I didn't realize that!

We have in house monitoring but I don't believe it does true performance monitoring. I believe we are tracking only that the server is up and the web service is running, but I could be wrong since my team doesn't handle that. We definitely do not notify general users about slowness, only certain IT staff may be notified.

The local movie theater franchise offers the ability for me to book movie tickets online and choose which seat I want in the theater. I have an account registered so now they know who I am and what movies I like to watch. Now they are marketing other similar movies to me. Just a little bit of data gathered on individuals…

Are you more concerned about actionable IT metrics and not concerned with the business impact? No, Business impact is really critical. But you are correct in stating that we may not easily and consistently have a way to translate our IT metrics into metrics that executives care about. What are the metrics that matter to…

It is possible to elaborate more on this "containerized solution". Several of us are quite intrigued.

Exactly what I meant!

This is similar to I need this feature too! One of our networks is tightly secured, while other networks are less tight. It would be a real security issue if one device moved from our less tightly controlled networks to our highly secured network. That's what we want UDT to be able to alert us on. Is this not a issue for a…

Of course there are differences, as you pointed out. Other things to consider about external monitoring vs internal would be: * Cost of time and labor to develop your own internal system or purchase and implement solution * Some external solutions include agents to run on your servers so you get the full picture of…

I upvoted this because its pretty much exactly what I was asking for in my idea: http://thwack.solarwinds.com/ideas/3965

This is good. We are looking at turning on PAD on more of our firewalls / IPS modules. We are a little concerned that turning on PAD will significantly eat up CPU horsepower on the devices and generally make traffic passing through seem "slow". Anyone have performance problems running PAD?

Practically every site on the web does this. Google especially watches everywhere you visit, everything you buy, every forum you post on and tries to customize their ads to appeal to you on a deeper and deeper level. This kind of user tracking will not be going away but, just the opposite, it will be growing greater and…

Let's take this to the Moon!!

I am in agreement with your perspective on device tracking, mikegrocket. When it is on my network and / or has company data on it, I have got to know where it is and what is stored on it.
-
You've got a great list of questions there. I've never really thought of SOX or HIPPA compliance with VoIP but I can see some application especially in Voicemail and IM solutions.

#1, #2, and #4 are really great ideas that should be implemented!

Bump! Hey people if you are going to vote for my idea, vote for this one as well, because they are the same! http://thwack.solarwinds.com/ideas/1148

Thanks for this series aluciani ! We don't have any exposure into the mobile arena or any business need for mobile apps, unless it becomes a new initiative in the future.

Wyld Stallyns are going to save the world! You gotta vote for Bill and Ted!

Sweet doggies! I can't believe I won!

I fall on the more cautious side of the line. I would prefer a company not allow any data on to a personal device unless that device stores the data in encrypted form, communicates with the company via only encrypted channels and accessing the company data on the device enforces two-factor authentication, eg. fingerprint…

Should have been Ford.

glenkemp The video clip was a nice touch! I'm looking forward to enjoying more of your writing voice and perspectives on security, but even more so, I am eager to hear more about your 3rd use-case, Application Awareness. I think it will help us prove that slowness is not always the fault of the network.

Same here.

Ah ha! Well, that's good to know. Thanks. There now is an excellent reason to stay current with your maintenance contract!

That is happening to me too. I also just opened a ticket.
