other tools handle this... of course a properly configured DNS is required too.

Unfortunately in some shops monitoring tools are considered evil because they shine a spotlight on a group or teams failure or shortcomings. Granted this is in a highly silo'd and likely small company. It is a huge culture change that must occur.

Cool deal, been waiting for the new mission to kick off!! Good luck everyone!

Agreed with rschroeder !

Ethics in programming, ethics in AI, The three laws of robotics, HAL being forced to lie and therefore causing human deaths. It is all relevant and interrelated. Sci Fi becomes fact. The moral dilemma is there. Skynet can happen although it may not be in our lifetime, but possibly in our grandkids lifetime.

Hmmm, sizing requirements, capacity planning, trending..

Mission away....hang on for a fun ride!

A bump a day helps to get a request onto the product roadmap!

No matter how simplistic or consistent automation is, you must check on it from time to time to make sure it is doing what you expect with the expected results.....

That tells me the younger DBA's haven't written their scripts well enough to handle situations and provide proper logging and feedback in case anomalies are found.

Ah yes...an acronym I have used quite a bit. Well put adatole !!

hint...the actual word is not on the hint's page. You have to take a word that is there and modify it. It is a bit tricky... This is not the first time Solarwinds has been a bit crafty in setting this up. While a little tough at first, it makes you think...which if some of us is tough without the minimum daily requirements…

Worked at a company that wanted 99.999% uptime. Well in the 1st quarter we had 2 vendor outages that killed the 5 nines early on. Then a series of "unfortunate" mistakes further put a nail in that coffin in that it would have been over the limit even if the vendors hadn't killed the SLA. I do not miss that sweat shop.

Crime as a service...it was a matter of time !! The nations infrastructure maps are interesting. One takeaway on the electric grid..is that it was built as we went is apt as the infrastructure went in to support areas of higher population density and then stretched out to support the more rural areas. Here in Texas, we…

I can see the great reward for smaller companies being able to implement and deploy tools and services that they could not otherwise do on their own. In many ways this is a repeat the hosted web services vs. in house web services that went around back in the late 90's/early 2000's. Some of the same issues and challenges…

Inconceivable !! No one here does that

Many of the ATM's I see in rural areas don't have a LAN to connect to but use standalone cell phones and modems. Look for the cell phone antenna on top when using an atm at a convention center, some convenience stores/gas stations, etc. So hackage may not be as easy as some think. On that note, I have seen ATM's with older…

Users continue to out-dumb IT on a consistent basis. Today's users seem to do so at an increasingly alarming rate....
-
Yes the layers help in this...but you need to view some things from different points in your environment to get the full picture. A simple example is a website...from the outside it looks like a single server. Under the covers there is an F5 that load balances the website across 6 servers. You start getting customers…

Every company I have worked for in the last 30+ years had the DBA's as part of IT...so it they are not already, then you are way behind the curve. Everything else is monitoring 101 and applies to the Federal as well as the private sector.

need more votes to go with the bumps.....bump !

that must have been interesting sight.

can't say that oracle in the cloud is a great thing...and I'll leave it at that.

Good Morning Thwacksters ! Monday bump !

@"zennifer" or insufficient coffee in the morning. Friday I was lacking in the caffeine and recovering from bilateral carpel tunnel release surgery that morning so the mornings cocktail provided by the Anesthesiologist was still doing its thing.
