What version of 7 are you trying to upgrade from? You must have v 7.8.5 at the very least to install 8.1-

I've never experienced any issues with Cirrus especially with bringing down my network- I would err on the side of caution and mark this a coincidence. Was this a production version or demo?

It looks like you are on the right track.The Toolset install will not affect the Orion Configs. I would get everything up and running and then do the discovery- good luck!

You cannot upgrade from 5.0 to 8.1- The DB Architecture was completely changed for 8.1 and therefore the DB problem. You will need to upgrade up to 7.8.5 first-then to 8.5 & HTH

I was told this will be in a future release. For now you just have to manually un-manage the Node.

When i would run the network performance monitor and select memory or volume information it caused the server to peg at 99.9%. I upgraded to the latest Net-Snmp release to resolve- You might want to upgrade to 5.4.1 net-snmp.sourceforge.net/download.html

Second Pollers are generally for load distribution only and not for any sort of redundancy. What you may want is a Hot Standby Poller, but this normally needs to be with the SQL server I believe.
