Like any other tool, automation must be used appropriately and with care and proper feeding. It requires proper coding that adheres to a standard and input data must be validated as well as proper logging and documentation (both internal and external). Don't use a sledgehammer when all you need is a tack driver...

Excellent topic and comments so far. The one thing I am not seeing is the tie in with Change Management. It can be related to documentation, but needs to bind the Network Team with the Monitoring Team and the Business as a whole (ITIL). This way everyone is aware and a proactive part of the change and overall health of the…

We enable interface monitoring if the ifdesc field follows a specific format (using regex) otherwise we don't alert on any state changes or metric thresholds. Reporting from a data warehouse should be the same as from any other database except that you have a larger table of data to pull from....and it is all the detail…

5 9's...can be obtainable but at a cost...until that backhoe working nearby cuts all your fiber because everything is coming into the building at the same point or everything is tied to the same vendor. It is a SLA that makes the business happy but gives IT headaches and insomnia at night. One good outage (bad ios code,…

most important statement in that link.. Bottom line: do not forget the bacon!

The separate "elevated privilege" account is a good thing. Similarly is the use of sudo in unix environments. It allows root level or other user level access while logging activity for audit purposes. Your 3 points are ones I am a firm believer/practitioner of. While I may have the rights to change certain system…

It takes a little time for them to generate all the stuff and get them added. Personally, I would think they are tired after the outstanding job they did and the amount of work required. Give them a little breathing room. After normal monthly missions it usually takes about a week for things to appear.

some places use a special emitter. The general strobe pattern doesn't work. There are sometime 20+ possible strobe patterns on a lightbar and what is chosen is by department or entity. At one time the emitter could be found on ebay...some people were arrested and charged for it's non authorised use. I do have strobes on my…

sparda963, I am not sure what was involved in getting it approved although it was done and has been in place for a year now.

money talks...and if Apple is not getting the sales they "expected" because they were Apple and could command their price then they may be getting the message. I believe the masses that vote with their wallet are making their own point to Apple. They are well known for obsoleting hardware when they roll out new…

I don't believe there were proper metric gathering in place to determine the usage at any particular break room. Thus the data sets used to make the evaluation were based on the whole building and someones perception. On the other hand...the number of people who would set an empty glass pot on a hot burner and leave it…

Great ! It is amazing how far SD (software defined) anything goes these days. This even extends into the realm of radio. Thank you for sharing !

davparker I wish Solarwinds would implement a data warehouse so that we can do our reporting and long term capacity planning without impacting the production database.

need to check to see if techwiseTV is still around or if some of the episodes are on youtube.

Although in some shops, audit data is highly restricted due to corporate policy. But I agree that it (read access) should be available when needed potentially through more granular permissions to certain accounts if there is a business need for it. [tag:bumpsquad]

Look at the values in the graph and the answers...There is not an absolute value for the answer.

Considering when I was a kid, a computer filled a room until the transistor and integrated circuits were built. Although my parents were divorced, Mom supported my many interests and hobbies, she did encourage me to work on what I did well. So here I am today having worked my way up from the stockroom of a data processing…

From what I have seen in past lifetimes, They don't do an in depth install, put it through it paces sort of thing..... There is usually no mention of scalability pain points or some of the show stopper gotchas that prevent some companies from implementing certain solutions.

Just think how this would go with cross stack data correlation !! Now you can go back in time to see the details and not have to muddle through all the rolled up averaged values.

People take for granted the network until you get into a situation where you have to do a major restore on a system...just hope it is not your production site in a DR instance....

Congrats to michael.lipton and goofykc !! Let us know how things work !!
