script to grab a copy of 'show proc' or 'show platform health' instead, but that's up to you. As…
  • Can anyone at SW help?
  • No -- unmanaging a node or interface will not affect your availability reports or other statistics for that object. From the documentation: "When you need to perform maintenance on nodes, such as upgrading firmware, installing new hardware, or updating security, you may want Orion Network Configuration Manager to…
  • This can easily be accomplished by setting the specific node detail view by device type on the administration page. Go to Views > Views by Device Type. On that page you can see the different device types in your network, and can select a corresponding view to assign to each type. I have different node details views for…
  • You should submit a feature request to get this on the radar. IPAM Feature Requests
  • Hi there, I currently monitor 5 sites across the globe with my NPM installation -- 3 in North America, 1 in EMEA, and 1 in Asia, with almost 500 nodes and 1800 interfaces spread throughout. EMEA and Asia represent about 20% of the nodes, and probably about 30% of the interfaces. I've found that Orion performs just fine…
  • Hi, Depending on your device, the following should work: login on-failure log login on-success log This will produce the following syslog messages: Jun 17 21:25:29.478 MDT: %SEC_LOGIN-5-LOGIN_SUCCESS: Login Success [user: testuser] [Source: 10.1.0.23] [localport: 22] at 21:25:29 MDT Mon Jun 17 2013 Jun 17 21:26:03.178 MDT:…
  •  Gary, What IOS version are you running on those switches? I ran into the same problem (as well as a few others) with the IOS that came loaded on the switch. In my case it was 12.2(25)SEF1 and the problems were resolved when I upgraded to 12.2(40)SE2. --Brandon
  • You should be able to rediscover the node from either the Node management page or the node details page. As long as the DNS change has propagated to the DNS server NPM is using, it should update.
  • I just wanted to provide a follow up to this question, and for the issue that prompted the inquiry. As part of the IPAM functionality, your user will login to the box and run 'named-checkconf -z -t "<directory to chroot>" <path to config>'. By default, however, non-root users are not allowed to run chroot. As Support…
  • I found the two interfaces I'm trying to deal with -- the old interface has the InterfaceID '159' and the InterfaceIndex is '16'. The new interface is InterfaceID '334' and InterfaceIndex '24'. What's the best way to do this? Change the new Interface to have the ID and index of the old?
  • I have an alert that accomplishes what you want. I currently poll all of my HP servers for the status of all of the HD's inside the box. When the poller returns the values, it returns ok,ok...,ok according to how many HD's are installed. I have an alert that watches for anything not 'Ok' and sends me an alert. I will admit…
  • Another method is to go to Admin > Details > License Details This page will show you the node/element counts across NPM and all of the installed modules.
  • I just went through this same issue while trying to determine what counters to monitor for our SQL cluster deployment. I found a blog, blogs.sqlxml.org/.../sql-counter-part-5-disk-queue-length.aspx, that references the PhysicalDisk average queue length. If you bring up a perfmon window and monitor both physical disk and…
  • I currently use snmp traps and syslog to monitor the power of my Cisco switches. Using the 'snmp-server enable traps envmon fan shutdown supply temperature status' command, NPM receives a trap and a syslog message anytime there is a power issue. When I receive a trap, I have an alert configured to send off an email to a…
  • The default snmpd.conf likely contains a number of "extra" items meant to add security around SNMP. These items will look something like this: com2sec notConfigUser default public ... group notConfigGroup v1 notConfigUser group notConfigGroup v2c notConfigUser ... view systemview included system ... access notConfigGroup…
  • I've used both -- I was the Splunk admin at my last job, and my new company has been using LEM for a couple of years now. In my opinion, if you are used to using Splunk you will be severely disappointed with LEM. Not that LEM is a terrible product -- I think it offers easy access to functionality right out of the box, and…
  • Not that it helps, but I was able to get these to go away on my Cisco 4900M's by removing unused 10G GBICs from the device. In my case, they were only alarming on 10G interfaces that weren't actually connected, but still had a GBIC installed.
  • It's tough to pick a temp that works across all your devices because each device will be different depending on the model and location within the room. There's another thread out there where they recommend using the TemperatureThreshold OID, instead of the raw temperature information: See here. I've used this method and…
