I recommend the book, "Learn Windows Powershell In a Month of Lunches" by Jeff Hicks and Don Jones. 1 hour a day for a month or whatever leisure pace you'd like to go at. Powershell is such a powerful tool (Linux/s bash equivalent) and will impress your manager, high ups with the amount of time saved AND limit human errors!

When i tried to explain to my grandparents about what a server was or a database, so i used the library metaphor. Each row of books is a database with all pages of the book (data) stored in that row (database). They looked at me funny and told me you cant copy pages into a computer nor would the library lend you all the…

I agree, ensuring you have enough space on your disk is very important but it shouldn't be a surprise to you if the disk(s) are full. Either email alerts or a third party app should be telling a DBA that disks are in a certain threshold and need disk space added before they fill up and shut down your database(s). Usually,…

halaszj Yeah tempdb is a great place to start with as well. If tempdb is always a pain in the rear for you, i'd ask developers or users to send me their queries and ensure that they are written properly. I always enjoy sending funny pictures of issues IT personnel see on a daily basis, also love watching funny IT videos about issues, troubleshooting, end user experiences and wacky solutions! For example, had to fix a tool and we performed "Microsoft Magic" which means bouncing the server to resolve the issue. I dont know,…

I never knew what I wanted to do with my life but growing up as a kid, I always loved video games and being on the computer. From the Hewlett-Packard 95 as a kid on MS-Paint and playing Rodent's Revenge to getting older and fixing my Xbox 360 and helping my friends with laptop/computer issues, I always enjoyed being around…

As we are all stating we are done, I'd like to follow the bandwagon. Done.

As we only have one database instance, we keep daily backups. We arent monitoring a huge amount of databases at one time, so a quick full restore is more than sufficient since all the data is stored in the database. If you are monitoring a high volume of databases, mprodbus's HA is a great way to go, have a failover…
