  • quote:Originally posted by ckore I believe the Orion software engine polls devices randomly so even if you have alert suppression enabled on a router, it may poll and alert off downstream devices first. Alert suppression really will not work in Orion properly until they allow you to configure the polling sequence…
  • I wonder if that includes the fast polling packets as well? Also; Is there just one ICMP packet sent for each poll, or does it send 3 in quick succession for each poll? If no one has tried this yet, I can always sniff my network for the correct answer... -=Cheers=- NG
  • Have a look in your .../Solarwinds/Network Performance Monitor V.... directory. There are 2 weeks worth of maintenance logs in there. Mine are around 8Mb each. Open them up, and you will see exactly what it is doing to the DB. It takes about 50 minutes to complete on my server. -=Cheers=- NG
  • I recently upgraded the OS on my Server from Win2k to Win2k3. After re-installing a slightly newer version of MS SQL (2000b?) I now have this same issue with missing data. Previously I did not miss this data during nightly maintenance. I will pose this question to our DBA. -=Cheers=- NG
  • It Depends. - What is the statistics polling frequency of your interfaces? - How long are you keeping detailed statistics before rolling them into hourly stats? - How far back is the report pulling the data? The most detail the built-in reports will display is hourly data. Unless you are using custom SQL queries, you won't…
  • OrionAlertEngine.exe is the one sending the mail on Port 25 -=Cheers=- NG
  • Hi Jon, Why not create separate Cutom Menu Bars for each department & assign them to their user profile? Is there some reason why they must first login to the Global menu bar with all network devices listed before going to their custom tab? I have menu bars customized for different groups/departments with filters on the…
  • Hi Greg, this is a known issue with a simple workaround. What make/model is the device you are trying to monitor? www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp -=Cheers=- NG
  • Do a search in this forum for "telnet". The answer is "out there" - yes & yes. -=Cheers=- NG
  • In order to send & receive Windows Net Messages, you must have both the Messenger & Alerter services running. Also your Orion server must be in the same Windows AD domain as the users. As per Ian's suggestion, try this from the commandline: C:\WINNT>net send administrator test123 The message was successfully sent to…
  • Welcome back Ian - nice to have you back in these forums again! Looks like you convinced your new employer to go with Orion. -=Cheers=- NG
  • No can do....it's all or nothing. Currently the only option is to buy another license & install the customer on their own server. Perhaps if they come out with a Web management GUI this will be possible. -=Cheers=- NG ~seek & ye shall find---> [url="http://www4.solarwinds.net/SolarWindsForum/search.asp"] <---no need to…
  • Not yet... First chance I get, I'll give it a try. Thanks for posting this Ross. -=Cheers=- NG
  • Any old links must be changed to www4.[link]. Basically you must change the polling engine ID number in the DB. You can use the Polling Engine Load balancer add-on to do this, or update the DB directly. -=Cheers=- NG [url="http://www4.solarwinds.net/SolarWindsForum/search.asp"]
  • I was working on the exact same thing just last week. I've found that the alerts are so complex now, that they are totally unmanageable. I've created a report which tells me the configured alerts, the message sent format & to whom, but i'm trying to get a list of objects each alert is configured for. I tried joining the…
  • 7.5 is running fine on my server with Win2k3 SP1. -=Cheers=- NG
  • A good DBA could create the queries for this, OR if you don't mind some manual tinkering, you could create something along those lines with Report Writer, as it has top NN report capabilities. However, you'd have to create the report every time for the time period you are looking for. Then you can view it on the web page.…
  • I received the same e-mail and was wondering the same thing: Hi there, I was recently reviewing your account and noticed that you are an Orion customer. Because of this, I wanted to offer you a special 15% off discount on Orion when you upgrade to the next version. The wording makes me kind of suspicious - almost seems…
  • I am using pop ups successfully (send windows net message). I just put the DNS name of the PC to send the pop up to, and that's it. Make sure you aren't blocking the pop-ups on your PC with antispam software. The spammers use this for sending pop-ups, so you may have blocked it if you are not receiving them from Orion.…
  • It's still broken in 10.7. Any word on when this will be fixed?
  • Add your Orion server to the System Manager polling, then create an alert suppression so that if the Orion server is down, no alerts are sent out. This helps eliminate some of the false up alerts, but the best bet is as cshiver says, disable alerting before rebooting, then watch the events in SysManager after the reboot.…
  • First of all, don't feel pressured to upgrade to a newer version, just because Solarwinds recommended it. As for the upgrade path, as soon as you add additional pollers, you are in for a world of hurt (compared to a single all-in-one server). If you are going to upgrade, then I suggest upgrading the single server to 8.5.1…
  • You should only select 64bit counters if the device actually supports this. If it doesn't, you will see a "polldebug.txt" file in the Solarwinds directory. Here is a sample from mine: 4/15/2004 03:09:Sniff-4519-DSNIFF-LAN1-SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter attempting upgrade to 64 bit counters 4/15/2004…
  • Some vendors rate their 100Mbs switch ports as 200Mbs throughput. Perhaps their MIBS are rated this way as well ? -=Cheers=- NG
  • I did a search for timeout & NOC and came up with these results: www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp -=Cheers=- NG
  • Kiwi does have the option of exporting to html. It must be possible to publish this to a page on the Orion website. The challenge would be to make it real time, but even this would be possible with some custom code/development. (We actually have CiscoWorks 2000, but have not setup any alerting for traps. We have just been…
  • I use Kiwi Syslogger. -=Cheers=- NG
  • Make sure you don't already have another TFTP server running. I'm using the VBS script to download configs once a week. If I try to start the TFTP server manually to grab a config, it won't start because there is another copy still running. Check the Windows task manager for an existing instance of the tftp server running.…
  • Do a search in this forum for "Bandwidth Calculation".... www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp You can set this to anything you like in Orion. -=Cheers=- NG
  • Stephen, Make sure you have DNS configured correctly on the box running EE. The software does a DNS reverse lookup on the IP addresses found in the routers arp table. Firstly, you need to make sure you can do a nslookup on the DNS server. Secondly there must be a DNS server which is authoritative for this IP reverse zone…
