  •  I suggest you take a read here People who are unfamiliar with the real meaning behind the 4GB Windows memory limit often point out that certain versions of Windows (such as Enterprise or Datacenter editions) can actually support more than 4GB of physical memory. However, adding more than 4GB of physical memory to a server…
  • You will not use the License Manager to apply license keys. This should be done through the individual product license applications. E.G. Start -> Programs -> SolarWinds Orion -> Server & Application Monitor -> Server & Application Monitor Licensing
  • If you're unsure no harm can come from reapplying the service pack.
  • If possible you may want to consider getting some additional IP addresses and doing a NAT for these hosts. Alternatively you can do a simple site-to-site VPN, or even leverage Hamachi since it's free.
  • The credentials provided should be either a local or domain administrator account.
  • I'm afraid there is no easy way to alter this en masse through the web-UI. You could in theory however craft a SQL query to truncate the volume caption to only the first three characters.
  • You should be able to consolidate many of your alerts with the new Web Based Advanced Alert Manager we're currently working on. If you also own NPM you can try it out yourself by signing up to participate in the NPM v12 beta. * NPM 12.0 Beta1 Now Available * NPM v12 Beta2 Now Available
  • SAMs message variable does not honor carriage returns. You'll need to ensure there are no line breaks or carriage returns in the message returned from the script. SAM interprets all line breaks as the end of the message.
  • SAMs application status is handled a little differently than node status. I don't believe there is any way to include application status icons as part of a report. You could probably accomplish this using a Custom Query Resource following the SWQL examples outlined in the Orion SDK.
  • I would strongly encourage you to use AppInsight for Exchange, which is now officially released in SAM 6.1. Copying a component within an application template cannot be performed within the application template editor. This function can be found under [Settings -> SAM Settings -> Manage Component Monitors within Templates]…
  • Windows Hardware Inventory is a Zip file that must be extracted before it can be imported into SAM. The ZIP contains two files, a template (which can be directly imported into SAM though the webUI, and a Orion Report file which must be copied to the reports directory of your Orion server manually.
  • Components within a given application template are polled serially, so you would need multiple application templates to ensure the job scheduler is spacing out the polling appropriately. There's no guarantee that each monitor will be polled in 5 second increments, but the more of them you have your odds improve.
  • You could use the generic "Java Application Server" templates or the templates designed for specific Java Application Servers. * Java Application Server (JMX) * Java Application Server (SNMP) * JBoss (JMX) * JBoss Application Server v4.x * GlassFish * Oracle WebLogic (JMX) * IBM WebSphere (JMX) * Tomcat Server Template The…
  • The SMTP server settings are defined per alert. Create a new alert, or open an existing one in the System Manager and go to the "Actions" tab. Select "Email/Page Action" and then go to the "SMTP Server" tab.
  • A comprehensive list is not yet available since the release is still under development. Release notes aren't complied until the release date, but they are sometimes available during RC. When/if you sign up to participate in the beta I will include a list of enhancements in the email I send to all beta users.
  • This is resolved in APM 4.x Internal Bug #FB1241
  • Their must first be an active alert for that alert definition. EIther there are no active alerts for this definition because all components are in a good state, or the default out-of-the-box 'Alert me when a component goes down' alert definition has been deleted, disabled, or modified in such a way which rendered it…
  • When you select "Start Monitoring" on a process or number of processes through the Real-Time Process Explorer you will be taken through a wizard which will allow you to add those components to an existing monitored application or the original template it was based upon. If you select the template then any other nodes that…
  • I will have to defer tocobrien to provide a definitive answer to that as Universal Device Pollers are an exclusive feature ofNetwork Performance Monitor.
  • Backup the following keys before making the change. Then you can simply double click on the file to restore the machine back to the way it was prior to the modification. * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost * HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{D16904E8-7F7D-4821-ACF5-FDE160CBE65E}
  • You won't lose features, but you will lose integration and the single pane of glass view between NPM and SAM/WPM.
  • Under "APM Settings" click "Managed Assigned Component Monitors", then select the component monitors you want included in as part of a template and click "Create New Template".
  • I recommend you take a look at our Log & Event Manager. It has been purpose built from the ground up to collect and report on log and event data en masse for auditing, reporting, alerting, and compliance purposes.
  • A) Patching a Orion Failover Engine server pair without management (backdoor) IP addresses Is there any documentation that could describes topology with or without backdoor IP? The only topology differences are the addition of an additional network interface in both servers that have FoE installed. These additional network…

  • Does your Orion server have internet access? Does it require a Proxy?
  • I was referring to the detailed error message that appears on the Application Details view at the time when the component is in an "Unknown" state.
  • Can you launch the Real-Time Process Explorer from the Node Details view of that MySQL server?
  • Is it possible this alert has been copied? I would recommend putting something unique into the subject line or message body that identifies which alert is triggering the action. It may be that the one you are using is configured properly, but there's another one misconfigured. It could also be triggering for a reset…
