Hire an e-waste vendor that environmentally and securely destroys your old hardware. Receive certificates of destruction and inspect the facilities at least once a year to verify the work going on there. RT

We once had an outage due to a bridge collapse. Fire ants love electrically charged components and have caused not only circuit outages and air conditioners but also they killed a branch server. The wooden building was on piers about three feet from the ground. The fire ants built up dirt three feet high to reach a hole in…

While looking at the Panini MIB, I was thinking of using a custom polling cycle since a typical cycle of ninety seconds is to wide. Ninety seconds is an eternity in Sandwich Pressing Time (SPT). In ninety seconds you can watch a sandwich go from slightly warm to charcoal. So a five to ten second polling cycle is in order.…

">theguinn Thank you for the announcement. You truly are a hoopy frood. Every vehicle I own has a towel in it. I even keep a small one with me when riding the bike. I cannot count the number of times they have been used over the years. RT

I have also found those that shock me in other ways. About 1996 I was meeting a friend after work at a pub on the San Antonio Riverwalk for a drink. He was a supervisor of a group of electronic technicians that maintain and install medical telemetry in hospitals. He got his Amateur Radio license at 15, after high school he…

I was finally able to get a respectable flash unit for my Nikon D3200. Now I will not have to use the Red EYE making - shadow burning pop up flash!!! I bought an Nikon SB-700, and a few extras (like a cheap GPS, a wired and wireless remote, stereo microphone, vertical battery grip and a hdmi cable) that I have been waiting…

The team has been listening to infrastructure wishes lately. So in the last few weeks we have removed seven racks from one data center. Removing the racks is just a start. Last night we pulled about 20% of the floor and removed old dead cables and fiber. We even move the grills around to provide air where it is needed most…

Lately my two favorite are Security and Privacy. My way to think about it is: Security is how one controls access to information. Privacy is what someone does with the information after they possess it. RT

Now I guess I have to make a Solarwinds alter/shrine in my cubicle. I should use the box Alterpoint came in as a base. RT

In our case we use temperature OID .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.719.1.15 since it is the parent for the Cisco UCS Panini P220 M4 Blade Press. Of course the unit is a double wide blade taking up two slots. We get one Panini Blade Press (PBP) free with every fourth chassis we buy. Make sure you ask your Cisco reps about the free PBP!…

If you worked on many different Novell 3.x systems every day, you had tips and tricks to update drivers. I used to make my own custom batch files that would backup the current drivers and NLM's and replace them with the patched versions. While working at a local VAR, I remember getting a call to go the local newspaper for…

Ok, here is really old network story. It was 1989 and I was part of a volunteer team building a 9600 baud long distance (60 plus miles) network over Amateur Radio. This was one hop in a network of nine nodes that stretched from Austin to the Harlingen. The equipment was using 445MHz at 15 watts on hacked data radios (made…
