One of our networks is tightly secured, while other networks are less tight. It would be a real security issue if one device moved from our less tightly controlled networks to our highly secured network. That's what we want UDT to be able to alert us on. Is this not a issue for a lot of enterprises?

Let's make this one happen! We need the ability to copy user when making a new user. Please Solarwinds! Listen to us!

Good points Scott McDermott. We use NPM, NCM, Netflow and consolidated logging. Could not live without them!

Good point, jim.couch@loves.com A well crafted document is useless if it's buried somewhere and you can't find it. But depending on the incident and fallout, you may still be held responsible for following the contents of the document.

You highlight exactly what we often miss. "UP" just isn't good enough, we need to make sure "Accessible" and "Performing" are part of the regular network health check. I think we easily become reactionary instead of preventative. Sometimes I look at NPM and think, "All our nodes are up, so I can move on to the next…

So True! We recently had a Network Admin leave the company, and it was a massive undertaking to change passwords everywhere, including all the different places in Solarwinds products.

glenkemp, thanks for your informative series. I have really enjoyed reading it. In the scenario in the Troubleshooting section of this article, I find often the solution chosen for these kind of issues is to throw more bandwidth at the problem instead of doing some deeper analyzing.

We have capital invested in our storage infrastructure, but you are right, choosing a vendor is not a capital decision. My company operates a critical 24/7/365 real-time operation. For storage, and most other IT decisions, the key point is always SUPPORT and reliability. We get that with the big vendors, like NetApp.…

I think threshold or anomalous behavior alerts are where it's at for being proactive. "Disk Full" or "Interface Down" are definitely important alerts, but if there is something going on before it gets to that point, I want to know. Also tracking config changes is critical, I really want to know when someone on my team has…

I've worked with New Relic before. They have great tools especially for tracking web app performance.

This is a HUGE need for our enterprise. PLEASE implement this. We have many separated networks in our enterprise and we NEED a way to alert and track when devices move between networks.

June Mini Mission, accomplished. I'm fist-bumping my residual self-image. Can't wait for July to interact with SW on FriendFace!

Thanks for this article! Your comment: "most use conventional x86 processor designs" has me going back to the manuals and finding out exactly what processor architectures our firewalls are using for inspection.

I very much agree with CourtesyIT Creating an overarching set of policies is SO incredibly vital to maintaining a manageable and efficient network and network team. Then from the policies creating standard procedures to follow. It may take some time and effort to generate all this, but once it is in place, its truly…

Exactly right! This is one of the most important features that could be added for security! Please Solarwinds!

Will this be available if the web interface goes to HTML5?

Since there is a lot of talk currently about World Map, this would be so great to have a multiple column World Map too!

A lot of folks complain about perceived slowness but I am not aware of actual latency tracking of our website.
