Ahh...microsoft bungled something ? Inconceivable !! That page brought up a link to the Symantec - Blue Coat purchase... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/06/14/symantec_blue_coat_analysis/ Remote anything via RF is pretty much hackable and not private unless in a secure tunnel...but that only extends the time needed to…

I make it a point to make time to read non-technical books. Otherwise I am surrounded by them at the office, the fire department, and my ham radio shack.

don't use it !

Department of Defense, operational landscape and BYOD....to me BYOD is mutually exclusive to those environments. It opens up too many avenues for exploitation. Regarding the whole IoT "thing", there are times and places where it may be appropriate but in some cases it is just way too much data taking up bandwidth that…

It is handled here via group policy, asset auditing, scans of PC's for non-approved software, blocked USB ports, etc.

Mission accomplished for the day....can I go home now ?

In a prior work environment, IPv6 was beginning to rear its head. We had a few bumps with some agents that didn't play well with IPv6 addresses mixed with IPv4 addresses in a hosts file. Other than that I haven't had much exposure to them. It will be interesting where that takes us in the coming years. NV is so far off the…

My take is that with BYOD you may have to acknowledge or agree to company policy which may allow for 24x7 tracking. For company assets (laptop, phone, pda, etc.) it is fair game at all times either on or off network especially if policy states that is the case.

Hmmm....I was working on an etch-a-sketch engineering diagram idea...maybe not

Very good points... Even back in the day, tape read/write operations varied in speed so there was always a difference.

Thanks brollins !

Pretty much sums things up. The biggest point is that these consumer devices are set up for the lowest common denominator to set up and use, essentially plug and play as much as possible. Most consumers don't have the first clue on securing the tech nor do they want to set up anything other than point and click. Anything…

That just begs someone to touch them....

Not that I am aware of...

Not unlike several diseases that were thought to be eradicated and vaccines were subsequently stopped being given only to find later that those same diseases are making a comeback from parts of the world that never had the vaccine given on a mass scale.

some sites are blocked by content type via McAfee where I work.

As rschroeder mentioned....they are good if you want a raise or are looking for a new job or for the paper tigers out there that want more paper on their cubicle wall.

Ahh...rapid growth further compounds the ability for "forcasting/what-if" tools to predict growth as it is seldom linear.

They will think otherwise after they get hacked....or worse. Just think of the financial issues when someone plays with their heating or A/C when they are not home running the bills up or jacking with when they are asleep. Then there is the connected lock that is "unlocked" allowing others to gain entrance and ransack or…

Is it really that innovative and secure or is it just the next hype so that people can make money?

I believe there is a "behind the curtain" cost that is not well documented as a result of the server being "on" thus there are cycles being used to maintain the server being powered on even though it is virtual. Those costs tend to bite people.

schema updates for any database can be a pain...especially if it is part of an upgrade and the vendor provides no way to back out....you are having to rely on your backups and potential loss of data, incompatible/incorrect registry flags, etc. being out of whack. Getting a full backup prior to an upgrade is mandatory !

The VM team is separate and we have little visibility in that realm....maybe in the future.
